A modified activated sludge process (ASP) for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) needs to sustain stable performance for wastewater treatment to avoid eutrophication in the aquatic environment. Unfortunately, the overall efficiency of the EBPR in ASPs and membrane bioreactors (MBRs) is frequently hindered by different operational/system constraints. Moreover, although phosphorus removal data from several wastewater treatment systems are available, a comprehensive mathematical model of the process is still lacking. Purpose To describe the paper-based and electronic formats of resident admission forms used in several aged care facilities in Australia and to compare the extent to which resident admission information was documented in paper-based and the electronic health records. Methods Retrospective auditing and comparison of the documentation quality of paper-based and electronic resident admission forms were conducted. A checklist of admission data was qualitatively derived from different formats of the admission forms collected. This paper presents a secure storage model named Peer to Cloud and Peer (P2CP). P2CP uses the cloud storage system as a backbone storage system. However, when data transmission occurs, the data nodes, cloud user, and the non-cloud user are involved to complete the transaction all together. The users, typically the client peers, can communicate with each other directly, thus bypassing servers on the cloud. Similarly, cloud servers can communicate with each other in a P2P mode. The vehicle routing problem with stochastic demand (VRPSD) is a well known NP-hard problem. The uncharacteristic behaviour associated with the problem enhances the computational efforts required to obtain a feasible and near-optimal solution. This paper proposes an algorithm portfolio methodology based on evolutionary algorithms, which takes into account the stochastic nature of customer demand to solve this computationally complex problem. In this paper a new mathematical function is proposed for describing the S-shape relationship in both normal x and y scale and the semi-logarithmic x and y scale. Basic features of the proposed function have been demonstrated. The proposed function has then been used to simulate the S-shape relationship for seven categories of engineering phenomena. It is seen that the proposed mathematical function has a great potential for representing various S-shape relationships and provides a powerful tool for characterising properties of materials or response of systems; it is thus useful for further numerical analysis.

White-rot fungi (WRF) and their lignin modifying enzymes (LME) can degrade a wide range of trace organic contaminants (TrOC), which are suspected to cause adverse health effects in humans and other biota. Recent studies have successfully applied either whole-cell WRF or their extracellular culture extract to remove TrOC from the aqueous phase. TrOC removal by a WRF system is dependent on a range of factors including molecular structure of the TrOC, fungal species and their specific LME, culture medium composition, and methods to enhance fungal degradation capacity; however, the specific relationships between these factors have not been systematically delineated. The effect of heat treatment at 700-1500 ºC on the mechanical strength, micro strength and pore structure of carbonaceous materials, including coke, char and coals, were studied using tensile test, ultra micro indentation and image analysis. Strength of chars and pyrolysed coals was strongly enhanced by heat treatment at temperature below 1100 °C; strength of cokes was slightly degraded after heat treatment at 1500 °C. Mechanical strength of carbonaceous materials was demonstrated to be significantly affected by micro strength and porosity. Carbothermal reduction of silica was investigated in a fixed bed reactor at 1300-1650 °C in nitrogen at 1-11 atm pressure and in hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures at atmospheric pressure. Samples were prepared from silica-graphite mixtures in the form of pellets. CO evolution in the reduction process was monitored using an infrared sensor; oxygen, nitrogen and carbon contents in reduced samples were determined by LECO analyses. Phases formed in the reduction process were analysed by XRD. Silica was reduced to silicon nitride and silicon carbide; their ratio was dependent on reduction time, temperature and nitrogen pressure. An analytical model is proposed to describe the filtration process applicable to a base soil-filter system. The Navier-Stokes equations for porous media are used to capture the hydrodynamic behavior, whereas, numerically, a new algorithm is proposed to solve the Navier-Stokes equation in a nonlinear form. Free-volume hole-radii of the active skin layer of one seawater and two low pressure reverse osmosis (RO) membranes - namely SWC5, ESPAB, and ESPA2 respectively - were evaluated using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) with a slow positron beam. The results were related to the rejection of boric acid and eight N-nitrosamines to provide insights to the transport of these small solutes through RO membranes. At pH 8 (which is the experimental pH in this study), these solutes are uncharged. The pore structure of carbonaceous materials was studied using image analysis. The effect of annealing on the porosity and pore geometry of cokes, chars, and pyrolyzed coals (laboratory chars) was examined in the temperature range of 973 K to 1773 K (700 C to 1500 C). The porosity of chars and pyrolyzed coals significantly increased during annealing at temperatures below 1373 K (1100 C) due to volatile matter release. This study examined the relationship between molecular properties and the fate of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in the aqueous and solid phases during wastewater treatment by MBR. A set of 29 TrOCs was selected to represent pharmaceuticals, steroid hormones, phytoestrogens, UV-filters and pesticides that occur ubiquitously in municipal wastewater. Both adsorption and biodegradation/transformation were found responsible for the removal of TrOCs by MBR treatment. A connection between biodegradation and molecular structure could be observed while adsorption was the dominant removal mechanism for the hydrophobic (logD > 3.2) compounds. Highly hydrophobic (logD > 3.2) but readily biodegradable compounds did not accumulate in sludge. …

We consider a finite directed graph E, and the gauge action on its Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra, viewed as an action of R. For inverse temperatures larger than a critical value βc, we give an explicit construction of all the KMSβ states. If the graph is strongly connected, then there is a unique KMSβc state, and this state factors through the quotient map onto C*(E). Our approach is direct and relatively elementary.

Two near-β titanium alloys, Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe and a modified one containing 2 wt% Cr (Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–2Cr–1Fe) were produced from Ti hydride precursor powders via the cost-effective blended elemental powder metallurgy technique. The effects of two cooling rates (10 K s−1 and 1 K s−1) during thermo-mechanical processing on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray line profile analysis revealed that dislocation densities and microstrain in β-Ti phase are higher than in α-Ti phase for all cases. Quantitative investigation is made on the elemental segregation in different zones of a heavy microalloyed cast steel by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that C shows serious segregation tendency than that of Mn and Si, and the degree of C segregation in the surface zone is higher than that in the central zone. The aim of this study was to systematically compare the degradation of azo dye acid orange 7 by spongy pellets and attached biofilm of Coriolus versicolour (NBRC 9791) in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) under non-sterile conditions. Mild stirring (35 rpm) resulted in spherical (φ = 0.5 cm), spongy pellets and concomitantly triggered high enzymatic activity of the fungus, allowing for excellent decolouration (>99%) of a synthetic wastewater containing the dye. However, bacterial contamination eventually damaged the fungus pellets, leading to decreased decolouration efficiency. This paper examines the block shear design equation proposed by the first author based on laboratory tests of bolted connection specimens failing in the conventional block shear failure mode. It shows that the explanation regarding the feasible mechanism of block shear failures previously provided by the first author does not necessarily apply to staggered bolted connections, in which the downstream bolts do not have the same edge distance. This paper presents a psychoacoustic-based analysis-by-synthesis approach for compressing navigable speech sources. The approach targets multi-party teleconferencing applications, where selective reproduction of individual speech sources is desired. Based on exploiting sparsity of speech in the perceptual time-frequency domain, multiple speech signals are encoded into one mono mixture signal, which can be further compressed using a standard speech codec. Using side information indicating the active speech source for each time frequency instant enables flexible decoding and reproduction. A two-stage fuzzy image fusion approach, which combines multiple radar images of the same scene, is proposed to produce a more informative image. In this approach, two different image fusion methods are first applied. Then, a fuzzy logic fusion method is applied to the outputs of the first fusion stage. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated on through-the-wall radar images obtained using different polarizations. Experimental results show that the proposed approach enhances image quality by producing outputs with high target intensity values and low clutter. © 2012 IEEE.

Boron rejection by nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in the presence of glycerol, mannitol and sorbitol was investigated as a function of feed solution pH and boron:polyol molar ratio. In the presence of polyols, significant boron rejection improvement was obtained and the extent of the impact was directly related to the stability constant of the boron-polyol complex. Polyols could complex with boron in either the boric acid or borate anion forms; however the complexation between polyol and boric acid appeared to be incomplete. Long-term total phosphorus loads from 17 urban catchments in the USA were predicted using five different measures of central tendency defining site mean concentration (arithmetic mean, geometric mean, median, harmonic mean and flow-weighted mean). Overall, the flow-weighted mean concentration produced the most accurate predictions of long-term loads. The geometric mean produced the second most accurate predictions. Along with the median and harmonic mean, the geometric mean predicted long-term load relatively well at most catchments exhibiting negative correlations between event mean concentration and total event runoff depth.
