Radial Consolidation Model Incorporating The Effects Of Vacuum Preloading And Non-Darcian Flow, Kourosh Kianfar, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A modified 150 mm Rowe cell equipped with pore water pressure measurement was used to capture the flow relationship during vacuum-assisted radial consolidation. Based on the measured data, a radial consolidation model incorporating the effects of vacuum preloading is proposed, based on a non-linear relationship between the flow velocity and hydraulic gradient. The predictions of the proposed consolidation model are then compared with the predictions based on Hansbo’s Darcian and non- Darcian models. The agreement between the proposed model and the measured data is shown, and the advantages of the proposed model compared with the existing models are discussed. An …

Flow Of Molten Slag Through Coke Channels, Hazem Labib George, Brian Joseph Monaghan, Raymond James Longbottom, Sheng Jason Chew, Peter Richard Austin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In the lower zone of the iron making blast furnace, liquid iron and slag descend counter-current to reducing gases through a packed bed of coke. The characteristics of the flow of these liquids and their holdup influence product quality and furnace operation. The present study aimed to establish the criteria for the passage of slag through the narrow pore necks that form between coke particles. The flow of slag through coke pore necks has been simulated using an experimental technique that assesses slag flow from a funnel entering a narrow channel of known diameter. Synthetic coke was mainly used to …

Security Analysis Of A Single Sign-On Mechanism For Distributed Computer Networks, Guilin Wang, Jiangshan Yu, Qi Xie Jan 2013

Security Analysis Of A Single Sign-On Mechanism For Distributed Computer Networks, Guilin Wang, Jiangshan Yu, Qi Xie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Single sign-on (SSO) is a new authentication mechanism that enables a legal user with a single credential to be authenticated by multiple service providers in a distributed computer network. Recently, Chang and Lee proposed a new SSO scheme and claimed its security by providing well-organized security arguments. In this paper, however, we demonstrative that their scheme is actually insecure as it fails to meet credential privacy and soundness of authentication. Specifically, we present two impersonation attacks. The first attack allows a malicious service provider, who has successfully communicated with a legal user twice, to recover the user's credential and then …

Continuous Particle Manipulation And Separation In A Hurdle-Combined Curved Microchannel Using Dc Dielectrophoresis, Ming Li, Shunbo Li, Weihua Li, Weijia Wen, Gursel Alici

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a novel dielectrophoresis (DEP)-based microfluidic device which combines round hurdle with an S-shaped curved microchannel for continuous manipulation and separation of microparticles. Local nonuniform electric fields are generated by means of both constricted gaps and curved sections having equal width. Under the effect of negative DEP, particles transporting throughout the microchannel electrokinetically will be directed away from either inner wall or hurdle edge. Both experiment and numerical simulation were conducted, the results of which showed that the trajectories of fix-sized (i.e. 10 or 15 μm) polystyrene (PS) particles could be controlled by adjusting applied voltage, and continuous …

Study Of Shear-Stiffened Elastomers, Tongfei Tian, Weihua Li, Jie Ding, Gursel Alici, Haiping Du

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Shear thickening fluids, which are usually concentrated colloidal suspensions composed of non-aggregating solid particles suspended in fluids, exhibit a marked increase in viscosity beyond a critical shear rate. This increased viscosity is seen as being both 'field-activated', due to the dependence on shearing rate, as well as reversible. Shear thickening fluids have found good applications as protection materials, such as in liquid body armor, vibration absorber or dampers. This research aims to expand the protection material family by developing a novel solid status shear thickening material, called shear-stiffened elastomers. These new shear-stiffened elastomers were fabricated with the mixture of silicone …

Dielectrophoretic Manipulation And Separation Of Particles In An S-Shaped Microchannel With Hurdles, Ming Li, Shunbo Li, Weihua Li, Weijia Wen, Gursel Alici

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a novel dielectrophoresis (DEP)-based microfluidic device, which incorporates multiple round hurdles within an S-shaped curved microchannel for continuous manipulation and separation of microparticles. Local nonuniform electric fields are induced by means of both constricted gaps formed between hurdles and outer channel wall, and variable current lengths in curved sections with equal width. Under the effect of negative DEP, particles will be directed away from either inner wall or hurdle edge, as they transport throughout the microchannel electrokinetically. Both experiment and numerical simulation were conducted, the results of which showed that fix-sized (i.e. 10 or 15 Pm) polystyrene …

Tele-Operation Of A Robot Arm With Electro Tactile Feedback, Daniel S. Pamungkas, Koren Ward

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Tactile feedback from a remotely controlled robotic arm can facilitate certain tasks by enabling the user to experience tactile or force sensations from the robot's interaction with the environment. However, equipping both the robot and the user with tactile sensing and feedback systems can be complex, expensive, restrictive and application specific. This paper introduces a new tele-operation haptic feedback method involving electro-tactile feedback. This feedback system is inexpensive, easy to setup and versatile in that it can provide the user with a diverse range of tactile sensations and is suitable for a variety of tasks. We demonstrate the potential of …

Investigation Of Trapping Process In “Centrifuge-On-A-Chip”, Jun Zhang, Ming Li, Weihua Li, Gursel Alici

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

“Centrifuge-on-a-chip” is a versatile and multifunctional microfluidic chip which can conduct operations of selective trapping, enrichment, labeling and solution exchange. In this work, the mechanism of selective trapping ability was studied by both the experiments and numerical simulation. We proved the existence of shear gradient lift force in the expansion-contraction cavity and derived an explicit expression of it. Also, a numerical modeling was developed to study the trapping process of micro-particles in a “Centrifuge-on-a-chip”. The effects of flow condition and particle size on the trapping process were investigated. It demonstrates that the derived expression and developed model are suitable for …

Inertial Sensing For Human Motor Control Symmetry In Injury Rehabilitation, Matthew Field, David Stirling, Montserrat Ros, Zengxi Stephen Pan, Fazel Naghdy Jan 2013

Inertial Sensing For Human Motor Control Symmetry In Injury Rehabilitation, Matthew Field, David Stirling, Montserrat Ros, Zengxi Stephen Pan, Fazel Naghdy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper proposes a series of methods for representing changes in human motion during injury rehabilitation using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial sensors. Tracking the changes over a recovery period requires methods for evaluating the similarity of movement in an impaired state against a non-impaired state. We investigate the use of motion analyses such as the centre of mass (COM) tipping distance, the variance of joint velocity eigenvalues and the cumulative state changes of Gaussian mixture models (GMM) for monitoring the symmetry between the left and right sides of body during rehabilitation exercises. The methods are tested on an injured athlete …

An Application Of Nonlinear Feature Extraction – A Case Study For Low Speed Slewing Bearing Condition Monitoring And Prognosis, Wahyu Caesarendra, Prabuono Buyung Kosasih, A K. Tieu, Craig Moodie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents the application of four nonlinear methods of feature extraction in slewing bearing condition monitoring and prognosis: these are largest Lyapunov exponent, fractal dimension, correlation dimension, and approximate entropy methods. Although correlation dimension and approximate entropy methods have been used previously, the largest Lyapunov exponent and fractal dimension methods have not been used in vibration condition monitoring to date. The vibration data of the laboratory slewing bearing test-rig run at 1 rpm was acquired daily from February to August 2007 (138 days). As time progressed, a more accurate observation of the alteration of bearing condition from normal to …

Two-Stage Through-The-Wall Radar Image Formation Using Compressive Sensing, Van Ha Tang, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung Jan 2013

Two-Stage Through-The-Wall Radar Image Formation Using Compressive Sensing, Van Ha Tang, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We introduce a robust image-formation approach for through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI). The proposed approach consists of two stages involving compressive sensing (CS) followed by delay-and-sum (DS) beamforming. In the first stage, CS is used to reconstruct a complete set of measurements from a small subset collected with a reduced number of transceivers and frequencies. DS beamforming is then applied to form the image using the reconstructed measurements. To promote sparsity of the CS solution, an overcomplete Gabor dictionary is employed to sparsely represent the imaged scene. The new approach requires far fewer measurement samples than the conventional DS beamforming and …

Twisted Cyclic Cohomology And Modular Fredholm Modules, Adam Rennie, Andrzej Sitarz, Makoto Yamashita

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Connes and Cuntz showed in [Comm. Math. Phys. 114 (1988), 515-526] that suitable cyclic cocycles can be represented as Chern characters of finitely summable semifinite Fredholm modules. We show an analogous result in twisted cyclic cohomology using Chern characters of modular Fredholm modules. We present examples of modular Fredholm modules arising from Podles sphereś and from SUq (2).

Effect Of Deformation Temperature On Niobium Clustering, Precipitation And Austenite Recrystallisation In A Nb-Ti Microalloyed Steel, Andrii G. Kostryzhev, Abdullah Al Alshahrani, Chen Zhu, Simon P. Ringer, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The effect of deformation temperature on Nb solute clustering, precipitation and the kinetics of austenite recrystallisation were studied in a steel containing 0.081C–0.021Ti–0.064 Nb (wt%). Thermo-mechanical processing was carried out using a Gleeble 3500 simulator. The austenite microstructure was studied using a combination of optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe microscopy, enabling a careful characterisation of grain size, as well as Nb-rich clustering and precipitation processes. A correlation between the austenite recrystallisation kinetics and the chemistry, size and number density of Nb-rich solute atom clusters, and NbTi(C,N) precipitates was established via the austenite deformation temperature. Specifically, we have …

Ground Improvement At The Port Of Brisbane, Australia Using Vertical Drains And Vacuum Assisted Preloading, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, A S. Balasubramaniam

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Soft clays in coastal areas have low shear strength and high compressibility. Thus construction activities for infrastructure developments in these deposits often pose geotechnical problems due to large time dependent settlements and lateral movements. Ground improvement techniques are adopted to reduce the water content of the soft clays by preloading techniques with vertical drains. Depending on the magnitude of the surcharge used substantial immediate settlement with lateral movements can takes place during preloading. This in tum causes stability problems in the loaded areas. The use of vacuum assisted preloading has now become a popular method in Australia where substantial loads …

In Situ One-Step Synthesis Of A 3d Nanostructured Germanium-Graphene Composite And Its Application In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Chao Zhong, Jia-Zhao Wang, Xuan-Wen Gao, David Wexler, Hua-Kun Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A germanium-graphene nanocomposite material with three-dimensional nanostructures has been synthesized by an efficient one-step, in situ, and aqueous-based method. The electrochemical properties of the germanium-graphene nanocomposite have been evaluated by galvanostatic discharge-charge cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results show that the germanium-graphene nanocomposite has a much more stable cycling performance than that of the pure germanium, with a capacity of about 832 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles. The rate capability is also improved significantly. The superior performance is attributed to the graphene content, which increases the material's conductivity, enlarges the specific surface area, delivers enough sites to …

Comparing And Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Tor18fg Leeds Test X-Ray Phantom For T-Rays, Elise Maree Pogson, Joanne Macnamara, Peter Metcalfe, R A. Lewis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The commercially available X-ray fluoroscopy quality assurance phantom, the Leeds test object TOR18FG, was found to be suitable to assess T-ray image quality in the range (0.1-0.4) THz at a depth of 0.5 cm. Previous to this only custom made phantoms, made especially for the T-ray region, assessed T-ray spatial resolution. However, if sub-wavelength techniques are used, the Leeds test phantom may be implemented to measure the T-ray systems spatial resolution, allowing us to directly compare X-ray and T-ray spatial resolution. The systems compared include a Gulmay Orthovoltage machine (X-ray), the On Board Imager (OBI) of a Varian linear accelerator …

On Security Of A Certificateless Signcryption Scheme, Songqin Miao, Futai Zhang, Sujuan Li, Yi Mu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It would be interesting if a signcryption scheme in the standard model could be made certificateless. One of the interesting attempts is due to Liu et al. [Z. Liu, Y. Hu, X. Zhang, H. Ma, Certificateless signcryption scheme in the standard model, Information Sciences 180 (3) (2010) 452-464]. In this paper, we provide a cryptanalysis on this scheme by depicting two kinds of subtle public key replacement attacks against it. Our analysis reveals that it does not meet the basic requirements of confidentiality and non-repudiation.

Choosing An Optimal Model For Failure Data Analysis By Graphical Approach, Tieling Zhang, Richard Dwight Jan 2013

Choosing An Optimal Model For Failure Data Analysis By Graphical Approach, Tieling Zhang, Richard Dwight

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Many models involving combination of multiple Weibull distributions, modification of Weibull distribution or extension of its modified ones, etc. have been developed to model a given set of failure data. The application of these models to modeling a given data set can be based on plotting the data on Weibull probability paper (WPP). Of them, two or more models are appropriate to model one typical shape of the fitting plot, whereas a specific model may be fit for analyzing different shapes of the plots. Hence, a problem arises, that is how to choose an optimal model for a given data …

Compaction Of Coal Wash As Reclamation Fill, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Gabriele Chiaro

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, detailed laboratory investigations were conducted on coal wash produced at coal mine, Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Geotechnical tests were conducted to determine the particle size distribution, compaction characteristics, shear resistance and collapse potential. The compaction tests were conducted under dry and submerged condition to examine the compactability and the strength of the coal wash. The laboratory tests show that compacted coal wash has good potential as effective fill for embankments, and land reclamation. Although coal wash is compacted under submerged condition, increased level of compaction has minimal effect.

Comparative Analysis Of Dynamic Line Rating Models And Feasibility To Minimise Energy Losses In Wind Rich Power Networks, Mathew Simms, Lasantha Meegahapola Jan 2013

Comparative Analysis Of Dynamic Line Rating Models And Feasibility To Minimise Energy Losses In Wind Rich Power Networks, Mathew Simms, Lasantha Meegahapola

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Wind power generation has indicated an exponential increase during last two decades and existing transmission network infrastructure is increasingly becoming inadequate to transmit remotely generated wind power to load centres in the network. The dynamic line rating (DLR) is one of the viable solutions to improve the transmission line ampacity during high wind penetration without investing on an additional transmission network. The main objective of this study is to identify the basic differences between two main line rating standards, since transmission network service providers (TNSPs) heavily depend on these two standards when developing their line rating models. Therefore, a parameter …

An Investigation On The Impacts Of Density Currents On The Sedimentation In Dam Reservoirs Using Tcm Model; Case Study: Maroon Dam, Farhad Fakheri Raof, Mohammad Hossein Naghshine, Ali Khoshrftar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Sedimentation in dams' reservoirs is one of the most pressing concerns facing dams today. Maroon reservoir dam, located in Khuzestan Province, is one of the most important dams in this region. Since it is a new constructed dam, numerical simulation of sedimentation trend in its reservoirs could significantly help on a better utilization. To this end, TCM model which is capable to simulate density currents was used. The obtained results show that the dam loses about 91 million m3 of its reservoirs during a 50-year exploitation period.

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lithium ion batteries are attractive power sources for the consumer electronics market and are being aggressively developed for road transportation. Nevertheless, issues with safety and reliability need to be solved prior to the large-scale uptake of these batteries. There have recently been significant development and assessment of materials with resistance to mechanical abuse, with the aims of reinforcing the battery and preventing puncturing during a crash. Most of the work on battery mechanical safety has concentrated on the external packaging of batteries, with little attention being paid to the enclosed electrolyte. We report on smart multifunctional fluids that act as …

Adaptive Precision Floating Point Lll, Thomas Plantard, Willy Susilo, Zhenfei Zhang Jan 2013

Adaptive Precision Floating Point Lll, Thomas Plantard, Willy Susilo, Zhenfei Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The LLL algorithm is one of the most studied lattice basis reduction algorithms in the literature. Among all of its variants, the floating point version, also known as L2, is the most popular one, due to its efficiency and its practicality. In its classic setting, the floating point precision is a fixed value, determined by the dimension of the input basis at the initiation of the algorithm. We observe that a fixed precision overkills the problem, since one does not require a huge precision to handle the process at the beginning of the reduction. In this paper, we propose an …
