Wavelet Diagnosis Of Ecg Signals With Kaiser Based Noise Diminution, Sridhathan Chandramouleeswaran, Ahmed M. Haidar, Fahmi Samsuri

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The evaluation of distortion diagnosis using Wavelet function for Electrocardiogram (ECG), Electroen- cephalogram (EEG) and Phonocardiography (PCG) is not novel. However, some of the technological and economic issues remain challenging. The work in this paper is focusing on the reduction of the noise inter- ferences and analyzes different kinds of ECG signals. Furthermore, a physiological monitoring system with a programming model for the filtration of ECG is presented. Kaiser based Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter is used for noise reduction and identifica- tion of R peaks based on Peak Detection Algorithm (PDA). Two approaches are implemented for detect- ing the …

Control Of Five-Level Flying Capacitor Based Active-Neutral-Point-Clamped Converter For Grid Connected Wind Energy Applications, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Kashem Muttaqi, D Suntanto Jan 2012

Control Of Five-Level Flying Capacitor Based Active-Neutral-Point-Clamped Converter For Grid Connected Wind Energy Applications, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Kashem Muttaqi, D Suntanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Integration of wind energy sources into the distribution grid affects the voltage profile that could be stabilized through the grid reinforcement or limiting the active power injection. This paper presents a control strategy to regulate the voltage at point of common coupling (PCC) through reactive power exchange to the grid. The reactive power capability of the grid-connected hybrid multilevel converter is based on the voltage sensitivity of the distribution grid at PCC. A hybrid five-level multilevel converter referred as flying capacitor (FC) based active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter is considered. It is an arrangement of a three-level ANPC converter and a two-level …

Correlating Uncompensated Antiferromagnetic Moments And Exchange Coupling Interactions In Interface Ion-Beam Bombarded Co90fe 10/Cofe-Oxide Bilayers, Chin Shueh, Pei-Shi Chen, David Cortie, Frank Klose, Wen-Chen Chen, T H. Wu, Johan Van Lierop, Ko-Wei Lin Jan 2012

Correlating Uncompensated Antiferromagnetic Moments And Exchange Coupling Interactions In Interface Ion-Beam Bombarded Co90fe 10/Cofe-Oxide Bilayers, Chin Shueh, Pei-Shi Chen, David Cortie, Frank Klose, Wen-Chen Chen, T H. Wu, Johan Van Lierop, Ko-Wei Lin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The coercivity and exchange bias field of ferro-/antiferromagnetic Co 90Fe10/CoFe-oxide bilayers were studied as function of the surface morphology of the bottom CoFe-oxide layer. The CoFe-oxide surface structure was varied systematically by low energy (0-70 V) Argon ion-beam bombardment before subsequent deposition of the Co90Fe10 layer. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that the bilayer consisted of hcp Co90Fe10 and rock-salt CoFe-oxide. At low temperatures, enhanced coercivities and exchange bias fields with increasing ion-beam bombardment energy were observed, which are attributed to defects and uncompensated moments created near the CoFe-oxide surface in increasing amounts with larger ion-beam bombardment energies. Magnetometry results …

Dynamic Change Impact Analysis For Maintaining And Evolving Agent Systems, Hoa Khanh Dam, Aditya Ghose Jan 2012

Dynamic Change Impact Analysis For Maintaining And Evolving Agent Systems, Hoa Khanh Dam, Aditya Ghose

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In contrast to an increasing number of agent-based applica- tions in various domains, there has been very little work on maintenance and evolution of agent systems. This paper ad- dresses this gap with a focus on change impact analysis, i.e. estimating the potential eects of changes before they are made as an agent system evolves. We propose a technique for performing impact analysis in an agent system using dy- namic information about agent behaviour. Our approach builds a representation of an agent's behaviour by analyzing its execution traces which consist of goals and plans, and uses this representation to estimate …

Thermal, Microstructural And Mechanical Coupling Analysis Model For Flatness Change Prediction During Run-Out Table Cooling In Hot Strip Rolling, Xiao-Dong Wang, Fei Li, Zheng-Yi Jiang Jan 2012

Thermal, Microstructural And Mechanical Coupling Analysis Model For Flatness Change Prediction During Run-Out Table Cooling In Hot Strip Rolling, Xiao-Dong Wang, Fei Li, Zheng-Yi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Non-uniformity of temperature distribution across strip width direction is the ultimate reason why the flatness defect occurs on the strip after cooling process although the strip is flat at the exit of finishing mill. One thermal, microstructural and mechanical coupling analysis model for predicting flatness change of steel strip during the run-out table cooling process was established using ABAQUS finite element software. K Esaka phase transformation kinetics model was employed to calculate the phase transformation, and coupled with temperature calculation using the user subroutine program HETVAL. Elasto-plasticity constitutive equations of steel material, in which conventional elastic and plastic strains, thermal …

Estimation In Autoregressive Population Models, Thomas Suesse Jan 2012

Estimation In Autoregressive Population Models, Thomas Suesse

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Autoregressive (AR) models for spatial and social interaction have been proposed by many authors. A sample of units is obtained and the model is applied to this sample. Estimation methods such as the maximum likelihood method (ML) have been employed and investigated in the literature. The main assumption is that a response depends on other responses, when these units interact. Some of those units will be in the sample and some in the non-sample. Therefore the model should apply to the whole population rather to the sample only. Under such a population model, the marginal model for the responses of …

A Novel Destination-Based Routing Protocol (Dbrp) In Dtns, Saeid Iranmanesh, Raad Raad, Kwan-Wu Chin Jan 2012

A Novel Destination-Based Routing Protocol (Dbrp) In Dtns, Saeid Iranmanesh, Raad Raad, Kwan-Wu Chin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs), the aim of any forwarding/routing protocols is to achieve a high delivery ratio of packets/bundles at the lowest possible bandwidth cost, buffer space and energy. Therefore, finding a protocol which uses less resource to achieve high delivery ratio and low latency is an open research question. This paper proposes a quota-based protocol which confines the number of replicas and forwards them based on the meeting history of nodes. The unique aspect of our protocol is to weight any encounter with the final destination to be much higher than any other node encounter. This aspect of …

Application Of Multi-Agent System For Preventing Power Interruption In A Large Power System, S R. Islam, Darmawan Sutanto, K M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents an emergency control approach for preventing wide spread power interruption using multi-agent system. The proposed control algorithm is based on decentralized architecture of intelligent agents to achieve fast and accurate response when a catastrophic disturbance is identified in the system. By dividing the network into several areas, the voltage instability problem can be localized and countermeasures can be directed to the most affected area by the authorized local agent. This facilitates quick decision making within the system. The effectiveness of the proposed technique has been proved by a simulation of IEEE 57 bus test power system.

Robust Distributed Privacy-Preserving Secure Aggregation In Vehicular Communication, Bo Qin, Qianhong Wu, Josep Domingo-Ferrer, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), formed by computers embedded in vehicles and the traffic infrastructure, are expected to develop in the near future to improve traffic safety and efficiency. To this end, VANETs should be designed to be resistant against various abuses and attacks. In this paper, we first review the existing proposals to provide security, privacy, and data aggregation in vehicle-to-vehicle communication. We then address the fundamental issue of achieving these conflicting properties in a unified solution, having observed that separate efforts cannot fulfill the VANET design objectives. A set of new mechanisms are suggested for efficiently managing identities …

Self-Mixing Interferometry Used For Instrumentations And Measurements(Invited), Silvano Donati, Zhao Wang, Yanguang Yu Jan 2012

Self-Mixing Interferometry Used For Instrumentations And Measurements(Invited), Silvano Donati, Zhao Wang, Yanguang Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper reviews the development of a new configuration of interferometry, Self-mixing Interferometry(SMI). SMI is attractive because it doesn't require any optical part external to the laser and can be employed in a variety of measurements, ranging from the traditional measurements related to optical path length like displacements, small-amplitude vibrations, velocity; to sensing of weak optical echoes, like return loss and isolation factor measurements; and also to a special feature for the interaction with the medium, measurements of physical parameters, like laser line width, coherence length, and the alfa factor. Because it is also a coherent detection scheme, the SMI …

Wavelet Transform Based De-Noising Method For Self Mixing Interferometry Signals, Yuan Sun, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi Jan 2012

Wavelet Transform Based De-Noising Method For Self Mixing Interferometry Signals, Yuan Sun, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signals are observed from a laser diode (LD) with optical feedbacks induced by an external target. SMI signals carry information related to both of the target and parameters of the LDs. However, the noise contained in SMI signals greatly degrades the applications of the SMI systems. This paper proposes a wavelet transform based de-noising method which can effectively eliminate noise while keeping an SMI waveform less changed. The proposed method is verified by both simulations and experiments

Hybrid Frp-Concrete-Steel Double-Skin Tubular Columns: Cyclic Axial Compression Tests, Tao Yu, Yu-Bo Cao, Bing Zhang, J G. Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular columns (hybrid DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns recently developed at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. A hybrid DSTC consists of an inner steel tube, an outer FRP tube and a concrete infill between the two tubes. Hybrid DSTCs possess many important advantages over existing column forms, including their excellent corrosion resistance and excellent seismic resistance. While a large amount of research has been conducted on the monotonic behavior of this novel form of columns, only a limited amount of work has been conducted on their behavior under cyclic loading. This paper presents the …

Analysis Of Temperature Field In Liquid-Solid Bimetal Casting Of Laminated Metal Composite, Xingjian Gao, Dongbin Wei, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In order to improve the low toughness and poor crack resistance of high chromium cast iron (HCCI), the laminated metal composite (LMC) consisting of HCCI and carbon steel has received increasingly attentions in modern industries. Considering that the controllable temperature field at interface of LMC is a key issue in liquid-solid bimetal casting process, a three layered finite element method (FEM) model has been proposed. The influence of parameters including pouring temperature - Tpour, preheating temperature - Tpre and effective volume ratio - VRe on temperature field are discussed. Simulation results show that the temperature at the interface between two …

Behaviour Of Hybrid Double-Skin Tubular Columns Subjected To Combined Axial Compression And Cyclic Lateral Loading, Bing Zhang, J G. Teng, Tao Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular columns (hybrid DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns developed at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. They consist of an outer tube made of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) and an inner tube made of steel, with the space between filled with concrete. In these hybrid DSTCs, the three constituent materials are optimally combined to achieve several advantages not available with existing forms of columns, including their superior corrosion and seismic performance. This paper presents the test results of a series of large-scale hybrid DSTCs subjected to combined axial and cyclic lateral loads, with an emphasis …

A Low Cost Soft Mapper For Turbo Equalization With High Order Modulation, Licai Fang, Qinghua Guo, Defeng (David) Huang, Sven Nordholm Jan 2012

A Low Cost Soft Mapper For Turbo Equalization With High Order Modulation, Licai Fang, Qinghua Guo, Defeng (David) Huang, Sven Nordholm

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In an MMSE based turbo equalization system, a soft mapper calculates the symbol mean and variance based on extrinsic Log-Likelihood-Ratios (LLRs) information coming from a Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) decoder. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of this module, and in particular, we employ a 3-segment linear approximation approach to calculate the mean and variance of data symbols from LLRs. For FPGA and VLSI implementation, we propose novel piecewise linear functions which map LLR to the mean and variance directly without the use of any two-variable-input multipliers. Simulation results for 16-QAM and 64-QAM show that the no multiplier approach has …

A Sociomaterial Approach To Co-Creating Rfid Value In A Multi-Firm Supply Chain Knowledge Sharing Einvironment: A Longitudinal Case Study, Akemi T. Chatfield, Samuel F. Wamba Jan 2012

A Sociomaterial Approach To Co-Creating Rfid Value In A Multi-Firm Supply Chain Knowledge Sharing Einvironment: A Longitudinal Case Study, Akemi T. Chatfield, Samuel F. Wamba

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Orlikowski and Lacono (2001, p. 132) aptly argue that IT artifacts, particularly distributed network technology applications, including RFID, "do not provide the same material and cultural properties in each local time or context of use." A sociomaterial theory suggests the importance of adopting an integrative approach to study the social and material effects when examining IT benefits realization. While much has been written about the high potential of RFID as a new class of strategic enterprise information systems, the early adopters of RFID and researchers still have to answer the question on how to co-create the business value of RFID …

In Silico Nanodosimetry: New Insights Into Nontargeted Biological Responses To Radiation, Zdenka Kuncic, Hilary L. Byrne, Aimee L. Mcnamara, Susanna Guatelli, Westa Domanova, Sebastian Incerti Jan 2012

In Silico Nanodosimetry: New Insights Into Nontargeted Biological Responses To Radiation, Zdenka Kuncic, Hilary L. Byrne, Aimee L. Mcnamara, Susanna Guatelli, Westa Domanova, Sebastian Incerti

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The long-held view that radiation-induced biological damage must be initiated in the cell nucleus, either on or near DNA itself, is being confronted by mounting evidence to suggest otherwise. While the efficacy of cell death may be determined by radiation damage to nuclear DNA, a plethora of less deterministic biological responses has been observed when DNA is not targeted. These so-called nontargeted responses cannot be understood in the framework of DNA-centric radiobiological models; what is needed are new physically motivated models that address the damage-sensing signalling pathways triggered by the production of reactive free radicals. To this end, we have …

A Multi-Agent Solution To Distribution System Management By Considering Distributed Generators, Fenghui Ren, Minjie Zhang, Darmawan Sutanto Jan 2012

A Multi-Agent Solution To Distribution System Management By Considering Distributed Generators, Fenghui Ren, Minjie Zhang, Darmawan Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A traditional distribution network carries electricity from a central power resource to consumers, and the power dispatch is controlled centrally. Distributed generators (DGs) emerge as an alternative power resource to distribution networks at a smaller and distributed scale, which will bring benefits such as reduced voltage drop and loss. However, because most of high penetration DGs are not utility owned and characterized by high degree of uncertainty such as solar and wind, the distribution network may perform differently from the conventionally expected behaviors. How to dynamically and efficiently manage the power dispatch in a distribution network to balance the supply …

Hybrid Power Saving Technique For Wireless Sensor Networks, Asama Alshaibi, Peter Vial, Montserrat Ros Jan 2012

Hybrid Power Saving Technique For Wireless Sensor Networks, Asama Alshaibi, Peter Vial, Montserrat Ros

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In wireless communication, idle listening, receiving and transmitting are the main source of consumption of energy. This paper gives an overview of several techniques used for wireless networks. We incorporated PSM and PC to gain the advantage of PSM (reduce idle listening) and PC (reduce receiving and transmitting power) and implemented them in the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. The results show that the new hybrid technique saves more power than PSM and PC individually. © 2012 IEEE.

Riemannian Manifolds In Noncommutative Geometry, Steven Lord, Adam Rennie, Joseph C. Varilly Jan 2012

Riemannian Manifolds In Noncommutative Geometry, Steven Lord, Adam Rennie, Joseph C. Varilly

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spinc manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spinc structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.

Order-4 Quasi-Orthogonal Cooperative Communication In Stfc Mb-Ofdm Uwb, Zixuan Lin, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Recently, cooperative communication and Space-Time-Frequency-Codes (STFCs) have been introduced into the Multiband OFDM Ultra-Wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) to improve the reliability, data rate and system capacity. This paper proposes a cooperative communication scheme for a four source node MB-OFDM UWB system using Quasi-Orthogonal STFCs, which is referred to as order-4 Quasi-Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (4-QOCCS). Simulation results show that the proposed 4-QOCCS provides significantly better error performance over the conventional MB-OFDM UWB and our order-2 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (2-OCCS) using the Alamouti STFCs, and even better than the order-4 Orthogonal Cooperative Communication Scheme (4-OCCS), which we have been recently proposed, …

Parallel Computing Method For Intermodal Shipping Network Design, Zhiyuan Liu, Shuaian Wang, Qiang Meng Jan 2012

Parallel Computing Method For Intermodal Shipping Network Design, Zhiyuan Liu, Shuaian Wang, Qiang Meng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study aims to improve the efficiency of design technique for intermodal shipping network design, by virtue of parallel computing system. The existing methods for maritime liner shipping network design are mainly dealing with port-to-port demand. However, a big portion of the customers of a liner shipping company locate in the inland part. Thus, a holistic analysis is necessary to deal with the inland OD pairs, where the transport mode-change from inland transportation to maritime shipping is involved. This paper first reviews a solution method for the conversion of inland OD demand to port-to-port demand. Due to the size of …

Terahertz Photon Mixing Effect In Graphene And Topological Insulator, Yee Sin Ang, Qinjun Chen, Xiaolin Wang, R A. Lewis, Chao Zhang Jan 2012

Terahertz Photon Mixing Effect In Graphene And Topological Insulator, Yee Sin Ang, Qinjun Chen, Xiaolin Wang, R A. Lewis, Chao Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We theoretically investigate the nonlinear terahertz photon-mixing effect in graphene and topological insulator. We show that the nonlinear intraband optical absorption in both materials dominate over the linear response under a very moderate external electric field strength. The nonlinear response is thermally enhanced and the optical nonlinearity is well-preserved even in high temperature regime.

Pedestrian Lane Detection For The Visually Impaired, Manh Cuong Le, Son Lam Phung, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum Jan 2012

Pedestrian Lane Detection For The Visually Impaired, Manh Cuong Le, Son Lam Phung, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Traveling safely in outdoor environments is one of the most challenging activities for vision-disabled people. To improve the mobility of these people, an assistive navigation system is necessary. This paper is a step towards developing this system. We propose a robust method to detect the pedestrian marked lane at traffic junctions. The proposed method involves three stages: patches of interest (POI) extraction, lane marker detection and lane detection. The POI extraction is first performed to detect image patches located on the lane marker boundaries using template matching. Potential lane markers are then formed by using shape and intensity information. Finally, …

Using Context-Aware Sub Sorting Of Received Signal Strength Fingerprints For Indoor Localisation, Montserrat Ros, Brendan Schoots, Matthew D'Souza Jan 2012

Using Context-Aware Sub Sorting Of Received Signal Strength Fingerprints For Indoor Localisation, Montserrat Ros, Brendan Schoots, Matthew D'Souza

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Mobile indoor localisation has numerous uses for logistics, health, sport and social networking applications. Current wireless localisation systems experience reliability difficulties while operating within indoor environments due to interference caused by the presence of metallic infrastructure. Current position localisation use wireless channel propagation characteristics, such as RF receive signal strength to localise a user's position, which is subject to interference. To overcome this, we developed a Fingerprint Context Aware Partitioning tracking model for tracking people within a building. The Fingerprint Context Aware Partitioning tracking model used received RF signal strength fingerprinting, combined with localised context aware information about the user's …

Determining The Vertical Profile Of Reflectivity Using Radar Observations At Long Range, Kate Snow, Alan Seed, George Takacs Jan 2012

Determining The Vertical Profile Of Reflectivity Using Radar Observations At Long Range, Kate Snow, Alan Seed, George Takacs

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The Vertical Profile of Reflectivity (VPR) plays an important role when estimating the rain rate at the surface and has been the subject of radar meteorology research for many years. The VPR can either be sampled directly from observations that are close to the radar where the impact of the convolution with the beam pattern can be ignored, or the parameters for a theoretical form for the VPR are estimated using the available observations or climatology. In either case, a significant difficulty arises when a rain band approaches the radar and quantitative precipitation estimates are required before any detailed observations …

Utilising Non-Composite Steel-Concrete-Steel Panels For Protective Structures, A M. Remennikov, S Y. Kong, Brian Uy Jan 2012

Utilising Non-Composite Steel-Concrete-Steel Panels For Protective Structures, A M. Remennikov, S Y. Kong, Brian Uy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A high-performance protective structure utilising non-composite steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich panels for protecting buildings and facilities against close-range detonation of VBIEDs and heavy ve-hicle impacts has been developed. Unlike other existing composite sandwich panels, no shear connec-tors between the steel faceplates are utilised to construct protective panels in order to simplify the con-struction process. The concrete core of the panel is included to provide the mass for increased inertia effects, and the steel faceplates are designed to develop tensile membrane resistance at large displace-ment to dissipate impulsive energy. The energy dissipation capability and high ductility of the axially-restrained non-composite SCS panels …

Experimental Investigation Of Cable Catcher Systems For Office Building Blast Protection, Alexander Remennikov, L S. Brodie Jan 2012

Experimental Investigation Of Cable Catcher Systems For Office Building Blast Protection, Alexander Remennikov, L S. Brodie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

High performance cable catcher systems are an effective means of protecting office building windows and façades from effects of explosive blast. This paper presents experimental results for the response a simple cable catcher system subject to impact loads delivered using a drop-hammer testing facility. The objectives of this experimental programme were to investigate the loaddeformation behaviour of steel strand cables and to evaluate the dynamic performance of cable catcher systems in reference to their ability to absorb blast energy. Two steel cable arrangements (compacted and normal spiral strand) have been tensile tested in order to provide load-deformation curves as well …

Chen's Conjecture And E-Superbiharmonic Submanifolds Of Riemannian Manifolds, Glen Wheeler

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

B.-Y. Chen famously conjectured that every submanifold of Eu- clidean space with harmonic mean curvature vector is minimal. In this note we prove a much more general statement for a large class of submanifolds sat- isfying a growth condition at innity. We discuss in particular two popular competing natural interpretations of the conjecture when the Euclidean back- ground space is replaced by an arbitrary Riemannian manifold. Introducing the notion of "-superbiharmonic submanifolds, which contains each of the pre- vious notions as special cases, we prove that "-superbiharmonic submanifolds of a complete Riemannian manifold which satisfy a growth condition at innity …
