A Global Reduced Reference Image Quality Metric (IQM) based on feature fusion using neural networks is proposed. The main idea is the introduction of a Reduced Reference degradation-dependent IQM (RRIQM/D) across a set of common distortions. The first stage consists of extracting a set of features from the wavelet-based edge map. Such features are then used to identify the type of degradation using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). The second stage consists of fusing the extracted features into a single measure using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The result is a degradation- dependent IQM measure called the RRIQM/D. This paper concentrates on the form of the hardness gradient in the heat affected zones (HAZs) produced by submerged arc welding of two low-carbon Q & T steels. The results show unequivocally that the gradient differs from that found in steels of lower carbon equivalent in that the peak HAZ hardness is displaced from the grain coarsened heat affected zone (GCHAZ) into the grain refined heat affected zone (GRHAZ). Weld thermal cycle simulation has been used to confirm the results obtained from actual welds and to clarify the cause of this unexpected phenomenon.

Our studies involve in the derivation of projection operators, analysis of the sampling characteristics of pinhole SPECT imaging in Radon space, development of effective geometric calibration method for system misalignment, and 3D image reconstruction development and implementation with quantitative degrading compensation for pinhole SPECT with both circular and helical scan. Two experiments evaluated the apparent metabolisable energy (AME) values for cereal grains fed with and without a blend of xylanase and phytase enzyme products to broiler chickens. The first experiment involved 30 high screenings grains (10 wheats, 11 barleys, 3 triticales, and 6 sorghums). The second experiment involved 50 grains (20 wheats, 13 barleys, 3 triticales and 14 sorghums) donated by commercial companies throughout Australia. Each experiment included "connectivity" grains used in previous experiments that contributed to the AusScan near infrared reflectance (NIR) calibration database. High strength, thermo-mechanically treated steels often require very careful control of welding procedures to ensure freedom from hydrogen assisted cold cracking (HACC) in the weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ) whilst avoiding undue loss of heat affected zone strength. In practice this leads to restricted operating envelopes and the requirement for rigorous procedure management. Yet, it is hard to find a comprehensive explicit account of concrete digital computation in information processing terms. The most basic and widely used way is ellipsoid fitting, which provides three principal axes for shape alignment, and is often solved by least square fitting. Many simulations of networks in computational neuroscience assume completely homogenous random networks of the Erdös–Rényi type, or regular networks, despite it being recognized for some time that anatomical brain networks are more complex in their connectivity and can, for example, exhibit the “scale-free” and “small-world” properties. We review the most well known algorithms for constructing networks with given non-homogeneous statistical properties and provide simple pseudo-code for reproducing such networks in software simulations. Many advanced steels fall within the peritectic composition range, which are notoriously difficult to cast due to cracking and breakout problems in the continuous casting process especially at high casting speeds. In this study an attempt was made to obtain practical understanding of the solidification and the δγ phase transformation of various commercial steels using high-temperature laser-scanning confocal microscopy. Under rapid cooling conditions the transformation morphology showed a massive-type of transition rather than a classical diffusion-controlled transformation.

A 300-level subject covering Sample Surveys and Experimental Design has now been taught jointly to the Universities of Wollongong and Newcastle for two years, first using video-conferencing and then the Access Grid. In both years the subject was delivered by the same two lectures. We provide an initial review of the subject. We discuss its organisation, the use of technology, changes in our teaching and administrative styles needed to cope with this mode of delivery, feedback from students and our reaction to all of these. It has been reported that Osama bin Laden's hard drives have been seized, hard drives that could conceivably contain information regarding the membership, funding and future plans of al-Qaeda. Information of this type would help anti-terrorism agencies enormously. The hard drives were recovered from bin Laden's compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad and are said to be encrypted with a encryption method known as AES-256. AES-256 is the current world standard for data encryption and is used by the likes of Wikileaks and the US Government to encrypt sensitive information.

The Bauschinger effect (a reduced yield stress at the start of reverse deformation following forward prestrain) is an important factor of strength development for cold metal forming technology. In steels, the magnitude of the Bauschinger effect depends on composition, through the presence of microalloy precipitates, and prior processing, through the size and distribution of the microalloy precipitates and the presence of retained work hardening. However, geothermal fields typically undergo significant changes in resource characteristics such as pressure, temperature and steam quality over their life span. The structure of the C*-algebras corresponding to even-dimensional mirror quantum spheres is investigated. It is shown that they are isomorphic to both Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of certain C*-correspondences and C*-algebras of certain labelled graphs. In order to achieve this, categories of labelled graphs and C*-correspondences are studied. A functor from labelled graphs to C*-correspondences is constructed, such that the corresponding associated C*-algebras are isomorphic. Furthermore, it is shown that C*-correspondences for the mirror quantum spheres arise via a general construction of restricted direct sum.

In the paper we present results of the research on polarization mode dispersion changes inside the polarimetric optical fiber sensors based on highly birefringent optical fibers embedded into composite materials with different angular orientations of the optical axes. Based on measurements made for different types of highly birefringent optical fiber sensors we have shown that strain sensitivities after lamination process are different in comparison to the data obtained before lamination. The use of electroactive polymeric materials for sensing and actuating applications is very attractive due to important properties like low operating voltage, low form factor, or high mechanical flexibility. However, its use has been conditioned by the lack of available processing methods for such materials. The deposition of thin layers is very easy by conventional techniques; however obtaining patterned layers is not a trivial task. This paper presents a methodology suitable to fabricate electroactive polymeric microstructures on large area devices. Structures ranging from ∼1, 5 mm to ∼100 μm width, with a thickness of ∼12 μm, were obtained.

Biodegradable poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) microfibers were prepared by electrospinning by varying the applied potential, solution flow rate and collector conditions. PLLA fibers with smoothly oriented and random morphologies were obtained and characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The optimum fiber orientation was obtained at 1000 rpm using a 20.3 cm diameter collecting drum, while for higher and lower drum rotation speeds, the rapid random motion of the jets resulted in a random fiber distribution. Commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) were functionalized by oxidation with HNO3, to introduce oxygen-containing surface groups, and by thermal treatments at different temperatures for their selective removal. The obtained samples were characterized by adsorption of N2 at -196°C, temperature-programmed desorption and determination of pH at the point of zero charge. CNT/poly(vinylidene fluoride) composites were prepared using the above CNT samples, with different filler fractions up to 1 wt%. It was found that oxidation reduced composite conductivity for a given concentration, shifted the percolation threshold to higher concentrations, and had no significant effect in the dielectric response.

Nanocomposites of the self-forming core-shell Co-MgO nanoparticles, which were of approximately 100 nm in diameter, and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer have been prepared. When the polymer is crystallized in the a-phase, the introduction of the nanoparticles leads to nucleation of the g-phase of PVDF, increasing also the melting temperature of the polymer. With the introduction of the Co-MgO particles, the dielectric constant of the material slightly increases and the storage modulus decreases with respect to the values obtained for the pure polymer.

The roll-casting technology of 5000 series aluminum alloy is one of the difficulties at present. Roll-casting technology was employed in this paper and high quality 5005 aluminum alloy sheets were fabricated successfully under different conditions. The solidification of melt in roll-casting process is the rapid directional solidification. The effect of magnetostatic field on microstructure of 5005 aluminum alloy sheet by roll-casting has been investigated and analyzed. The results indicate that imposing magnetostatic field can refine the grains of 5005 aluminum alloy.
