Title Ix And Intercollegiate Athletics: An Analysis Of Title Ix Policy Implementation, Andrea Crilly
Title Ix And Intercollegiate Athletics: An Analysis Of Title Ix Policy Implementation, Andrea Crilly
Honors Theses
This paper explores Title IX policy implementation in intercollegiate athletics and the charge that, in the implementation of the policy, the goal of offering equal access to both men and women in athletic programs has not been fully met. The paper is presented in three parts. The first summarizes the history of Title IX policy development from the passage of the Education Amendments of 1972 to the Office of Civil Rights' Intercollegiate Athletics Policy Interpretation and Title IX Investigators' Manual which serve as current policy. The second is a "case study" of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga that explores …

Reevaluating U.S. Intellectual Property Right Policy In The Face Of Globalization: Moving Beyond Trips And Special 301, Warren Jr. Newberry
Honors Theses
In this paper, I intend to expand upon Mastanduno's ground-breaking inquiry by analyzing the motivating factors behind the behavior of the United States in its attempt to establish and maintain an international intellectual property rights regime. The international intellectual property rights system, established at the 1994 Uruguay Round of GATT, represents an international agreement with unprecedented reach into domestic state affairs. This ambitious attempt at establishing a high international norm of intellectual property protection was created as a result of inflexible American resolve. I will attempt to identify the initial impetus that helped define U.S. action--was it relative gains considerations …

Increasing Attendance At Voluntary Academic Tutoring Sessions On A Large University, Meghan Sadler
Increasing Attendance At Voluntary Academic Tutoring Sessions On A Large University, Meghan Sadler
Honors Theses
High attrition rates have become an impetus for colleges and universities to develop programs to help students during the first years of their education. Various services such as supplemental instruction, tutoring, testing, counseling, college success seminars, and remedial help are offered to help students be successful in their university studies. While these services may be offered, encouraging students to voluntarily attend these sessions is a problem. This study was conducted to analyze the effect of prompts on improving the attendance at voluntary content tutoring sessions at a large Midwestern University. The participants were college students enrolled in any course that …

An Analysis Of The Past, Present, And Future Of Title Ix In Intercollegiate Athletics Through Various Case Studies, Specifically Western Michigan University, Tara L. Becker
Honors Theses
Although collegiate athletics i only a small portion of Title IX, it has been the most widely discussed and controversial part of the law to implement. It seems that colleges and universities have had the most trouble complying with the specifics of the law. However, they have made great strides since the days of the predominantly male world of collegiate sports in the past. This paper examines historical controversies, and takes a closer look at the impact of Title IX at Western Michigan University.
A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of High Capacity Chip Mills In The Southeastern United States, Blair Hutchins
A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of High Capacity Chip Mills In The Southeastern United States, Blair Hutchins
Honors Theses
This study on the costs and benefits of high capacity chip mills located in the southeastern United States stems from a personal interest gained in the subject through my Environmental Science minor. During my courses of study, factors such as philosophy and ecology were brought into discussions both for and against these chip mills. However, there was no economic data presented from either side. This caused me to wonder whether chip mills were, from an economic perspective, a positive or negative industry for this region. The present study will present a compilation of facts and data on the economic analysis …

An Assessment Of The 2000 Fourth Congressional District Race, Amber E. Wilson
An Assessment Of The 2000 Fourth Congressional District Race, Amber E. Wilson
Honors Theses
Prior to the November 7 election, incumbent Republican Jay Dickey aspired to maintain his eight-year hold on the fourth congressional district seat, while challenger, Mike Ross, a Democratic State Senator, had high hopes for a partisan restoration. In the end, Ross upset the incumbent carrying 51 percent of the 212,160 votes cast, a narrow 4, 126-vote margin. This paper assesses the strategic, tactical, and fiscal factors contributing to Ross's success in overriding incumbency advantages and reclaiming the seat for the Democrats. More specifically, it compares and contrasts candidate and noncandidate communications. Indeed, communication was the key component to these coordinated …
Transitions From Isolation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Contemporary Ouachita Mountains Hillman Culture, Reyda L. Taylor
Transitions From Isolation: An Ethnographic Study Of A Contemporary Ouachita Mountains Hillman Culture, Reyda L. Taylor
Honors Theses
[Excerpt] Among these American hillmen descendants is the MacCleod Family (pseudonym). In early 2001, I heard stories about a clan that lived in the Ouachita woods like "savages." Not originally from Arkansas, I had often heard scornful jokes about Arkansas being a backward state. This perpetuated stereotype enticed m to find out if these extreme MacCleod tales were true. What I found in the region from which the stories originated was a large extended family. I also found that the stories I initially heard were not the only inflated tales circulating the region regarding this particular group. As I become …

Wolves In Sheeps' Clothing: Creationist Manipulation Of Kansas Science Standards, Nathan Christopher Gehlert
Honors Theses
So the question that animates this paper is this: what happens when a state's education policy seeks to make popular social and religious values a central part of its education standards in direct confrontation with the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution? I will try to answer that question in three ways. First, I will examine the tactics used in the manipulation of curricula to reflect social and religious values, with special focus on the Kansas case. Second, I will try to ascertain the determinants of success in these efforts; under what conditions are movements to …

The Legitimacy Of The Modern Militia, Jonathan Huber
The Legitimacy Of The Modern Militia, Jonathan Huber
Honors Theses
On May 16, 2001, barring any last minute court appeals, Timothy c Veigh will be executed for his role in the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He along with thousands of other Americans who have joined private armies, known as militia, to fight the American government share a common belief that the American government is corrupt at its core and actions such as this one are at the very least patriotic. To most Americans, however, acts such as the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building are not only terroristic, but demonstrate the need …

Religious Coping And College Adjustment: A Study Of An Elite Sample, Jeannie Shannon Mood
Religious Coping And College Adjustment: A Study Of An Elite Sample, Jeannie Shannon Mood
Honors Theses
This study sought to further explore the possible role of religious involvement on college adjustment. Religion was viewed as a multidimensional construct, assessed by means of the Religious Problem Solving Scales (RPSS) developed by Pargament et al. (1988). Nine different areas of adjustment were targeted with the College Adjustment Scales (CAS) developed by Anton and Reed (1991). Freshman honors students were assessed at the beginning and end of their first semester in college. Data analysis was conducted in three parts: the interscorer reliability of both the RPSS and CAS, the temporal stability of the RPSS, and the criterion-related validity of …

Environmental Effects Of Economic Sanctions: The Cuban Experience, Amanda Carucci
Environmental Effects Of Economic Sanctions: The Cuban Experience, Amanda Carucci
Honors Theses
Cuba has pervaded U.S. consciousness for several decades. For nearly fifty years the United States has continuously threatened and feared one of our closest neighbors. Lawmakers have fretted over the stubbornness of its communist leadership. Though the longevity and persistence of Fidel Castro's rule might be an understandable concern for U.S. policyrnakers, there are several other issues apparent within the island which are certainly worthy of our attention. The highways are adorned with colorful billboards praising the communist government and Fidel Castro exudes pride and confidence during each of his public appearances. Yet beneath this poorly constructed veneer, the country …
