Anger And Reconciliation: Relations Between The United States And India, 1953-1956, Tom Donahue May 2000

Anger And Reconciliation: Relations Between The United States And India, 1953-1956, Tom Donahue

Honors Theses

When Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected President of the United States in 1952, America held its breath to see how a Republican administration would handle the Cold War. By 1952, due particularly to the costs of the Korean conflict, enthusiasm for President Harry Truman and Secretary of State Dean Acheson's policy of "containment" of Communism reached new lows. Eisenhower had been elected with a mandate from the citizenry: to get tough on communism. The candidate and his advisers were determined to prove to the Communists that the United States had rurned over a new leaf. There would be no more …

Consumed By Faith: The Development Of Christian Fundamentalism And Its Applications In Contemporary Society, Laura M. Gagne Jan 2000

Consumed By Faith: The Development Of Christian Fundamentalism And Its Applications In Contemporary Society, Laura M. Gagne

Honors Theses

My research aims to understand how and why fundamentalists justify violence against people who do not fit their profile of "righteous" or "saved" persons, such as abortion doctors and clinic workers, gays and lesbians, and Jews. The first section of this paper travels through the history of fundamentalism since its origins in the British and American apocalipticism, or belief in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. However, my history of Protestant Fundamentalism in the United States will focus on the ways in which Fundamentalism developed in response to many changes in American social structure. I interpret Fundamentalism as an anti-modern …

New Balance Of Threat: East Asian Alliance Formation And Capacity Development, Ben Humphreys Jan 2000

New Balance Of Threat: East Asian Alliance Formation And Capacity Development, Ben Humphreys

Honors Theses

The different analyses and predictions of alliance behavior and capacity development advocated in the literature are based on the application of different theoretical perspectives to international relationships. As none of these theories dominate the field, the contradictory predictions do not empower current policy-makers with any clear sense of the future of alliance formation in East Asia. In this thesis I present the major theoretical frameworks that explain alliance formation behavior. Then I examine the empirical evidence independent of any theoretical considerations. I then apply the empirical evidence regarding capacity development in East Asia during 1990-1998 to these theories to determine …

"I Have Lived Long And Variously In The World": The Politics And Rhetoric Of Edmund Burke, Amy M. Sandidge Jan 2000

"I Have Lived Long And Variously In The World": The Politics And Rhetoric Of Edmund Burke, Amy M. Sandidge

Honors Theses

In the words of Woodrow Wilson, the works of Edmund Burke are "stamped in the colors of his extraordinary imagination. The movement takes your breath and quickens your pulses. The glow and power of the matter rejuvenates your faculties." One cannot help but react viscerally to Burke; the brilliant, blustering Irishman demands attention and response. Some regard him as "the first and most important exponent" of the "theoretical reaction against. .. the tenets of liberalism ... [which] came to be called conservatism." Coleridge called him "a great man;" Victorian liberals even considered him a fellow utilitarian and "the greatest thinker …

The survey asked general questions concerning speech and language development in children . Parents with four or more children scored higher on the survey than parents with three fewer children. Implications for further studies are discussed.

Adult Attachment Styles And Their Relation To Personality Characteristics, Mai Friesen Swan Jan 2000

Adult Attachment Styles And Their Relation To Personality Characteristics, Mai Friesen Swan

Honors Theses

This study investigated the concept that attachment style relates to emotional and social well-being by using measures of locus of control, stress-management, and time perspective. Independent t tests compared the high and low quartiles of scores on secure, avoidant, and anxious-ambivalent sub scales of the Adult Attachment Scale (Collins & Read, 1990) on measures of personality. Significant results from the 62 (15 men & 47 women) college students (ages 17- 24) indicate that secure attachments have high past positive and hardiness scores and low sensation-seeking scores. Both insecure attachment styles have high past negative, high present fatalistic, and low hardiness …

Radio's Influence On Music From 1919 To 1926, Aaron Hawley Jan 2000

Radio's Influence On Music From 1919 To 1926, Aaron Hawley

Honors Theses

Advances in technology have dramatically changed the lives of Americans throughout the twentieth century. Many of these advancements have become commonplace. For instance, the words "airplane," "computer," "radio," and "television" were not common a hundred years ago. Today, even small children know the definitions of these words. In addition, as new technologies develop, methods of accomplishing tasks change. These changes are then incorporated into our normal way of life. This gradual development causes many people to fail to consider the true implications of the technology on their way of life. Aspects of American's lives that used to be considered luxuries …

The Clapham Sect : An Investigation Into The Effects Of Deep Faith In A Personal God On A Change Effort, Victoria Marple Jan 2000

The Clapham Sect : An Investigation Into The Effects Of Deep Faith In A Personal God On A Change Effort, Victoria Marple

Honors Theses

This study was undertaken primarily out of an apparent inability of leadership material to answer the question of "Why" in their studies of change efforts. Despite many scholarly materials on how societal alterations occurs and steps to make social action successful, little has been written regarding the internal influences on individuals involved in these efforts and on how these influences make the leader or group successful. This particular case study has been chosen because of its clear portrayal of various leadership theories including catalytic leadership, charismatic leadership and change theory. Moreover, writings about the Clapham Sect clearly evidence that the …

An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert Jan 2000

An Ethical Exploration Of Gender Inequality In Church Leadership, Elizabeth Rickert

Honors Theses

An Ethical Exploration of Gender Inequality in Church Leadership provides a moral analysis of the current status of women leaders in the church. Drawing on socio- analytical, ethical-theological, and leadership studies perspectives, this thesis sheds light on the disparity between the theological principles of equality and the ecclesiastical practices of inequality that create an unhealthy moral environment in churches.

Gender inequality in church leadership exists today in both the congregations permitting the ordination of women as well as in those that do not. This widespread discrepancy between rules and practices concerning women leaders in the church points to the socially …

European Integration And The Expansion Of The European Union: Identity Formation In Europe, Aaron P. Boesenecker Dec 1999

European Integration And The Expansion Of The European Union: Identity Formation In Europe, Aaron P. Boesenecker

Honors Theses

The states of Europe and the European Union are facing one of the greatest challenges since the founding of the European Community in the 1950s. The collapse of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War have served to strengthen the position of the European Union as a guarantor of democracy, peace, and fundamental human rights in Europe. However, crises such as the Balkan conflicts of recent years have also exposed inherent weaknesses in the Union's ability to respond to the changing international environment. As the Amsterdam Treaty entered into effect on 1 May 1999, the EU marked a …

Twenty adolescent women using services at the Kalamazoo County Family Planning Clinic were interviewed using a protocol developed by the student investigator. Their responses were analyzed for themes and patterns. The majority of the adolescents were aware of HIV/AIDS and were using condoms on a consistent basis. Using the Health Belief Model (HBM) as the theoretical framework, suggestions were made to help improve area school programs such as practicing role-play during class and offering more classes in greater detail. Many of the adolescents recommended having more classes offered in school that cover the topics of STDs and health education in …

Community Service Day, Dotty J. Giordano, Ian F. Koffler

Honors Theses

There is a strong need for students at the University of Richmond to increase their involvement within the Richmond community, primarily in the area of service. This needed change in the relationship between the University and the city stems from an overwhelming concern expressed by Richmond students who do not feel as if they are connected to their surrounding community. One of the most dramatic ways to improve this relationship is to encourage college students to express themselves intellectually and socially through community service.

Today's society requires service from both leaders and followers of all ages. This focus of service …

The issue of children and advertising came to light in the 1970s and has continued to be a topic of much discussion ever since. In started in the 1970s when the Action for Children's Television petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to eliminate all commercials from children's TV programs. Then in January 1973, the major networks agreed to reduce commercial time in children's weekend programs from 16 minutes an hour to 12 minutes an hour.
