Since the end of the Cold War, the international community has been concerned about three states crossing the nuclear threshold: Iraq, Ukraine, and the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea). In the Iraqi case, the United States used tactics of punishment and coercion. After the Persian Gulf War of 1991, United Nations and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) special inspectors went into Iraq to search for not only signs of nuclear weapons production, but also weapons themselves. Foiled by Baghdad, the U.S. launched airstrikes on three separate occasions, hoping to force Iraq to comply with UN Security …

This paper traces how hegemonic forces create boundaries through the specific examples of the Lebanese and Franco-Americans in Waterville, Maine. These two immigrant groups entered into Waterville after an English-Scottish Protestant majority had already been established in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The Franco-American immigration from Quebec extended well over a century and the flow of people out of Canada can generally be studied into two distinct waves. People were constantly coming into Waterville from Quebec, and a small number would return to live in Canada after a time. It is also critical to understand that Franco-Americans were settling …

This paper will outline the changes in the nonprofit sector since 1945 and will attempt to show that these changes are the result of various shifts in the contextual environment in which the sector has developed. This review of the history of the nonprofit sector will trace the influence of such factors as World War two and the controversy which surrounded foundations mainly until the 1960s. Other contextual factors include more academic transformations such as the influence of Keynesian economic theory and the 1960's research on the roles of mediating structures in American democracy.

This project was a continuation of several years of work attempting to integrate leadership into elementary, middle and high school curriculum. This project adds new insight into the realm of K-12 (kindergarten through twelfth grade) leadership curriculum. The literature on voting participation suggests a number of factors that should affect voter turnout differences including the legal incentives or hindrances acting directly on individual citizens. In this study I examine registration laws and how they may play a role in the stability over voter turnout between presidential and midterm elections. Specifically, this research concentrates on classifying each individual state into groups with easier and those with more strict registration requirements.
