Communication In Leadership, George C. Ruotolo Jan 1994

Communication In Leadership, George C. Ruotolo

Honors Theses

Through my leadership studies I have found that the one common link between virtually all great leaders has been the comprehension and mastery of the art of communication. From those who were powerful and influential orators, to those who lead through the written word, to others who found alternate means such as non-verbal (i.e .. setting examples) methods, each recognized and utilized the process and importance of communication. It was this finding that has lead me to believe that at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies we should teach about communication and its role in the leadership process.

Hence, I …

The Children Are Singing. Can You Hear Them?, Kristen Leigh Netsel Jan 1994

The Children Are Singing. Can You Hear Them?, Kristen Leigh Netsel

Honors Theses

Everyday, millions of people worldwide awake to silence. They don't hear the sounds of mom making breakfast and coffee being made. They don't hear the sound of the neighbors' dog barking as the paper boy rides by on his bike. They aren't awaken by the steady shrill of the alarm clock. These people are deaf and they can barely hear the sound of their own voices, if at all. This is a world inhabited by 14 million Americans but remains unfamiliar to the rest of the population and there is little interaction between their world and ours. In fact, little …

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard Jan 1994

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard

Honors Theses

It is important to create an accepting environment for children to begin to appreciate faith in God. Adults need to recognize that even though children may not be able to talk about God, they do have an ability to think about and appreciate God (Lester 174). Because children have an active imagination and are just beginning to develop some logic skills, this is an easy segue for a child to understand many of the stories and parables that adults may discount. When children ask questions, it is important to get them to think through the issue and to provide some …

Looking Past The Surface : A Look At The Office Of Senate And Its Environment And The Implications Of Public Versus Private Morality, Jennifer A. Chaippetta Jan 1994

Looking Past The Surface : A Look At The Office Of Senate And Its Environment And The Implications Of Public Versus Private Morality, Jennifer A. Chaippetta

Honors Theses

By interning at the State Headquarters of Senator Robb's office, I was able to learn the nature of the leader/ constituent relationship first hand. I witnessed first hand how the government can be responsive to its constituency. Daily, I witnessed the business of constituent services that Senator Robb's office offered, be it through special projects such as the Salem VA hospital investigation, the constant concentration on the constituent through casework, and the direct interaction with the constituent. Without this leadership experience I would never have realized the essentially service related aspect of the Senator's work, and the transactional relationship that …

The Regional Economic Impact Of The Closure Of Fort Mcclellan, Alabama, Stacey E. Byington May 1993

The Regional Economic Impact Of The Closure Of Fort Mcclellan, Alabama, Stacey E. Byington

Honors Theses

The complete effects of closing Fort McClellan cannot be easily measured. The sociological and political ramifications - though an important part of the economic costs - will not be discussed in this project as they are not readily quantifiable. This project analyzes the regional economic impact of Fort McClellan, Alabama; and hence, the impact of its closing. Although its purpose is providing national defense, a military base also contributes employment, service, training, and culture to its surrounding communities. As of 1989, Fort McClellan employed nearly eight thousand military personnel and two thousand civilians. The Fort's economic impact includes expenditures of …

Age And Personality Differences In The Choice Of Mnemonic Strategy, Gretchen Witte Apr 1993

Age And Personality Differences In The Choice Of Mnemonic Strategy, Gretchen Witte

Honors Theses

Personality as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator has been shown to change with age. Specifically, older adults become more sensing, while younger adults remain more intuitive on the SN dimension. Memory and the use of mnemonic strategies, or memory aids, changes with age as well. Older adults typically report more problems with their memory, yet use fewer memory strategy aids. If adults learn and use memory aids consistent with intuitive processing in youth, the hypothesized transition to a more sensing modality in old age may cause the use of intuitive strategies to decline. Thus, the finding that older adults …

Voting Rights, Reapportionment, And Majority-Minority Districts, Christy Tosh Jan 1993

Voting Rights, Reapportionment, And Majority-Minority Districts, Christy Tosh

Honors Theses

The challenge is to navigate the untrodden area of reapportionment, in particular majority-minority districts. The Supreme Court has ruled in various reapportionment cases, yet these cases continue to plague the dockets of the United States Supreme Court. The focus of research is to evaluate the new phenomenon of majority-minority districts as it has progressed through constitutional amendments, civil and voting rights acts, and Supreme Court cases, all of which culminate in the 1992 elections. The 1990 Census and reapportionment were the birth of majority-minority districts. In creating these districts, one must look at the most effective percentage breakdowns in each …

The Effects Of The Caribbean Basin Initiative On Jamaica's Trade, Arlene Hendricks

Honors Theses

This paper will analyze the export-led model for development by looking at the intended versus the actual results of the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) as it relates to the Caribbean country of Jamaica. The CBI was passed into law by the U.S. Congress under the Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA) in 1983. An exploration is made of the circumstances leading to the CBI, the main precepts and legislation of the CBI, its implementation and its effects. This paper also discusses the amendment to the CBERA, known as CBI II, which was passed into law effective October 1,1990. There will …

Efficacious Impression Management In Minority Recruitment And Retention Practices, Amy L. Kristof Apr 1992

Efficacious Impression Management In Minority Recruitment And Retention Practices, Amy L. Kristof

Honors Theses

The present study suggests impression management strategies that companies can use to more effectively recruit and retain minority workers. As the workforce composition changes over the next ten years, the need for companies to attract and retain qualified diverse workers will become increasingly important. The present study focused on two minority groups, women and senior citizens. These minority workers were asked to rate the importance of suggestions given by personnel adminstrators, as to what things would attract members of their minority group to an organization. Both groups cited honesty, fair treatment, and hiring and promotion based on ability and not …

Changes In Spatial Learning Ability In Female Rats Due To Neonatal Transplantation Of Male Hippocampal Tissue, David B. Carr Apr 1992

Changes In Spatial Learning Ability In Female Rats Due To Neonatal Transplantation Of Male Hippocampal Tissue, David B. Carr

Honors Theses

It has long been acknowledged that sex differences occur in the performance of learning tasks. Specifically, it has been found that males typically outperform females in spatial learning tasks such as maze tasks. Recently, evidence has emerged which directly links sex differences in behavior to specific regions of the central nervous system (CNS). This evidence indicates that sexually dimorphic behaviors may be altered by the neonatal transplantation of opposite sex brain tissue. This research sought to extend these findings by examining the effects of neonatal transplantation of male hippocampal tissue on the spatial learning ability of adult females in three …

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore Jan 1992

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore

Honors Theses

PREFACE: I would have to cite the five months I spent in Cork, Ireland as the biggest motivating factor behind this paper. I knew next to nothing about Northern Ireland before this period. Soon after my arrival in Cork, however, I became fascinated with the socio-religious anomaly to the north of me. Since I became a religion major at Colby, I have always been interested in liberation theology. As I read about the poverty, injustice and violence that pervades Northern Ireland, I was reminded of the context in which Gustavo Gutierrez, Tissa Balasuriya, and Elsa Tamez write and live. The …

Student's Perceptions And Experiences Of Sexual Harassment At The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Wendy W. Davis

Honors Theses

This research was conducted to examine students' perceptions and experiences of sexual harassment in higher education. The study was designed and administered in such a way as to address four concerns which have not been effectively handled in previous studies. These specific concerns are as follows: (a) the nonrandom selection of students, (b) the exclusion of males in samples, (c) the limited number of research methods used, and (d) the lack of a standardized definition for sexual harassment. The first three issues focus on the need to obtain representative samples of the college population.
