The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen Jan 1991

The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen

Honors Theses

My thesis rests on the notion that, because of the increase of freedoms in the Soviet Union today, many republics are demanding that their autonomy be restored and that this nationality crisis, an unforeseen and unwanted byproduct of recent reforms, has grown into such a disaster that it is now actually impairing the whole reform movement in the Soviet Union as civil unrest and strife are beginning to threaten the stability of this huge empire.

Ethnic identity is not something that can be hidden, changed, forced, or converted, nor will national and cultural roots simply disappear over time. Thus, the …

Happiness And Satisfaction : Subjective Well-Being In The Work Force, Lori J. Sohns Jan 1991

Happiness And Satisfaction : Subjective Well-Being In The Work Force, Lori J. Sohns

Honors Theses

Workers from seven southeastern companies (80 subjects) completed surveys consisting of demographic information and subjective well-being (SWB) indicators. Results indicate significantly lower life satisfaction in females than in males; income level and education do not show significant positive relationships with happiness, however, total household income does; and a statistically significant positive relationship between job satisfaction and general satisfaction were found and were strongest in males. Correlations between six of the SWB measures revealed highly significant correlations between five of the measures. A multiple regression analysis of satisfaction and happiness revealed several variables which were predictive of these constructs.

Alientation And Internal-External Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Student Political Participation, Joanne M. Miller Jan 1991

Alientation And Internal-External Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Student Political Participation, Joanne M. Miller

Honors Theses

Seventy-two undergraduates (ages 18-23) from The University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University participated in this study to examine the potential predictors for student political participation. After methodological problems of past research - such as the confounding of activism and ideology and the specific focus on activism in the 1960's - were corrected, Dean's (1961) Alienation scale, Rotter's (1966) Internal-External Locus of Control scale, and Olsen's (1969) Alienation scale were used to predict political activity levels, as measured by Kerpelman's (1972) Activity scale. A stepwise multiple regression procedure showed that futility (a subscale of Olsen's Alienation scale) was the only …

False Hopes: The United States Senate And Campaign Finance Reform 1980-1990, James Heimbach Jan 1991

False Hopes: The United States Senate And Campaign Finance Reform 1980-1990, James Heimbach

Honors Theses

The cost of winning a seat in the United States Senate has risen dramatically over the last ten years. It has become the norm rather than the exception to spend over $1 million on a campaign. For example, in the 34 Senate races in the 1988 election, 32 campaigns spent over $1 million. Due to the necessity to raise more and more money, candidates have had to turn to alternative sources of campaign funds. Thus, the rise in campaign costs has been accompanied by a rise in the role of the political action committee (PAC). PACs are special interest groups …

The Benefits Of Women's Education : Warming Up A Cold College Climate For Women Undergraduates, Shannon Riley Jan 1991

The Benefits Of Women's Education : Warming Up A Cold College Climate For Women Undergraduates, Shannon Riley

Honors Theses

The existence of sex discrimination in American college classrooms, and the harmful effects of such discrimination on women students have been well established. The present study sought to determine if exposure to women's education could aid students in overcoming some of these deleterious effects. Twenty-eight female introductory psychology students and eleven women's studies students read various pieces of research and discussed the readings in experimental sessions. The introductory psychology students in the control group were educated about various well documented gender differences, while the introductory psychology and women's studies students in the experimental groups learned about sex discrimination in college …

Analysis Of Artifacts From Maclellan Island Archaeological Survey, Beth Marie Fowler

Honors Theses

The focus of this report is Maclellan Island, also known as Chattanooga Island. Maclellan Islandis located in the Tennessee River directly under the Veteran's Bridge from about river mile 464.3 to 464.9. In the summer of 1983 a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga archaeological field school surveyed part of the island to determine if any historically significant sites might be harmed by the construction of the Veteran's Bridge. During the survey both prehistoric and historic remains were recovered. Although I did not participate in the 1983 field school, I did spend about 150 hours in the lab analyzing all of …

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe Apr 1990

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe

Honors Theses

Studying the structure and the effectiveness of ads can suggest how and why advertisers' commercials appeal to consumers. Narrowing this study down to one medium-television, one product--athletic shoes, and one audience-teenagers, can better identify commercials' appeals and their effectiveness. The study of television athletic shoe advertisements, as viewed by teenagers, provides primary data about both the ads themselves and about their appeals to the 15- to 18-year-old audience.

The Changing Roles Of Women In The People's Republic Of China, Priya Helweg Apr 1990

The Changing Roles Of Women In The People's Republic Of China, Priya Helweg

Honors Theses

The present Chinese government has persistently claimed that women have been completely emancipated through the enforcement of Communist ideology. In spite of the claim that women in modern China 'hold up half the sky' traditional beliefs continue to influence the position of women in contemporary China. As a consequence, women in the People's Republic of China — especially students — find themselves in a situation of confusing contradictions and frustrating obstacles. Traditional ideologies, as seen in the patriarchal kinship structure and the economic and political systems, aid rather than hinder the present government as it maintains a similar relation to …

Unofficial Latvian Political Organizations In The Gorbachev Era: Their Evolution, Accomplishments, And Goals, Peter Albertins Jan 1990

Unofficial Latvian Political Organizations In The Gorbachev Era: Their Evolution, Accomplishments, And Goals, Peter Albertins

Honors Theses

Since the people called Latvians began living on the shores of the Baltic Sea, they have almost continually been in conflict with their neighbors, including the Estonians, Lithuanians, Swedes, Germans, and Russians. The major enemy to the Latvians over the centuries, however, has been the Russians. Perhaps this is because the Russians always wanted access to the Baltic Sea and the rest of Europe, but whatever the case, Russians and Latvians have not had a friendly history.

Friendship Potential, Knowledge, Skills, And Expectations Of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder And Normal Children, Laura A. Taylor Jan 1990

Friendship Potential, Knowledge, Skills, And Expectations Of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder And Normal Children, Laura A. Taylor

Honors Theses

The present study assessed the differences in the friendship patterns of nonmedicated children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children without the disorder. 22 children with ADHD and 23 normal controls and each of their friends completed an interview designed to evaluate their friendship potential, knowledge, skills, expectations, and quality. These children were divided at age 9 years, 8 months into younger and older groups in order to assess age differences across the variables. Results illustrated that children with ADHD have lower levels of friendship potential than children without ADHD especially in terms of their degree of similarity with their …

Effect Of Memory Training On Memory Performance, Self-Efficacy Rarings And Patterns Of Attributions In Older Adults, Krista E. Larson Jan 1990

Effect Of Memory Training On Memory Performance, Self-Efficacy Rarings And Patterns Of Attributions In Older Adults, Krista E. Larson

Honors Theses

An investigation of age differences in memory performance for list and text recall was conducted in the context of a training manipulation. It was hypothesized that there would be age differences in performance, measures of self-efficacy, and attributional style, but that training in memory strategies would have an effect on those differences. The training manipulation appeared to be more effective for the list portion of the experiment, and improvements in performance and changes in attributions were induced. The text portion of the experiment revealed the predicted age differences, but training failed to elicit any of the other predicted effects. The …

When The Equality Rule Is Violated : Factors Affecting Consumption Of Physical, Spatial And Temporal Resources, Caryn E. Herlocker Jan 1990

When The Equality Rule Is Violated : Factors Affecting Consumption Of Physical, Spatial And Temporal Resources, Caryn E. Herlocker

Honors Theses

Three studies explored the processes by which different types of shared resources were consumed by group members. Subjects shared physical, spatial, and temporal resources. The resources were arranged in either a partitioned or nonpartitioned form. Subjects did so with an implied withdrawal of either onethird or one-twelfth and while participating in either a sharing or an accuracy instruction. Results for each resource provided partial support for a deliberate motive of greed and an inadvertent overestimation bias affecting subjects' withdrawals. The results also suggest that different types of resources may be consumed according to different criteria. Suggestions are made for methodological …

Gesturing In An Interview Situation : Effects Of Gender, Renee R. Tillinger Jan 1990

Gesturing In An Interview Situation : Effects Of Gender, Renee R. Tillinger

Honors Theses

Subjects observed a prerecorded job interview of a male or a female applicant whose gesturing was either broad (hands/arms moving away from the body), narrow (hands/arms moving close to the body), or not used (hands folded on lap). Subjects then completed evaluations on the applicant and the type of gesturing used. Results suggest that in placing individuals in jobs, women stereotype both men and women according to the type of gesturing used. Men, on the other hand, stereotype only men according to the type of gesturing used, but stereotyped women regardless of the type of gesturing used. Implications of this …

Highway Improvements And Economic Growth: A Study Of Lee Highway Between Airport Road And Shallowford Road, Travis Lee Hayes Mar 1989

Highway Improvements And Economic Growth: A Study Of Lee Highway Between Airport Road And Shallowford Road, Travis Lee Hayes

Honors Theses

When I first selected this topic to research for an honors project, the question I asked was: Does economic growth in an area serve as a catalyst for highway improvement projects, or do highway improvement projects cause economic growth? The segment of Lee Highway between Airport Road and Shallowford Road in Chattanooga has experienced quite a bit of economic growth in recent years, and this stretch of road has been improved by the addition of more traffic lanes. By focusing my research on this particular highway, I felt that I would gain insight into my question. In this paper I …

Role Satisfaction In Working Mothers : A Comparison Of Occupational Status, Mary G. O'Donnell Jan 1989

Role Satisfaction In Working Mothers : A Comparison Of Occupational Status, Mary G. O'Donnell

Honors Theses

The effects of employment on a working mother's overall role satisfaction was examined as a function of occupational status (professional, middle management, working class). Sixty women of differing employment levels were given a questionnaire of items concerning their experiences as working mothers. Professional women were found to be at an advantage. They possesed significantly higher levels of work orientation and job satisfaction than both middle management and working class women, and higher levels of family satisfaction than working class women. Professional women were also slightly more satisfied with their roles, but this effect was not significant. A stepwise multiple regression …

Activation Of Social Heuristics In Social Decision Making Tasks As A Function Of Leadership Role Assignment, Amber B. Keating Jan 1989

Activation Of Social Heuristics In Social Decision Making Tasks As A Function Of Leadership Role Assignment, Amber B. Keating

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of assigning leadership roles implying varying degrees of social responsibility along with examining lay peoples' perceptions of these roles. Using 105 subjects, a 3 (leadership role) x 2 (resource type) design was used to examine how leaders make decisions about sharing resources in groups. First, 41 subjects rated the perceived degree of social responsibility for each of the 32 roles. In the next phase, another 64 subjects were assigned one of three leadership roles (supervisor, guide, or leader) and were asked to take that type of leader's deserved amount of …

The Effects Of Caffeine On Operant Behavior In The Mongolian Gerbil, Stephanie L. Myers Jan 1989

The Effects Of Caffeine On Operant Behavior In The Mongolian Gerbil, Stephanie L. Myers

Honors Theses

The present study looks at the effects of stomach loads of caffeine on operant behavior in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). Four male and four female gerbils were trained to a fixed interval schedule of 30 seconds with Noyes 4.5 mg rodent pellets used for reinforcement. A data collection and analysis package for Apple computers was used to measure the post-reinforcement response frequencies and number of reinforcements. Data was collected using a baseline of saline stomach loads of 1% of body weight, and then stomach loads of ascending concentrations caffeine mixed with saline (10, 20, 40, 60 mg/kg) with two to …
