Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman Jan 1976

Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman

Honors Theses

Mr. Wordsworth posed an interesting question. What should a child know about death?

Often we try to protect children from death. Euphemisms are used regarding death. People and pets do not die, they "pass away," "go to sleep," or "go to live in heaven." When a death occurs in a family, the adults often say of a young child, "It doesn't seem to bother him. Maybe he doesn't realize what has happened." Other people may mention that "He has accepted it so well. Children adapt so easily."

Presidential Impeachment: Must It Lie For A Crime?, Monte L. Brown Apr 1975

Presidential Impeachment: Must It Lie For A Crime?, Monte L. Brown

Honors Theses

Not since Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 has presidential impeachment been seriously considered. But in 1974 our country, for the second time in it's history, faced the possibility that our President may, in the words of the Constitution, "be re moved from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." It was this great, but unfortunate event in our history, that prompted me to write this thesis.

Sexism In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman

Honors Theses

The Little Miss Muffet syndrome, which depicts females as helpless, easily frightened, and dreadfully dull occurs repeatedly in children's literature.

Food Sources Of Tomorrow, Pauletta Flowers Jan 1975

Food Sources Of Tomorrow, Pauletta Flowers

Honors Theses

In one of the most astonishing assessments of the world food situations yet delivered, five scientists told the House Subcommittee on Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation and the Environment that the World Food Conference had failed to come to grips with the underlying causes of the present food crisis. They declared that the United States had already begun a policy of triage, deciding which people shall live and which shall starve on the basis of political considerations.

University of Wisconsin ecologist Grant Cottam, said that the delegates had failed to face the possibility that the world's "carrying capacity" may have already …

Church Library Project Trinity Baptist Church Benton, Arkansas, Joyce Ann Kaufman Jan 1975

Church Library Project Trinity Baptist Church Benton, Arkansas, Joyce Ann Kaufman

Honors Theses

Trinity Baptist Church Library was organized in 1968 as a project of the local Women's Missionary Union. It has been under the direction of several different people, thus the library had been subjected to several different systems of management. None of the aforementioned library directors had any training in library science, so not only were their procedures diversified but they were also sometimes incorrect.

It was my task to being correcting the errors that had been made and to initiate some new programs that would be beneficial to the church library system.

Folklore: A Study And Tales From The Ozarks, Sharon Hibbard Jan 1975

Folklore: A Study And Tales From The Ozarks, Sharon Hibbard

Honors Theses

From its inception, folktale research has had a two-pronged aim: it has been interested, on the one hand, in the nature and origins of oral narration not fixed in writing; and it has been interested in folk culture as expressed in the content and form of the folktale. These two points of view have resulted in two different kinds of research methods. One has sprung essentially from comparative literature and has been established as a new branch of that discipline; the other has developed from the French sociological and the British anthropological schools, which consider of folk tradition--to which the …

The Effect Of A Past History Of Reinforcement On Signal Detection, Jo Ann Weaver Jan 1975

The Effect Of A Past History Of Reinforcement On Signal Detection, Jo Ann Weaver

Honors Theses

Previous research indicated that a past history of reinforcement affects perception, but conflicting data were found concerning the effect of punishment. These experiments were testing the theory of signal detection, which holds that a past history of reinforcement when linked with a signal makes perception of that signal more likely in the future. Eighty eight students from introductory psychology classes at the University of Richmond participated. Subjects looked at inkblots and made responses on a human operant apparatus. In Experiment 2 an analysis of variance revealed a significant difference in the perception of human forms in ambiguous inkblots after a …

Psycholinguistics & Linguistics: The How And Why Of Language, Belinda Kelly Dec 1974

Psycholinguistics & Linguistics: The How And Why Of Language, Belinda Kelly

Honors Theses

Communication has proved to be an essential facet of life. Language has been with us a long time. Every normal person in the world eventually will talk. By virtue of this fact, every person--civilized or uncivilized--carries through life certain ideas about talking and its relation to thinking. These notions, naive but deeply rooted, tend to be intolerant of opposition because of their firm connection with speech habits that have become unconscious and automatic. We use language to communicate meaning or to send a message from one person to another. But how is this "communication code" developed? Is it acquired? Why …

Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson Dec 1974

Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson

Honors Theses

Along with many other psychologists and sociologists, I am alarmed by the rapid increase in divorce rates. Toffler, in Future Shock, suggests one result of increasing technology might be the break up of the basic family unit. Gone are the days of the average couple meeting and settling down in the same town they have always lived in, surrounded by a secure and stable milieu. No longer are most women satisfied to take on the role of housewife, accepting their main responsibility as cleaning, cooking, and clothing their families. A marriage in our increasingly changing society is made up of …

Power, Elitism, And Lawyers: An Examination Of The Richmond Legal Establishment And Its Impact On The Making Of Social And Economic Policy-Making Within The Commonwealth Of Virginia., Stephen C. St. John

Honors Theses

Within the annals of American academia, much time and effort has been expended in the attempt to answer the crucial question of who wields power within the community and more specifically inside the realm of governmental policy-making. This pursuit has taken many forms and focuses throughout the years, as the spotlight of community power inquiries have shifted from one group of societal actors to another. Such focuses however have quite frequently neglected to give proper consideration to the immensely important roles played in the community and governmental power structure by those individuals who collectively form the legal profession. Of all …

Arkansas Politics And The Code Duello, Vincent C. Henderson Ii Jan 1974

Arkansas Politics And The Code Duello, Vincent C. Henderson Ii

Honors Theses

Many methods have been found by which two men may solve a dispute between them. The methods can be broadly divided as either violent or nonviolent. Among the violent methods, dueling was considered in the nineteenth century in Arkansas as a proper means of solving disputes concerning politics, honor, and family, as well as trivial matters.

Dueling was not common in Arkansas alone. People practiced it in many states. By 1819 dueling had become a Southern institution. As an institution, dueling had certain rules and regulations. Several books were published on the subject. Among these were An Essay on the …

Hirabayashi And Korematsu: The Stone Court's Double-Edged Sword, Thomas Seilheimer Jan 1974

Hirabayashi And Korematsu: The Stone Court's Double-Edged Sword, Thomas Seilheimer

Honors Theses

Law, as a fixed or immutable device for civilized social intercourse, is a myth. All too often the law has been construed in capital letters, and little has it been realized or remembered that the law has been written by people and interpreted by people. Rather than the rigidity and permanence of steel and stone, the law expounded by the Supreme Court has been more like clay. Case upon case, decision after decision, the law of the Court has been constantly re-molded and re-defined to meet the ever-changing needs of society, and to protect the personal freedoms of American citizens.

Newswriting For Beginners: A Suggested Lesson Plan, Gene Adair Jan 1974

Newswriting For Beginners: A Suggested Lesson Plan, Gene Adair

Honors Theses

This lesson plan accompanies a set of transparencies illustrating various aspects and problems of newswriting. I feel that this type of presentation, with its use of visual aids, will make a greater impression on the student than a straight lecture approach.

The three lessons detailed in this project are concerned strictly with basic newswriting. Hopefully, the student will already have had some introduction to newsgathering before being exposed to this presentation.

The focus of this project is on fundamentals, and little attention is given to the more advanced problems one encounters in writing interview, speech and feature stories.

Included with …

Survey Of The Visitors To Degray Lake, Marsha Ann Ellis

Honors Theses

This Honors Special Studies has been done in order to determine pertinent information concerning the visitors who come to De Gray Lake. The surveys were begun on March 9, 1974, and completed on April 13, 1974, with exactly 100 people having been interviewed. The questions asked on the survey were derived from information sent out from the Arkansas State Park Commission. The areas surveyed included several camping and boat docking areas within 10 to 15 miles driving distance from Arkadelphia. The results of the survey were obtained by coding the information, running it through the key punch, and through the …

A Study Of The Utility And Validity Of Earnings Forecasts, Michael P. Howell Aug 1973

A Study Of The Utility And Validity Of Earnings Forecasts, Michael P. Howell

Honors Theses

According to William J. Casey, the past Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and recently appointed Under Secretary of State and Economic Affairs, forecasting should be the first and most important priority of all areas of management and public accounting. Only large institutional investment corporations have had access to such "useful" information when needed. Consequently, large investors are able to make more objective and intelligent investment decisions. A recent study determined that few investment corporations veritably have access to pertinent internal forecasting models. In fact, when interviewed, many executives claimed that even if they could procure such information, they …

The Socialist Evolvement Of The Cuban Revolution 1948-1960, Ross E. Chapman May 1973

The Socialist Evolvement Of The Cuban Revolution 1948-1960, Ross E. Chapman

Honors Theses

Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba after a surprisingly powerless Batista fled the country during the early morning hours of January 1, 1959. Joyous celebration swept the country as Castro made his triumphant journey across the island, leaving his hideout of two years in the Sierra Maestra for Havana. The revolution had succeeded in over throwing the hated Batista, for whom almost all elements of Cuban society felt disdain. The people were rejoicing at his overthrow* let most had little conception of what was to come. Fidel Castro, outside of being a popular hero, was a little known commodity …

Conflict Theory: Concepts, Techniques, And Stages, Thomas Kramer Apr 1973

Conflict Theory: Concepts, Techniques, And Stages, Thomas Kramer

Honors Theses

The social worker of today is being placed in situations which call for him to devise new tools and strategies of intervention which are relevant to present day problems. It is recognized that many of our current social problems are inherent in some of our institutions and that only by changing these institutions can real results be achieved. Problems arise due to the fact that these institutions often stringently resist change and conventional methods employed by professional practitioners have often only been able to solve or ease individual difficulties or maladustments. There have been a growing number of social workers …

Storytelling Unit, Tanna Murry Jan 1973

Storytelling Unit, Tanna Murry

Honors Theses

Since man learned to communicate with other men, storytelling has been a means for relating information, for teaching a lesson and for entertaining. As an elementary major with certification as a school librarian I will have daily opportunities to use storytelling with children. For this reason I decided to do this project on the different techniques of storytelling. The project gave me a chance to use different techniques to make the beginnings of a story pack I'll have for years and that I'll use year after year.

In this report of the project I will take each story I included …

Experiments In Cultural Food Patterns And Customs, Emma Gail White Jan 1973

Experiments In Cultural Food Patterns And Customs, Emma Gail White

Honors Theses

The circumstances under which one eats are largely determined by the culture. Food habits may have existed for centuries, and such a heritage may account for great conser- vatism in accepting change. These patterns reflect the social organization of the people. including their economy, religion, beliefs about the health properties of certain foods. and attitudes toward various members of the family. The emotional reactions to the consumption of certain foods may be so deeply rooted that effecting acceptance of them is almost impossible. Cultural food patterns exist particularly with- in oountrieso Perhaps nowhere in the world can one find so …

Watergate: Its Implications, Its Dangers, Its Perpetrators, And Its Role In America's Eternal Bliss, James E. Starnes Jan 1973

Watergate: Its Implications, Its Dangers, Its Perpetrators, And Its Role In America's Eternal Bliss, James E. Starnes

Honors Theses

Initially, this study began as one dealing with an extremely large segment of the socio-political spectrum---change in the American system (social, political, economic) with emphasis on the political. It become quite clear to me early in my research that the study was much too broad. to be of any use, and would at most, only occupy my time. I began sifting through the voluminous collection of works on social change for ideas on how to limit my study, but only become more confused.

During the time I normally set aside for my special studies, I began reading the newspaper. It was …

Adopting A Child, Elisabeth Enlow Jan 1973

Adopting A Child, Elisabeth Enlow

Honors Theses

Adoption is the method through which people become parents legally rather than biologically. Yet, the joys of being an adoptive parent are no less than if one had given birth to his own child.

Adoption is serious and for that reason most child care experts feel that the best way to adopt a child is through a licensed child placement agency. The social worker with a licensed agency takes time to assist both the natural and adoptive parents in reaching their decisions. The child's and parent's best interests are considered.

Soviet International Law : Theory And Practice, Rozanne D. Oliver May 1972

Soviet International Law : Theory And Practice, Rozanne D. Oliver

Honors Theses

After World War II, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics became a "Great Power," surpassed in might by only the United States. The foreign policy of the Soviet Union now exerts a tremendous influence on the international scene, making the study of Soviet policies a "must" for the student of international affairs. The question of the role of international law in the foreign relations of the U.S.S.R. is an interesting and important one. Are changes in the international system reflected in Soviet views of international law? Have the Soviet theories had significant impacts on the actions of other states? To …

New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy Apr 1972

New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy

Honors Theses

One third to one half of marriages are destined to end in a divorce court. However, in the de jure system or orders, monogamous marriage is the only accepted form with sexual behavior limited thereto. The nuclear family is the economic and residential unit. The expectation is that the marriage should last for the lifetime of the spouses, although increasingly there are provisions for exceptional cases termed failure. Other popular expectations are that the woman will be the socializing agent and the male will be the economic agent. This thesis explores the changing nature of families and marriage.

An Evaluation Of Roadside Litter, Rex Moreland Terry Jan 1972

An Evaluation Of Roadside Litter, Rex Moreland Terry

Honors Theses

In a society in which issues such as environmental protection, cleaner air and cleaner water are receiving increasing verbosity, the time appears ripe for a factual analysis of a too-little thought of problem connected with these issues--the problem of litter on the nation's highways.

Although only a fraction of total waste, littler constitutes the most visible waste since it is ever-present on our nation's increasingly traveled highways. Society has begun to look more critically at the litter problem. There have been clean-up campaigns, roadside barrels, signs warning the motorist of the impending penalty for littering; but the problem remains. These …
