Cataloging Of Audio-Visual Equipment, Tanna Murry
Cataloging Of Audio-Visual Equipment, Tanna Murry
Honors Theses
For my Honors Special Study, I decided to catalog the audio-visual equipment that belongs to the Educational Department. I feel this project was a benefit not only to me but also to the Department. While I gained some much needed experience in cataloging equipment, the Educational department gained two complete records of its audio-visual equipment--one for the Media Lab and one for the Curriculum Lab. The cards contain the serial numbers of the audio-visual equipment to serve as a means of identification. Also both instructors and students of education will now be able to tell at a glance what equipment …
Hallucinations Induced By Sensory Deprivation: Fact Or Fiction?, Larry M. Latham
Hallucinations Induced By Sensory Deprivation: Fact Or Fiction?, Larry M. Latham
Honors Theses
Ancient mediators, ascetics, and others on religious quests deliberately withdrew from all sensory experience and even transcended awareness of their own body in order to open up the "inner rooms of the house of mind."
Experimenters of the modern era have attempted to analyze the various forms of hallucinations that have occurred under such "mysterious" circumstances. Contemporary sensory deprivation situations have yielded results which correspond very closely to the transcendentalism of the ancient mystics. However, the scientists of today have various means of complex experimentation available. Thus, hallucinations are no longer the mystical experiences of transcendentalists--hallucinations can be explained through …
The Stereotyped Image Of Mental Illness And How It Can Be Eliminated, Larry Latham
The Stereotyped Image Of Mental Illness And How It Can Be Eliminated, Larry Latham
Honors Theses
One out of every ten people in the United States will at some time be hospitalized for a mental illness. Billions of dollars each year are spent on books about personal adjustment. Mental illness is not something that the public can be ignorant about.
This paper is concerned with understanding why the public views mental disorders as it does, and how a more optimistic perception can be attained.
A Comparative Study Of The Truth In Lending Act, Robert R. Riggins
A Comparative Study Of The Truth In Lending Act, Robert R. Riggins
Honors Theses
Less than two generations ago America discovered mass production. Scarcely one generation ago America discovered mass distribution. In the present generation America is discovering mass finance. But since this adage was written, some forty years ago, America has rapidly progressed out of the discovery stage--it is not well into the application stage.
While many people may regard consumer credit as a relatively new concept, such is not the case. It probably began in the United States early in the nineteenth century (a few years after it was initiated in England), but it has only in recent years acquired such a …
The U.S. Policy In Vietnam, As It Relates To The Geneva And S.E.A.T.O. Agreements, Bobby Shepherd
The U.S. Policy In Vietnam, As It Relates To The Geneva And S.E.A.T.O. Agreements, Bobby Shepherd
Honors Theses
Few chapters in American history have been filled with more importance and had more impact upon this nation politically, socially and morally than has the era of active involvement in the land war in Vietnam, during the mid 1960's. The war has taken almost 50,000 American lives, has contributed directly to the political end of one American President and had plunged the United States into an ordeal of examination and internal turmoil rarely seen in U.S. history.
As great as the impact of this war has been, it is remarkable that little is recalled by American citizens or acknowledged by …
The Effects Of Repetitive Stimulation On The Aggressive Behavior Of The Fighting Cock: A Test For Habituation, Howard E. Farris, Thomas W. Cey
The Effects Of Repetitive Stimulation On The Aggressive Behavior Of The Fighting Cock: A Test For Habituation, Howard E. Farris, Thomas W. Cey
Honors Theses
A fighting cock was repeatedly presented with its own mirror image. The rate of aggressive display and attack behavior elicited by the mirror rapidly decreased to zero. Subsequent exposure of the experimental subject to a live target bird was found to be sufficient to reinstate responding to the mirror. However, upon repeated exposure to the mirror image alone aggressive responding quickly decreased again to zero.
A Study Of Personality Differences In Children Related To Strict Or Permissive Parental Discipline, Patricia L. Greene
A Study Of Personality Differences In Children Related To Strict Or Permissive Parental Discipline, Patricia L. Greene
Honors Theses
The aim of this study is to determine how the children of dominating parents differ from those of submissive parents in behavior, personality, and in their mental life and attitudes. In addition a discussion will be made of the adjustment between father and mother as married partners and of the childhood background of the parents.
The study to be reported is based upon actual cases comparing families in which there is strict and rigid control of children with families in which control of children is lax.
The collected information of this research paper follows no one single finding of any …

A Study Of Vegetarianism And Meat Analogs, Paula Herrin Hendr
A Study Of Vegetarianism And Meat Analogs, Paula Herrin Hendr
Honors Theses
Food is the structure of society's structure. It shows the values, customs, and habits of the people. For many years now we have applauded the frozen foods, packaged foods, TV dinners, fast food franchise, preservatives, additives, and anything else that would save time. Our values are slowly changing. In our new culture we have time for growing gardens and things like baking bread. Our eating and cooking has become more of a ceremony. The variety of foods is endless but some people will prefer some foods over others.
A vegetarian is one who does not use meat in his diet …
High School Yearbook Organization: Planning Your Work And Working Your Plan, Becky Barron
High School Yearbook Organization: Planning Your Work And Working Your Plan, Becky Barron
Honors Theses
A high school yearbook is many things to many people. It is a history book of the events of a school year. It is a memory book of all those "exciting" high school days. It is a reference book for matching names with faces. To a high school advisers, however, a yearbook represents a huge, immeasurable task to be drawn up, developed, and completed in a period of nine months. On the adviser's shoulder resets its success--and falls its failure. Though the staff of the book is outwardly on its own, the adviser must be there throughout every phase of …

The purpose of this endeavor is to determine whether or not significant differences can be found between the backgrounds and opinions of ministerial students and non-ministerial students who attend Ouachita University.
First of all, a survey was devised that would attempt to attain information concerning the backgrounds (family and church) and opinions of the two groups. A copy of the questionnaire …
The Causes Of Student Unrest, Sandra Lee Sawyer
The Causes Of Student Unrest, Sandra Lee Sawyer
Honors Theses
Protest is not a new invention of the 1960's. Protest has always been the normal apparatus to initiate change in human societies. College students can no longer be taken for granted. Though the great majority of them remain largely content, conservative, and apathetic, a determined minority of restless ones have forces other to examine and sometimes to change institutions, rules, and values that were once considered inviolate.
The United Nations: Its Successes, Failures, And Future, John Finley
The United Nations: Its Successes, Failures, And Future, John Finley
Honors Theses
Organization for peace, avoidance of war, freedom from invasion, universal brotherhood of all nations and peoples--these have been the hopes and dreams of the peoples of the world for centuries. But not until the 20th century have these goals been both far away and yet so near. This century has witnessed the most horrible wars of mankind's history and the greatest advances in the organization for universal peace. But which has gathered the most support? Does the world have protection from another major war? Perhaps, an understanding can be obtained through the following examination of the successes, failures, and future …
The Electoral College: Retention, Reform, Or Abolition?, Gary E. Brown
The Electoral College: Retention, Reform, Or Abolition?, Gary E. Brown
Honors Theses
Several Presidential elections during our history have shown that the electoral college machine is a crude invention that has never been "well-oiled" and two elections within the last decade are vivid proof of this problem.
A Comparative Study Of The Intelligence Quotient Of The Negro, Patricia L. Greene
A Comparative Study Of The Intelligence Quotient Of The Negro, Patricia L. Greene
Honors Theses
Extending beyond health, white supremacists maintain that Negroes are innately less intelligent than Caucasians. In a statement remarkably comparable to those made two centuries ago by advocates of the theory of American degeneration, one modern-day racist phrases the claim in these words:
Any man with two eyes in his head can observe a Negro settlement in the Congo, can study the pure-blood African in his native habitat as he exists when left on his own resources, can compare this settlement with London or Paris, and can draw hos own conclusions regarding relative levels of character and intelligence.... Finally, he can …

Dreams: A Guide To The Subconscious Of Man, Sharon Coe
Dreams: A Guide To The Subconscious Of Man, Sharon Coe
Honors Theses
The first thing one learns when trying to get information on sleep, dreams, and the interpretation of dreams is that very little is known about any of these subjects. The study of dreams is a relatively new field--only about fifteen years old, although dream interpretation has been studied in many ancient civilizations. The story is told in the Bible (Genesis 4) of the symbolic dreams that Pharaoh had and Joseph's interpretation of it.

The Effect Of Environment On The Mentally Retarded Child, Patricia L. Greene
The Effect Of Environment On The Mentally Retarded Child, Patricia L. Greene
Honors Theses
Mental retardation is one of the most challenging problems of childhood. It affects not only the child but also parents, siblings, and the community. The retarded child needs the help of the physician, the psychologist, the social worker, the teacher, and even the lawmakers.
The question of mental retardation, fortunately, is now being brought into the open. The child who is mentally retarded is no longer kept behind closed windows and locked doors. Mental retardation, formerly, looked upon as a stigma, is now considered a disease, like tuberculosis, diabetes, and heart trouble.
Mental retardation had been designated by various terms …
A Bibliography For A Boys' Training School, Wanda Faye Williams
A Bibliography For A Boys' Training School, Wanda Faye Williams
Honors Theses
My special studies for the honors program mainly consisted of compiling a bibliography for a boys' training school. However, I did research involving the nature of training schools. Also, I spoke with Miss Shinn, who is the director of institutional libraries in Arkansas. She informed me that the training schools' libraries are to be approved under the same standards as school libraries. The services extended beyond books as half of this year's budget was spent on audio-visual equipment.
According to ALA school media standards, a small library should consist of at least 6000 volumes. My bibliography is not that extensive, …
Recreation For The Handicapped, Susan Ann Todd
Recreation For The Handicapped, Susan Ann Todd
Honors Theses
Recreation has become an important resource in the treatment of the mentally and physically handicapped. People with serious handicaps can be trained to lead happy, normal, productive lives. Such training is one of the greatest triumphs of modern medicine and education.
Progress in the use of music and drama, including organization of groups in radio drama, was made in veterans' hospitals, especially during and after World War II. With the development of occupational therapy, even bedridden patients found many activities possible, including both work and play. Those in wheel chairs have become proficient in various games. The obvious need for …
Psychological Aspects Of Clothing, Marty Mcdonald
Psychological Aspects Of Clothing, Marty Mcdonald
Honors Theses
This research was conducted with no established set of hypotheses as guidelines. It was done to point out certain attitudes about clothing and inadvertently, how consciously or unconsciously, ideas are formed about dress.
A questionnaire was prepared for the study. It required the subject to give his age, sex, and classification, but no name. The questions were designed to include some specific topics on female dress and some on male dress, with additional topics related to neither sex expressly. These questions were given to forty subjects, twenty males and twenty females.

A Study Of The Origins Of Behavior Problems, Kathryn Ann Shaddox
A Study Of The Origins Of Behavior Problems, Kathryn Ann Shaddox
Honors Theses
In special studies this semester I have simply began the study of adult problems arising from childhood. To do this I read several books and an occasional periodical. The following paper tends to be an overview tying together three of these books. I only made a few references to the other three mentioned in the bibliography. The content for this paper in mainly a listing of the many aspects of personality development. The first section deals generally with the developmental tasks from infancy to adulthood. The second continues with the behavior problems of children who have failed to succeed in …

On The Season, Marty Mcdonald
On The Season, Marty Mcdonald
Honors Theses
In a recent report to a subcommittee of the Committee on Labor and Public Welfare of the United States Senate, Father John A. Wagner made an apt comparison of Texas migrant workers and "tumble weeds that roll helter-skelter,... in search of that constantly eluding hope that they will have a chance to make enough to keep their families alive." Much of the migrant farm labor in the United States make their winter quarters in sunny Florida. By May they are moving out to follow crops and get "on the season." They travel to South Carolina, and on up to New …
The Supreme Court As The Arbiter Of Economic Affairs Through Interpretation Of The Commerce Clause From 1789 Through 1937, Cloene Biggs
The Supreme Court As The Arbiter Of Economic Affairs Through Interpretation Of The Commerce Clause From 1789 Through 1937, Cloene Biggs
Honors Theses
Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress did not have the power to regulate interstate and foreign commerce. As a result, each state attempted to protect local business at the expense of the other states through the enforcing of trade barriers. Removal of these restrictions on commercial relations imposed by the "sovereign" states became one of the "moving purposes" which brought about the Constitutional Convention in 1787. There seems to be no doubt that the commerce clause was inserted in the Constitution to prevent the states from interfering with the freedom of commercial intercourse.
The constitutional meaning of the commerce …
The Truman Election: Was 1968 A Repeat?, Cloene Biggs
The Truman Election: Was 1968 A Repeat?, Cloene Biggs
Honors Theses
As election day in 1948 drew nearer, political pollsters, pros and amateurs united in predicting victory for Thomas E. Dewey. Only underdog candidate President Truman and, as it turned out, the American electorate disagreed with this consensus.
At the end of 1947 Truman was considered certain for renomination by his party, and the Gallup Poll showed that he would easily defeat either of the two leading Republicans--Governor Dewey and Senator Taft. A get-tough policy with Russia had pushed up his popularity--the Marshall Plan, his advocacy of government action to curb high prices, his confrontation with labor leader John L. Lewis …
