According to the National Policy of Education (1998), the goals of tertiary education are …

Understanding The Expectations Of Pakistani Libraries Users: A Libqual Study, Shafiq Ur Rehman

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

The conventional services and traditional role of university libraries is changed due to multiple sources of information, high demand of users, and application of information technology, competition among service sectors and high student enrolments. The university libraries are also facing different challenges such as advances in information technology, rising cost of material, increased accessibility of research materials via the Web and tentative budget allocations.

Influence Of Motivation On Turnover Of Library Personnel In Some Public Universities In South West Nigeria, Oyetola Solomon Olusegun

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

A characteristic of organisations in the 21st century is the continuous and rapid pace of change. Volatile free market economic environments, rapidly changing technologies, global competition, workforce diversity, and new organisational structures are some of the challenges an organisation faces. Organisations may differ in the priority they attach to the human resource component, in their efforts toward achieving high productivity and competitive advantage, yet they all recognize the value of a qualified, motivated, stable, and responsive team of employees (Huselid, 1995).

Retention and productivity levels of the existing workforce are an essential concern in human resource management. Employee …

The extensive investigations and the abundance of literature being published and contributed to immense escalation of cost for the libraries, as the acquisition of published literature became an increasingly difficult task. To maintain a reasonable collection of periodicals, at least in broad fields, it is necessary for the librarians to know the characteristics of subject literature used by the users. Information is not only increasing exponentiality but the growth rates also differ from one discipline …

Patients' Information Needs In Affiliated Hospitals Of Tehran University Of Medical Sciences, Moosa Majidi, Hodeiseh Mahdavi, Hasan Siamian

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Information seeking theories often refer to the concept of information needs, a presumed cognitive state wherein an individual's need state triggers the search behavior characteristic of information seeking in a given context. With the growth of electronic information and the increasing availability of health information, the idea of the 'informed patient' has become prominent. On the one hand, this has resulted in concerns about associated changes in the doctor-patient relationship and health outcomes [1]; on the other, it has given rise to visions of timely, high quality, accessible, understandable, reliable, and relevant information for patients and care-providers [2] Certainly, …

Guiding The Library Search By The English Teacher, David C. Kupfer

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

There is currently little professional literature for high school English teachers teaching their own students how to use an online catalog. Based on my conversations with library staff, scholarly research into the subject, and my own experience, most "information literacy" articles are aimed at the trained librarian, the information specialist. For example, in the academic database Library Literature and Info Science Full Text, one finds that there are only 11 articles, using the key words "teaching" and "high school" and "English." Other subject/keyword combinations produce little else relevant to English teacher search ability, and one even finds …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Libraries around the world have experienced a sudden cut in budget over the years. However, costs of journals subscription have continued to rise without corresponding increases in libraries budgets. Each year, Nigerian libraries can only afford to subscribe to a very few low cost journals.

In short, Oren (2008) noted that the current system of scholarly publishing is unsustainable, as no library could be able to keep up with the annual price increases. However, Oren (2008) stated that the seeming out of control system of journals costs, has laid the foundation for the open access movement.

The publication of …

How did we get into this anyway? "Defining" postmodernism

Q: What do you get when you cross a postmodernist with a Mafia boss?

A: Someone who will make you an offer that no one can understand!

(Cook, 2001(b), p. 18)

This is the attempt to define something which by its very nature avoids definition. Before we can speak of the influence postmodernism is having on library and information areas, we have to at least make the attempt to understand what postmodernism is. Several of these "definitions" are what postmodernism is not while others focus on what postmodernism seeks to be. …
