Any meaningful design of information system for a user group must take into account the need to establish the sources of information and channels/means to access. This paper reports on the study instituted to determine the sources of legal information and means used to access legal information by Lawyers in Uganda and propose strategic interventions. The study used survey research design with structured questionnaire to elicit the required data. User Perception Of Library And Information Services In Agricultural Science Universities In South India: An Evaluative Study, B. U. Kannappanavar, H.M. Chidananda Swamy

The paper explores library and information services in agricultural science university libraries in south India. A structured questionnaire collected user information on user perceptions. The University of Agricultural Sciences Library, Bangalore and the University of Agricultural Sciences Library, Dharwad ranked first and second in user satisfaction. A majority of the post graduate students (77.25%) and research scholars (72.04%) reported that their recommendation are not considered in procuring the information resources, but most faculty (78.12%) state that their recommendation are taken into consideration. A majority of users found the existing print collection adequate, but that electronic sources are inadequate.

The Post-UME screening examination conducted by the University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti (TUNEDIK), particularly in essay writing, exposed inadequacies in most of the candidates. A total of 500 candidates were randomly selected for this study from five departments of the three foundation faculties of education, science and information technology and arts, social and management sciences. 200 out of the 500 candidates (40%) scored 200 marks and above in JAMB, 125 candidates (25%) scored 190-199, also 125 candidates (25%) again scored 180-189 and 50 candidates (10%) scored 170-179 in JAMB. The Use Of Impact Factor In The Appraisal Of Academic Librarians In Nigeria, Michael Onuchukwu Okoye

This study explores the degree to which academic librarians in Nigeria are committed to accepting the use of impact factor for assessing their academic performance. Fifty copies of a questionnaire were distributed and 41 returned. Descriptive statistics using means and percentages were used to generate data. A majority of the respondents disagreed that impact factor had wider acceptance than any alternative. More than half did not agree that many Nigerian scholars are reluctant to publish in international journals. The ability to read is one determiner of students' success or failure. The skill acquired in reading can promote the acquisition of language skills like listening, speaking, and writing. Some primary school pupils find it difficult to read and understand despite the fact that reading is indispensable. A questionnaire was administered to teachers of English language in five primary schools in the Ibadan northeast local government of Oyo state. The results show strong views on the role of teachers, parents, and government in the important matter of reading comprehension and literacy among primary school pupils.

This study investigates the attitudes of staff users toward the payment of overdue fines in Nigerian Polytechnic libraries. A survey was applied to staff users of the libraries of the Delta State Polytechnic Oghara-Otefe, and Delta State Polytechnic. A total of 87 staff participated in the study. A questionnaire and oral interview were used in data collection. Findings reveal that staff users rarely pay overdue fines and would like the system discontinued. A survey of staff and students at Delta State University, Abraka showed that nearly all staff and students have a personal mobile phone, but that GSM technology has not been implemented in the library. Staff and students see potential for GSM use in library services, although there are problams with infrastructure, cost, and service interruption. Recommendations are made for improving the situation and implementing GSM.

This paper examines ICT applications in Nigerian secondary schools. It reveals that ICTs should be adopted in Nigerian schools to improve the educational system and help the students receive a solid education, enabling them to live successfully. Though some efforts have been made to ensure the integration of ICTs in the system, the level of ICT adoption and use is low, due to poor policy/project implementation strategies, and limited/poor information infrastructure. Recommendations for improvement of ICT applications are set forth.

The study examines insurance coverage of library materials in Nigerian universities. The size of the collection, disasters experienced in the library, safety measures, and contingency plans were examined. The study found that more than 80 percent of the libraries used for the study had no insurance coverage. A larger percentage of the respondents did not have a written security policy. The study recommends comprehensive insurance coverage for university libraries.

It focuses on the perceptions of PU alumni about the MLIS curricula. t investigates their satisfaction with curriculum, learning, faculty, instructional methods, instructional facilities, etc., through a questionnaire survey. This study explores whether the student work study programme of Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Nigeria programme has lived up to the purpose of its establishment. Existing circulation statistical records and interview were used to elicit information. The results of the appraisal reveal that there are challenges and prospects; and that the programme has complemented staff shortages, assisted indigent students, and contributed to academic excellence of the participating students. It is therefore recommended that more funds should be allocated to the programme and more students should be employed.

The paper surveys the use of electronic journals by academics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. It considers the attitude, purpose, frequency of use, and problems encountered. The data represent responses from two hundred and forty-five academic staff. The results reveal a high percentage of use for literature search and professional development. Use is affected by problems associated with basic infrastructures prevalent in the developing countries. Students' academic performance is influenced by social factors. These factors include romantic relationships, student cults, membership in clubs and organizations, and sports. Sampling via mid-point square approach was used to compare social variables with the students' CGPA. Both the f-test at 0.05 level of significance and regression indicate that romantic relationships and student cults have a significant effect on academic performance, while club or organization activity and excessive sporting is not significant.

The study investigates the provision and use of legal information among civil rights groups in oil producing communities of Nigeria. The survey research design was employed for this study. Data was gathered by questionnaire from 127 active civil rights group members spread across ten oil producing communities in three major oil producing states of Nigeria – Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers. Private university students are a unique population in Nigeria. The organization and administration of these institutions, the mode of admission, and facilities in place account for the uniqueness of their students compared with their counterparts in government institutions. Students in private institutions are provided with facilities that will enhance their academic performance, which includes hostel accommodation, sporting activities, a well-equipped library, information and communication technology (Internet access), and others. Payments for such facilities are always included in tuition fees. It is the aim of this research to determine the level of accessibility and use of Internet services in these universities.

The collection is the library's most valuable asset and it needs to be protected from security breaches. Collection security is an important issue for academic libraries.This study explores the major collection security issues related to library collections in Malaysian university libraries. The study reveals the measures adopted by the Malaysian libraries to ensure effective collections security governance. The findings indicate that main breaches of collection security are book theft, damage, mutilation, or defacement; books attacked by insects or worms; and non-return of borrowed materials. Demographic Variables And Self-Efficacy As Factors Influencing Career Commitment Of Librarians In Federal University Libraries In Nigeria, Gboyega Adio, S.O. Popoola

This research examines the influence demographic variables and self-efficacy have on career commitment of librarians in federal university libraries in Nigeria. The standardized self-efficacy scale developed by Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1993) and revalidated in 2007 with a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was used for data collection. The outcome of the research showed that demographic variables and self-efficacy had significant influence on career commitment of librarians working in federal university libraries in Nigeria (F (9; 352) = 11.058, p < 0.05). The study revealed that demographic variables and self-efficacy accounted for 20% (adj R 2 = 0.2000) in variability of career commitment of the respondents.

The study explores student perceptions of the academic librarian as teachers. A questionnaire was distributed to 500 students at two City University of New York colleges. Convenience and snowball sampling were employed to reach as many respondents as possible. Questionnaires were administered following a library instruction class and in the campus cafeteria. Contrary to results from previous studies, many respondents consider librarians to be teachers.
