Customizing And Using A Popular Online Information Literacy Tutorial: One Library’S Experience, Robert Flatley, William Jefferson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

To teach information literacy, many colleges and universities use a version of TILT (the Texas Information Tutorial) or Searchpath, a modification of TILT by Western Michigan University. This paper describes our experience customizing Searchpath for Kutztown University’s Rohrbach Library, including the impetus behind the project, the process of customizing Searchpath, the project pilot, collaborative efforts, and challenges encountered. The authors also discuss the decision to select Searchpath rather than TILT, how Kutztown’s version of tutorial is currently being used, and future plans for the product, along with suggestions to those considering Searchpath for their libraries.

Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag Apr 2006

Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information literacy is embedded within the traditional disciplinary model of knowledge production wherein the role of the scholar/expert and the process of peer-review are emphasized. Exclusive reference to this model is inadequate in informing the production of knowledge outside of formal academic setting and consequently inadequate in supporting the objectives of liberal learning. Shapiro and Hughes' concept of information literacy as a liberal art provides a useful framework for discussion on alternative models of knowledge production.

On Not Revising The Ala Code Of Ethics: An Alternate Proposal, John Buschman Apr 2006

On Not Revising The Ala Code Of Ethics: An Alternate Proposal, John Buschman

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking a revision of its code of ethics. The author propo ses and discusses three reasons not to revise the code. The reasons are that there is already a set of interlocking policies on ethics and related issues; that ALA leadership has taken the most conservative possible approach to ethics policy - and especially the connection between librarians' professional responsibilities and rights; and that when policies are amended, they are not always improved, and those on the books are often ignored. The author considers and discusses likely objections to his proposal.

Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger Oct 2005

Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Philosophically, materialists and idealists understand the world differently. In materialist theory information directly represents the natural world, whereas idealism understands it to be the very structure of thought. Some of the problems arising between information theory and the actual practice of librarianship are due to mixing concepts from incompatible theories. The concept of information favored by materialist theories is not interchangeable with the concepts preferred by idealists and critical theorists. Materialism overemphasizes the empirical features of information, while giving short shrift to the possibility that information can be both factual and evaluative. Consequently, this leads to theories of information which …

Look Out! The Biggest Library Problem, Scott Rummler

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries may lose control of the support, operation, and direction of their institutions because of the popularization of information and accompanying political wrangling. To a large extent, it will be their activism that will determine their viability going forward. If they fail to deal with this situation they may lose control of their destinies. Will we continue to expand and prosper? Case studies.

Online Tutorials: Tips From The Literature, Cecile Bianco

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Online tutorials are an important addition to traditional teaching. Online tutorials can be an effective means of education for graduate students. This paper assembles fourteen best practices for constructing online tutorials.

Empowering The Intentional Learner: A Critical Theory For Information Literacy Instruction, John J. Doherty, Kevin Ketchner Oct 2005

Empowering The Intentional Learner: A Critical Theory For Information Literacy Instruction, John J. Doherty, Kevin Ketchner

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The empowered intentional learner is a starting point towards a grounded theory in information literacy instruction. The authors engage this theory in a critical dialogue with instructional practice, in this instance a for-credit college freshman class built around information literacy concepts. Only through such reflection, where theory informs practice and practice informs theory, is it possible to develop a grounded theory where a less privileged role for the instruction librarian takes a back seat role to the control students should have over their own learning.

Do You Really Want To Be A Forum?, Leonard Hitchcock Oct 2005

Do You Really Want To Be A Forum?, Leonard Hitchcock

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article examines what a public forum is, and whether or not a library can legitimately claim to be one. Beginning with an imaginary visit to a rather odd public park, and a brief review of the development of the legal doctrine of the public forum, an attempt is made to establish that the library 1) falls far short of being a genuine public forum, 2) is actually ambivalent about being a forum at all, and 3) could, if it really wanted to, become much more of a forum by making a very simple change in its online catalog.

The History Of Academic Libraries In The United States: A Review Of The Literature, Sharon Gray Weiner

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Summary

The literature on the history of academic libraries was explored for three important periods in the evolution of higher education in the United States. Libraries in the Colonial period were minimal and peripheral to the college function and mission. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, academic libraries developed a formal structure and became more integral to the mission of the university, serving students and faculty in supporting more diversified curricula and research. These trends blossomed following World War II when increases in funding allowed libraries to acquire larger collections and become important resources in research and teaching Changes …
