Bridging The Gap: Intercultural Friendship Between Chinese And Americans, Zhuo Feng Li
Bridging The Gap: Intercultural Friendship Between Chinese And Americans, Zhuo Feng Li
Masters Theses
This research aims to explore Chinese and American students' intercultural friendship experiences on a U.S. campus. Twenty-five Chinese international students and twenty-five U.S. nationals participated in the study. Q-methodology was adopted in this research. Three of Hosftede's cultural dimensions (low/high power distance, individualism/collective, and masculinity/femininity) and Hall's concept of low/high context culture were used as a theoretical framework for this study. First, qualities that Chinese and Americans consider important in their friendships in each of their own culture were identified. Then this study found out that long-established expectations and understanding of friendship of both Chinese and Americans were challenged while …
Locating Human Rights In Post-Genocide Reconstruction: Reconnecting The Global, National And Local, Elizabeth Warrick Guyol-Meinrath
Locating Human Rights In Post-Genocide Reconstruction: Reconnecting The Global, National And Local, Elizabeth Warrick Guyol-Meinrath
Masters Theses
Despite the ever-expanding criticism of the way the international community conducts its aid missions, it remains clear that humanitarian intervention is necessary for the successful rebuilding of post-genocide nations. As such, the interactions of the international aid community with the national governments and local communities of Cambodia, Guatemala and Rwanda are of particular importance to this thesis. By analyzing these relationships and their resulting policies, it becomes clear that peace cannot last if the survivors are unable to relate to the justice and reconciliation measures implemented. Local cultural norms and traditions, as well as input from survivors, must be the …
Paths To Citizenship: A Comparative Study Of Japan, Germany And Sweden, Marisha L. Lecea
Paths To Citizenship: A Comparative Study Of Japan, Germany And Sweden, Marisha L. Lecea
Masters Theses
This paper examines citizenship policy in Japan, Germany and Sweden in an attempt to explain why some rich, democratic nations have high rates of naturalization and non-restrictive paths to citizenship, while others have negligible rates of naturalization and very restrictive policies. Japan has a very restrictive policy while Sweden has a very open policy. Germany is a mid-level case that has moved from more restrictive to less restrictive over the last several years. In this paper I look at the explanatory potential of internal, institutional, and external variables. I use data from the W orId Values Survey to compare domestic …
Economic Impacts Of Production, Storage, Transport, And Conversion Of Switchgrass For Cellulosic Ethanol In Tennessee, Adam David Fulton
Economic Impacts Of Production, Storage, Transport, And Conversion Of Switchgrass For Cellulosic Ethanol In Tennessee, Adam David Fulton
Masters Theses
The goal of this study is to evaluate the introduction of cellulosic ethanol conversion plants using switchgrass as the feedstock and how it impacts the economies of two Tennessee regions. Switchgrass feedstock production, storage, and transportation costs are estimated for one plant in West Tennessee and one plant in East Tennessee. In each region, the location for a cellulosic ethanol conversion plant and the acreage required to meet a 61.8 million-gallon/year capacity are specified. The costs associated with switchgrass production and cellulosic ethanol conversion are then entered into IMPLAN to estimate the economic impacts of one cellulosic ethanol plant in …
Contextual Influences On Associations Between Impulsivity And Risk-Taking And Child Delinquency, Michael L. Vitulano
Contextual Influences On Associations Between Impulsivity And Risk-Taking And Child Delinquency, Michael L. Vitulano
Masters Theses
Previous literature has shown that risk factors for delinquency include individual characteristics of impulsivity and risk-taking as well as contextual influences such as neighborhoods, parenting and engagement in physical activity (e.g., exercise, sports). Theory suggests that individual characteristics interact with contextual factors to influence child development, however evidence is limited. The current study examined the interaction between these individual and contextual risks to influence childhood delinquency in a community sample of 89 children ranging from 9 to 12 years of age (M = 10.4, SD = 1.1). Questionnaire measures showed that both caregiver report of impulsivity and self-reported risk-taking were …
Information Privacy: A Quantitative Study Of Citizen Awareness, Concern And Information Seeking Behavior Related To The Use Of The Social Security Number As A Personal Identifier, Rhonda Marisa Clossum
Information Privacy: A Quantitative Study Of Citizen Awareness, Concern And Information Seeking Behavior Related To The Use Of The Social Security Number As A Personal Identifier, Rhonda Marisa Clossum
Masters Theses
Information technology has transformed the manner in which personal identifying information is collected, stored and shared in government agencies and private businesses. The social security number has become the de facto identifier for individuals due to its notable qualities: a nine-digit number assigned to one person by the United States government. As individuals are increasingly asked to disclose personal information, the question arises: How does the lack of awareness of social security number laws contribute to the loss of privacy, loss of control of personal information and the threat of identity theft? This study examines awareness levels of social security …
Dating Violence Victimization And Alcohol Problems: An Examination Of Social Support’S Stress-Buffering Hypothesis, Ryan Christopher Shorey
Dating Violence Victimization And Alcohol Problems: An Examination Of Social Support’S Stress-Buffering Hypothesis, Ryan Christopher Shorey
Masters Theses
Recent evidence suggests that victims of dating violence consume alcohol at greater rates than their non-victimized peers, placing them at risk for the negative consequences produced by alcohol use. Thus, research is needed that examines factors that protect victims from consuming alcohol. Toward this end, the present study sought to examine if perceived and enacted support served as stress-buffering variables of the relationship between dating violence victimization and alcohol problems among a sample of currently dating college students. Partial support was found for the stress-buffering effect of perceived support, but findings did not support enacted support as a traditional stress-buffering …
Perceptions Of Digital Libraries With Indigenous Knowledge: An Exploratory Study, Debra Lynn Capponi
Perceptions Of Digital Libraries With Indigenous Knowledge: An Exploratory Study, Debra Lynn Capponi
Masters Theses
Interest in indigenous knowledge (IK) research has grown since the 1980s, and more recently the topic has drawn attention in information sciences research. At the same time, the evolution of electronic information and communication technologies (ICTs), most notably development of the Internet, has profoundly influenced information sciences research. This study explores perceptions of community members involved in the creation, development, and use of digital libraries with indigenous knowledge materials. Research methods used in data collection include a quantitative survey distributed to community members involved in the creation, development, and use of digital libraries with indigenous knowledge materials and qualitative analysis …
Maladaptive Schemas And Depression Severity: Support For Incremental Validity When Controlling For Cognitive Correlates Of Depression, Lindsey K. Colman
Maladaptive Schemas And Depression Severity: Support For Incremental Validity When Controlling For Cognitive Correlates Of Depression, Lindsey K. Colman
Masters Theses
Limited research has explored relationships between specific Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) and depression, with equivocal findings. This study examined the incremental validity of EMS domains in accounting for depression severity among college undergraduates (N = 82) after controlling for gender, cognitive vulnerability, rumination, experiential avoidance, social problem-solving ability, and trait anxiety. Based on the Beck Depression Inventory—II (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996), self-reported depression among students ranged from 0-47 (no depression to severely depressed). Based on hierarchical regression analyses, gender, rumination, and EMS Domains I (Disconnection and Rejection) and II (Impaired Autonomy and Performance) significantly predicted self-reported depression severity, with …
Fire History From Dendrochronological Analyses At Two Sites Near Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, U.S.A., Ian C. Feathers
Fire History From Dendrochronological Analyses At Two Sites Near Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, U.S.A., Ian C. Feathers
Masters Theses
Fire, logging, livestock grazing, and insect outbreaks are disturbances that have significantly influenced both the historic and present fire regimes. The composition and structure of vegetation communities within Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) have likely changed in response to these disturbances. Two study sites (CRX, the near site, and CRT, the far site) were chosen along the Cooper Road Trail based on topographic separation, presence of mixed oak-pine communities, presence of fire-scarred yellow pine trees, and GSMNP land acquisition records. To quantify and evaluate fire regimes, individual fire histories were developed for each site from fire-scarred yellow pine trees, …
Regulating The Global Politico-Economic Order: The Functioning Of The Development Assistance Provision Regime, Justin James Gann
Regulating The Global Politico-Economic Order: The Functioning Of The Development Assistance Provision Regime, Justin James Gann
Masters Theses
This thesis is about the provisioning of development assistance, as a major component of foreign aid. Conventional approaches to the subject have tended to focus on the determinate interactions of discrete agents as the principle units of analysis. This necessarily obscures the functional role development assistance fulfills in relation to the global politico economic order, however. This study, by contrast, properly situates individual programs of development assistance as belonging to a much larger historical pattern, or system of coordinated politico-economic behavior. The objective, therefore, is to apprehend the systematic and functional interrelations existing (i) among the various agents engaged in …
Change In The Textile Mill Villages Of South Carolina's Upstate During The Modern South Era, Claire E. Jamieson
Change In The Textile Mill Villages Of South Carolina's Upstate During The Modern South Era, Claire E. Jamieson
Masters Theses
While the textile mill and the textile mill village were once prominent features of the landscape of the American South, textile mills are rapidly falling into disuse. Because the mill village housing stocks were sold by owners of the mills to their employees in the 1950s and 1960s, the fate of the mill villages was, in part, divorced from the fate of the textile industry. This thesis demonstrates that mill villages are not abandoned after plant closures and explains why residents remain. This is achieved through a history of South Carolina’s mill villages, a quantitative analysis of Spartanburg County, South …
Enterprise Users And Web Search Behavior, April Ann Lewis
Enterprise Users And Web Search Behavior, April Ann Lewis
Masters Theses
This thesis describes analysis of user web query behavior associated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Enterprise Search System (Hereafter, ORNL Intranet). The ORNL Intranet provides users a means to search all kinds of data stores for relevant business and research information using a single query. The Global Intranet Trends for 2010 Report suggests the biggest current obstacle for corporate intranets is “findability and Siloed content”. Intranets differ from internets in the way they create, control, and share content which can make it often difficult and sometimes impossible for users to find information. Stenmark (2006) first noted studies of corporate …
The Risk Of Responding To Acquaintance Sexual Assault: How Perceived Social Costs Affect Risk Appraisals And Behavioral Responses In College Women, Alison Megan Nathanson
The Risk Of Responding To Acquaintance Sexual Assault: How Perceived Social Costs Affect Risk Appraisals And Behavioral Responses In College Women, Alison Megan Nathanson
Masters Theses
Evidence suggests that female victims of sexual abuse are revictimized more often than non-victimized females, placing them at risk for the negative consequences, including increased psychopathology, medical issues and interpersonal difficulties. Research is needed to protect childhood sexual abuse survivors from the risk of further sexual assault. The present study examines if victim status and perception of social costs inhibit heterosexual females’ perception of risk and behavioral response. Results indicate that victim status affects the perception of risk and that sexually abused women in a high social cost condition use less assertive behavioral responses. Implications of these findings for sexual …
Structure And Possible Function Of Vocalizations Of Captive Red-Legged Seriemas (Cariama Cristata), Ami Elizabeth Padget
Structure And Possible Function Of Vocalizations Of Captive Red-Legged Seriemas (Cariama Cristata), Ami Elizabeth Padget
Masters Theses
Very little is known about red-legged seriema (Cariama cristata) vocalizations and behavior. The focus of my research was to analyze the structure of red-legged seriema primary calls and to begin to test hypotheses related to their function. Captive red-legged seriema behavior, both vocal and non-vocal, was recorded at 7 institutions located in the United States from May 2007 through November 2008. To test whether calls serve a predator alarm function, seriemas were presented with a large stuffed dog, representing a predator stimulus, and 2 control stimuli, a large, stuffed penguin and a large, flowering potted plant. Baseline recordings with no …
Consumers' Willingness To Pay For Energy Labels On Household Appliances, David O. Ward
Consumers' Willingness To Pay For Energy Labels On Household Appliances, David O. Ward
Masters Theses
Voluntary environmental labeling or certification programs provide information about the environmental characteristics of one or more aspects of a product’s life cycle to consumers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy were among the first governmental agencies in the world to adopt environmental information programs. This study examines two U.S. programs – Energy Star, an energy efficiency labeling program, and Green Power Partnership (GPP), a green energy purchasing program, and estimates how much consumers are willing to pay for refrigerators that have been awarded these labels and what factors motivate that willingness to pay. The data were obtained …
Is Sex Important To Marital Satisfaction Or Is Marital Satisfaction Important To Sex? Top-Down And Bottom-Up Processing In The Bedroom., Carolyn Anne Wenner
Is Sex Important To Marital Satisfaction Or Is Marital Satisfaction Important To Sex? Top-Down And Bottom-Up Processing In The Bedroom., Carolyn Anne Wenner
Masters Theses
How do people determine satisfaction in their relationships? One way may be to engage in bottom-up processing and rely on sexual satisfaction to arrive at an overall evaluation of the relationship. Another way may be to engage in top-down processing and allow the overall relationship satisfaction to color the perceptions of sexual satisfaction. The current study more rigorously examined the causal relationship between sexual and marital satisfaction through multilevel cross-lagged regression analyses of 8 waves of marital and sexual satisfaction reported by 72 newlywed couples over the first five years of marriage. Consistent with bottom-up processing, initial sexual satisfaction predicted …

The Subject Representation Of Core Works In Women's Studies: A Critical Analysis Of The Library Of Congress Subject Headings, Susan E. Wood
Masters Theses
The system of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) has been the subject of feminist, critical examinations since the 1970s. Subject headings pertaining both to feminist literature and to women in general have been analyzed to determine how LCSH represents these topics. In this study, I contribute to this body of scholarship by analyzing and reporting on the nature of the LCSH subject representation of 52 core works published from 1986-1998 in the areas of feminist theory and women’s movements. These monographs were selected from the 3rd edition of Women’s Studies: A Recommended Bibliography (Krikos & Ingold, 2004). The analysis …
Breaking Down The Walls: Divorce And The Effects It Had On A Child's Communication In Relationships Outside Of The Family, Jennifer Maddox
Breaking Down The Walls: Divorce And The Effects It Had On A Child's Communication In Relationships Outside Of The Family, Jennifer Maddox
Masters Theses
There is no question that divorce is prevalent in our society today. This paper discussed a study about the effects divorce has on an adolescent girl's communication with adults outside of her family. The hypothesis was that divorce negatively effects a child's communication with adults outside of their family. The two methodologies used to conduct this study were Narrative Analysis and Q-sort. The ten participants for the Narrative Analysis method were asked whether they thought their parents divorce effected their communication with adults outside of their family, and whether the effect was negative or positive. They were also asked to …

An Interdisciplinary Theoretical Interpretive Synthesis Examining The Barriers To Implementing Restorative Justice As The Standard Paradigm Of Adult Criminal Justice Within The Context Of The United States, Matthew J. Van Maastricht
Masters Theses
A systemic paradigm shift of any sort is complex and multifaceted. A systemic paradigm shift of justice is no different. The purpose of this study is to identify the barriers that exist in a systemic paradigm shift from retributive justice to restorative justice. The methodology for this study is an interpretive synthesis of literature on restorative justice and consists of primarily theoretical literature. The literature for this study came from a variety of disciplines (e.g. psychology, criminal justice, sociology, and social work) in order to obtain a holistic perspective. A tripartite analysis was conducted using three perspectives: criminal justice, social …

Discovering The Vision In Beth Moore's "Breaking Free" Message: Applying Bormann's Fantasy Theme Analysis To Evaluate The Message, April Nicole Pressley
Masters Theses
Beth Moore, Christian speaker and author, has become a prominent figure in Christian circles. She ministers to over a million people a year with her messages. Breaking Free is her "life message." This project analyzes 6 of 11 messages from Breaking Free. Using Bormann's Fantasy Theme Analysis, seven fantasies emerged from the messages, which yielded a rhetorical vision that describes what Beth Moore believes a woman should be like after hearing her message. After that analysis, the fantasies where compared to evangelical Christian doctrine. That analysis determined that Moore's underlying message is valid and acceptable to the Christian audience she …
