The Development Of The Self-Death Awareness Scale, Thomas Francis Ryan Jr.
The Development Of The Self-Death Awareness Scale, Thomas Francis Ryan Jr.
Masters Theses
The purpose of the study was the development of the Self-Death Awareness Scale (SDAS), an instrument that is intended to measure the awareness of the fact that a person is mortal and is going to eventually die. The experimental instrument was administered to 100 persons equally divided into four age groups (ages 17-83). It was hypothesized that age and the SDAS were correlated with older persons being more aware of their own mortality than younger subjects. Also investigated were the variables of sex, occupation, education, church membership, number of children, marital status, and loss of family and friends through death. …
The Balfour Declaration And International Law, Thomas Noreuil
The Balfour Declaration And International Law, Thomas Noreuil
Masters Theses
An American general who formerly headed the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine stated recently: "The American mind is being manipulated as far as Palestine is concerned." He was referring to Zionist manipulations. My own experiences with the Zionist Organization of America, which refused to answer any of my requests for varied information, confirm the general's charge. My own acquaintance with the Palestine problem has revealed that the equities involved in the area have been buried under a mass of distortion, misinformation and insidious propaganda which have misrepresented the actual facts and veiled the historical and legal truth to …
Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers
Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers
Masters Theses
The present study was designed to determine whether physical distance between male and female interviewees and a female interviewer affected verbal productivity and anxiety level when interviewees discussed academic, social, and personal topics. The interview was conceptualized as an information-gathering interview. Crucial variables in such interviews are client participation and information flow. Client verbal productivity appears to be directly related to these variables, and was used as one dependent variable to measure the impact of distance on interviewee verbal behavior. A self-report measure of anxiety, the Fear Thermometer was used as a second dependent variable.
The experimental distances used in …
The Effect Of Locus Of Control Orientation On Faculty Evaluations, Kristie L. Kirby
The Effect Of Locus Of Control Orientation On Faculty Evaluations, Kristie L. Kirby
Masters Theses
The effect of a reward or reinforcement on behavior is contingent upon whether the person perceives the reward as dependent upon his own behavior or as independent from it. This perception has been termed locus of control orientation. The present study examined the relationship between the locus of control orientation of the student and the locus of control orientation of the instructor on a faculty evaluation form. An individual possessing an external locus of control orientation believes that reinforcement is the result of luck, chance, fate, or under the control of powerful others. An individual possessing an internal locus of …
Effects Of Behavior Rehearsal Versus Behavior Rehearsal Combined With Feedback And Instructions On Components Of Positive Assertive Behavior, Timothy Paul Follick
Effects Of Behavior Rehearsal Versus Behavior Rehearsal Combined With Feedback And Instructions On Components Of Positive Assertive Behavior, Timothy Paul Follick
Masters Theses
Assertive training is a treatment technique which has been deveveloped for those individuals who are generally unable to stand up for their rights or express their feelings towards others. The truely assertive individual should be equally adept at the expression of positive feelings as negative ones.
In basic assertive training, behavior rehearsal or behavior rehearsal combined with instructions and feedback are frequently used to shape assertive responding. These two treatment components have been widely researched and judged to significantly contribute to the acquisiton of negative assertion. However, there has been little research done with respect to their effect upon positive …

An Appraisal Of The Contingency Theory Of Leadership Effectiveness: A Methodological Analysis, Hoi Kin Suen
An Appraisal Of The Contingency Theory Of Leadership Effectiveness: A Methodological Analysis, Hoi Kin Suen
Masters Theses
The Contingency Theory of Leadership Effectiveness is one of the most comprehensive theories of leadership today. The theory postulates that leadership effectiveness is contingent upon the combination of leadership style and situational favorableness. Leader style is measured by the Esteem for Least-Preferred Coworker (LPC) scale. A high LPC score is interpreted as reflecting a relation-oriented leader, while a low LPC score reflects a task-oriented leader. Situational favorableness is determined by three variables: leader-member relations, task structure, and position power.
Recent studies have challenged the reliability and validity of the theory. This study is a critical analysis of the methodological and …

Social Status, Stature, And Pathology At Chucalissa (40sy1), Shelby County, Tennessee, Ronald K. Robinson
Masters Theses
Ethnohistoric and archaeological models have been used in making inferences about social interaction and relationships in Mississippian societies. In spite of an increasing awareness of cultural and biological interrelationships in approaching prehistoric societies, there remains a general lack of skeletal studies which have contributed to or supported these inferences.
The purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that socially regulated or defined differences between groups of individuals existed at Chucalissa (40SY1), incorporating both archaeological and skeletal data. The ethnohistoric model of the Natchez social system and Ford's (1974:406) generalization that Mississippian societies were highly stratified due to a …

Bone Flutes And Whistles From Archaeological Sites In Eastern North America, Katherine Lee Hall Martin
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to systematically classify perforated bone tubes known as flutes or whistles which had been recovered from archaeological sites in eastern North America. A sample was established from specimens described in the literature and additional specimens examined by the author. Sizeable collections in the Rochester Museum and Science Center in Rochester, New York, and the Ohio State Museum in Columbus, Ohio, were measured and photographed by the author. Specimens were also viewed at the McClung Museum in Knoxville, Tennessee.
A descriptive typology was constructed and spatial-temporal and functional correlations were tested against it. Spatial-temporal factors …

Opinions Toward Automated Information Retrieval Among Reference Librarians: A National Survey, Danuta A. Nitecki
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify opinions among members of the American Library Association (ALA), Reference and Adult Services Division (RASD) toward automated information retrieval services. Specifically, the primary objectives were to identify prevalent viewpoints concerning the role of librarians in relation to such services and to determine the practical needs of the profession to better cope with the new technology. A secondary objective was to experimentally test the effect of two variables on response rate. These variables were perceived prestige of sender and incentive for the respondent.
The survey was a one-shot descriptive research design, involving a …

The Changing Male Role? An Empirical Analysis, Floyd M. Stallings
Masters Theses
The purpose of this project was threefold: first, to review and critique a body of literature on the male sex role, and specifically the male liberation literature; second, to present a discussion of social psychological concepts pertinent to the topic of the male sex role which are often absent in the literature; and third, to conduct an exploratory study to determine if the behaviors and attitudes of the men interviewed were consistent with the themes expounded in the literature.
An open-ended interview schedule based on themes in the male sex role literature was developed. Thirty middle class, married males between …
