Validation Of A Measure Of Aggression, Jack Edward Shook Jan 1972

Validation Of A Measure Of Aggression, Jack Edward Shook

Masters Theses

The study attempted to validate a questionnaire as a method of measuring aggression resulting from frustration. The method consisted of correlating aggression measured by the questionnaire with aggression produced by an actual frustrating situation. An insult-failure technique was used to produce the frustration during the administration of a bogus aptitude test. Evaluation of the experimenter was the direct expression and measurement of aggression. A control group was used to insure validity of the frustration technique. Eighty six students participated in the study. The correlation was significant for males. The correlation was not significant for females. Males were not more aggressive …

The Effects Of The Four Psychological Primary Colors On Gsr, Heart Rate, And Respiration Rate, Keith W. Jacobs Jan 1972

The Effects Of The Four Psychological Primary Colors On Gsr, Heart Rate, And Respiration Rate, Keith W. Jacobs

Masters Theses

Measurement of GSR, heart rate, and respiration rate were taken on twenty-four male S's during presentation of four colors (red, yellow, green, blue). Four sequences of color presentations were used based on a 4 by 4 latin square with six subjects receiving each presentation. Significant color effects (p < .05) were found when GSR was used as the measure of activation. The most arousing color was red, followed by green, yellow, and blue, with significant differences in arousal value found between colors. Significant trial effects, disregarding colors, were found in respiration rate. No significant effects on heart rate were found as a function of trials or color. The arousal values of the colors do not support either a linear or U-shaped function of wave length.

The Relationship Between Self Concept And The Draw-A-Person Test, William Maurice Schaefer Jan 1972

The Relationship Between Self Concept And The Draw-A-Person Test, William Maurice Schaefer

Masters Theses

This study sought to expand a study by Kamano (1960) to a normal population. In that work, Kamano used the D.A.P. in conjunction with the Semantic Differential. He concluded that the Ss (schizophrenics) analyzed their drawings consistent with their own self concepts. In the present study the relation between Ss ratings of the D.A.P., their self concept, and judges ratings of the drawings were sought. It was predicted that the Ss would rate themselves and the Drawings similarly. This prediction was upheld for the Potency factor. There was interjudge reliability for this factor, but the prediction that there would be …

The Social History Questionnaire As Related To Length Of Stay In Psychotherapy, David P. Jachim Jan 1972

The Social History Questionnaire As Related To Length Of Stay In Psychotherapy, David P. Jachim

Masters Theses

A serious problem encountered in clinical practice concerns the large proportion of clients who begin therapy but for various reasons terminate treatment after only a few interviews and without the consent of the therapist. Representative studies by Kurland (1956), Haddock and Mensch (1957), and Rosenthal and Frank (1958) have emphasized the severity of this problem by indicating that most mental health clinics face the possibility of losing half of their therapy clients prematurely.

This problem necessitates some objective means for identifying potential terminators and remainers prior to their entering therapy. Such a technique would permit a more efficient utilization of …

An Experimental Study Of The Effect Of Long Hair Worn By Males Upon Immediate Recall In The Classroom Situation, Edward George Sutter Jan 1972

An Experimental Study Of The Effect Of Long Hair Worn By Males Upon Immediate Recall In The Classroom Situation, Edward George Sutter

Masters Theses

The appearance of the orator has been a concern of rhetoricians since the classical era. A review of contemporary literature revealed that authors in the area of communication still include theories regarding particulars of effective speaker appearance in their writings. Although authors of speech texts have become prescriptive in their directives of grooming, today’s theoretical preference for short hairstyles in educational speaking contexts has not been quantitatively tested. Therefore, this investigation was designed to experimentally assess the effects of the introduction of longer hairstyles in the classroom situation upon student’s immediate recall.

On hundred twenty-nine students enrolled in eight sections …

The Effects Of Leader Presence And Moderate Stress Upon Small Group Sentiment And Interaction, Ray Lewis Cordon Jan 1972

The Effects Of Leader Presence And Moderate Stress Upon Small Group Sentiment And Interaction, Ray Lewis Cordon

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of leader presence and moderate stress upon sentiment and interaction in small groups. Seventy-four students were selected from the required speech course at Eastern Illinois University to serve as subjects. These subjects were assigned to sixteen groups, ranging from four to five members per group.

Silent and absent leadership, imposed stress and no stress were introduced to the groups through a 2 X 2 factorial design. In one condition (N = 18) the group leader provided instructions and then remained silent during group interaction, and moderate stress--an announced time barrier--was …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Specific Parameters On An Experimental Analogue Of The Anxiety Relief Hypothesis, Gary W. Hardy Jan 1972

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Specific Parameters On An Experimental Analogue Of The Anxiety Relief Hypothesis, Gary W. Hardy

Masters Theses

Thirty-two, naive, albino rats were randomly assigned to one of eight treatment groups with four members per group. The apparatus used was a modified one-way avoidance chamber developed by Baum (1965). The variables studied were the effects of a retraining anxiety relief condition, a hierarchical presentation of tone with the anxiety relief condition, different inter-trial intervals, and the interactions of these variables. All subjects were given the anxiety training to a ninety decibel tone and one-half of the subjects were given anxiety relief training. All subjects were trained to a criterion of ten consecutive avoidance responses in a one-way avoidance …
