Ethics And/Or Success In Conducting Organization Studies: A Habermasian Account, Fabio Vizeu

The Qualitative Report

In the world of Organization research, some words are used by scholarswith a specific political purpose: two of these are ethics and emancipation. The second is used to recall the social purpose ofthe academic community, which can be donefromseveral perspectives (for example, that of Critical Management Studies). Regarding ethics, organization researchers often use this word to denounce managerial practices.Their researchcommonly reports the ideological orientation of such management practices as imply unethical behaviour. In this sense, the unethical orientation of managers has been seen as something masked by a manipulative discourse, which has built the false impression that management practices are …

A “How-To” Introduction On Pursuing Arts-Based Fiction Research And Writing As A Methodology: A Review Of Fiction As Research Practice: Short Stories, Novellas, And Novels, Aniuska M. Luna

The Qualitative Report

Research written as fiction can expand the audience pool and reach of knowledge generated in an accessible, familiar and less convoluted format than its more traditional methodological counterparts. Leavy’s (2013) book demonstrates how this is the case. Sh e eases interested researchers into how to plan and execute fiction - based research, and provides examples, useful tips and resources. An issue that is not explored in detail, however, is the advantages for readers of reading texts produced through this met hodology over those produced by fiction writers. This issue aside, Fiction as a research practice: Short stories, novellas, and novels …

The Qualitative Report

Nurse preceptors are integral to retaining new nurses. Given the challenges associated with attracting and retaining rural nurses (Trossman, 2001), the importance of preceptors in the retention of new nurses and the dearth of studies explicitly examining the attributes and qualifications of successful rural nurse preceptors, the purpose of this study was to unearth attributes and qualifications of successful rural nurse preceptors. In this basic qualitative study, 19 participants completed 1-2 hour in-depth interviews. Data was analyzed using the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Major themes included a sense of honor, professionalism, self-efficacy, and the ability to learn. …

Three Approaches To Case Study Methods In Education: Yin, Merriam, And Stake, Bedrettin Yazan Feb 2015

Three Approaches To Case Study Methods In Education: Yin, Merriam, And Stake, Bedrettin Yazan

The Qualitative Report

Case study methodology has long been a contested terrain in social sciences research which is characterized by varying, sometimes opposing, approaches espoused by many research methodologists. Despite being one of the most frequently used qualitative research methodologies in educational research, the methodologists do not have a full consensus on the design and implementation of case study, which hampers its full evolution. Focusing on the landmark works of three prominent methodologists, namely Robert Yin, Sharan Merriam, Robert Stake, I attempt to scrutinize the areas where their perspectives diverge, converge and complement one another in varying dimensions of case study research. I …

To lean in means to press forward or to move toward something. Leaning in is a deliberate way to approach something whether it is a strong wind or a new skill. Leaning in describes my stance toward autoethnography. I am making a step forward to understand what autoethnography is and how I might be able to use it in my personal research agenda. In reviewing the various approaches to autoethnography, I have found that Autoethnography as Method by Heewon Chang offers a comfortable entry point. Her methodical approach and practical guidelines for doing autoethnography are appealing and useful in creating …

Generic Qualitative Research In Psychology, William H. Percy, Kim Kostere, Sandra Kostere Feb 2015

Generic Qualitative Research In Psychology, William H. Percy, Kim Kostere, Sandra Kostere

The Qualitative Report

Some topics for qualitative research in psychology are unsuitable for or cannot be adapted to the traditional qualitative designs such as case study, ethnography, grounded theory, or phenomenology. This paper explores reasons for this, and proposes that psychological researchers can use a generic qualitative design in such situations. After discussing the types of topics most suitable for a generic qualitative design, the paper differentiates generic qualitative designs from the more traditional qualitative designs, with particular attention to how generic qualitative inquiry differs from phenomenological psychological research. Finally, appropriate procedures for data collection and for thematic data analysis in a generic …

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with eleven student veterans about transitioning from the U.S. military to civilian life and to a midsized, public university. The U.S. military and American institutions of higher education are significantly different, and these differences make adaptation for student veterans more difficult. The purpose of this research was to understand what this transition was like for student veterans and the factors that affected how they negotiated the move back home. Using framework analysis (Ritchie & Spencer, 1994), we noted five themes of student veterans’ military service that impacted their transition: (a) task …

"I'Ll Just Do My Time": The Role Of Motivation In The Rejection Of The Dwi Court Model, Deborah A. Eckberg, David Squier Jones Jan 2015

"I'Ll Just Do My Time": The Role Of Motivation In The Rejection Of The Dwi Court Model, Deborah A. Eckberg, David Squier Jones

The Qualitative Report

In the last decade, driving while intoxicated (DWI) courts based on the therapeutic court model have proliferated. Although the typical DWI court program allows offenders with multiple DWI offenses to avoid jail time and get their drivers’ licenses back sooner, not all offenders who are offered the opportunity to participate in DWI court choose to take advantage of it. Others try but drop out of the program early on. We conducted qualitative interviews with twelve people who were offered the opportunity to participate in an urban DWI court in a Midwestern county between 2007 and 2010, but who either chose …

Four public health directors, the County Health Officer and the Board of Health chairperson participated in the private, face-to-face interviews. These individuals were asked to participate because they have the ability to direct staff leadership development activities. A formal succession planning program did not exist at this agency; however, on an informal basis, leadership development …

A Review Of Anna De Fina And Alexandra Georgakopoulou's Analyzing Narrative: Discourse And Sociolinguistic Perspectives From A Natural Storytelling Environment, Robyn Jordan Jan 2015

A Review Of Anna De Fina And Alexandra Georgakopoulou's Analyzing Narrative: Discourse And Sociolinguistic Perspectives From A Natural Storytelling Environment, Robyn Jordan

The Qualitative Report

It was rather serendipitous, not that I broke my wrist, but that I chose to bring Anna De Fina and Alexandra Georgakopoulou's 2012 book, Analyzing Narrative: Discourse and Sociolinguistic Perspectives, to my physical therapy appointments. Three times a week for several weeks, I read left-handed with my right arm trapped in a device that radiated extreme heat or numbing cold. I encourage anyone with an interest in narrative analysis to read this book, especially, if possible, in the company of people with stories to tell (but minus the temperature variations). There are six chapters and I recommend that it be …

"We Never Thought It Would Be Like This": Refugees' Experiences In Sicily, Michelle Reale Jan 2015

"We Never Thought It Would Be Like This": Refugees' Experiences In Sicily, Michelle Reale

The Qualitative Report

The arrival of refugees by boat to Sicily is not, perhaps, significant in numbers, but from a humanitarian point of view it is a crisis in the truest sense of the word. Refugees that arrive in port cities are more susceptible to trafficking due to their extra vulnerability and impaired emotional and physical states. The three main preoccupations refugees are: the arduous and often deadly journey, their treatment upon arrival, and rebuilding their lives in a society that does not want them. They often wonder if what they encounter in Sicily is in some ways worse than the place they …

Interpreting Online Discussions: Connecting Artifacts And Experiences In User Studies, Jörgen Skågeby Jan 2015

Interpreting Online Discussions: Connecting Artifacts And Experiences In User Studies, Jörgen Skågeby

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents a methodological effort to connect the specifics of technologies to the details of social practices, in an attempt to deepen our understanding of evolving sociotechnical cultures. More specifically, this paper describes a methodological framework that makes use of online discussions as a vital source of data. The reason the paper focuses on online discussion is that the Internet has become a natural habitat for discussions of high-end technologies, be they physical products or online services. The framework combines interpretative research and attribute-consequence-value (ACV) chain theory – a theory commonly applied to market and consumer research – to …

Experience Of Being An Insider And An Outsider During A Qualitative Study With Men Who Have Experienced Significant Weight Loss, Darren D. Moore

The Qualitative Report

The major question being answered in the study is, “What is the experience of being an insider/outsider in a study regarding men and significant weight loss?” The purpose of the paper is to explore the experience of being both an insider and an outsider, and specifically to discuss how researcher status and self-disclosure emerged and impacted the research process. The methodology used in the research study is narrative inquiry, specifically self-narrative. In the study, membership role status was found to be difficult to define, inherently complex, and arbitrary at times. Additional research on the topic of membership role status is …

The Qualitative Report

In response to globalization in the counseling profession and the incorporation of international immersion courses in counselor education programs, the purpose of this study is to understand the lived experience of counselors-intraining participating internationally in a study abroad course. The research question was: What is the experience of a counselor-in-training who has participated in a study abroad trip as a part of their training program? Utilizing van Manen’s phenomenological methodology (1990), the researcher explored the experiences of four counselors-in-training participating in an international study abroad course. Overall emergent themes included experiencing new contexts, emotions, and new learning with an emphasis …

Engaging With Qualitative Data Analysis: The Metaphor Of "Looking At Data Like A Landscape To Be Explored", Marleny M. Bonnycastle Jan 2015

Engaging With Qualitative Data Analysis: The Metaphor Of "Looking At Data Like A Landscape To Be Explored", Marleny M. Bonnycastle

The Qualitative Report

“Looking at data like a landscape to be explored” is the metaphor used by Susanne Friese in her new book entitled Qualitative Data Analysis with ATLAS.ti (2014). In it, Friese successfully guides new and experienced researchers to use ATLAS.ti as a computer-assisted tool to engage in qualitative data analysis. The book transcends from being a dry reading to become a companion for those who are living the journey of using different sources of data, mapping them and then integrated them into their analysis.
