Assessment Of Sexual Violence Risk Perception In Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal For The Development And Validation Of "G-Date"., D. J. Angelone, Damon Mitchell, Brooke Wells, Megan Korovich, Alexandra Nicoletti, Dustin Fife Aug 2024

Assessment Of Sexual Violence Risk Perception In Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal For The Development And Validation Of "G-Date"., D. J. Angelone, Damon Mitchell, Brooke Wells, Megan Korovich, Alexandra Nicoletti, Dustin Fife

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence (SV) is a significant problem for sexual minorities, including men who have sex with men (MSM). The limited research suggests SV is associated with a host of syndemic conditions. These factors tend to cluster and interact to worsen one another. Unfortunately, while much work has been conducted to examine these factors in heterosexual women, there is a lack of research examining MSM, especially their SV risk perception. Further, MSM are active users of dating and sexual networking (DSN) mobile apps, and this technology has demonstrated usefulness for creating safe spaces for MSM to meet and engage partners. …

Using Landscape Archaeology To Gain Insight Into The Human Experience During The Late Woodland And Mississippian Periods In South Carolina’S Pee Dee River Basin, Noah Safari Aug 2024

Using Landscape Archaeology To Gain Insight Into The Human Experience During The Late Woodland And Mississippian Periods In South Carolina’S Pee Dee River Basin, Noah Safari

Theses and Dissertations

People move through and use the landscape in the ways they do for myriad reasons. The goal of this thesis was to elucidate how people viewed and settled in the Pee Dee River Basin area during the Late Woodland and Mississippian Periods in South Carolina. Framing my research with a landscape archaeology focus, by considering sites within a larger region or landscape, we can inhabit the “taskscapes” of the past and gain an understanding of the past (Ingold 1993).

To do this, I used the methodological lens of settlement ecology “to build a balance sheet of varying priorities (Stone 1996:8) …

Dynamics And Trends Of Oilseed Crops In Pakistan, Muhammad Nisar Khan, Arshad Mahmood Malik, Muhammad Abdul Rahman

Business Review

This study analyzes the trends and compound growth rates of Pakistan’s oilseed crops from the year 1971-72 to 2021-22. The acreage, production, and yields of essential crops such as rapeseed-mustard and canola, sunflower, peanut, sesame, soybean, safflower, linseed, and castor seed are examined using trend analysis and compound growth rate estimations. The study's conclusions show a marked change in favor of a greater reliance on imported edible oilseeds and a decline in indigenous production. Despite this, certain crops, such as mustard and rapeseed, have a positive production trend, indicating increased agricultural efficiency. Groundnut cultivation area and production have increased significantly, …

The Experience Of Pet Ownership In Transitional Housing, Kathryn Holden Ots, Susan Macdermott Otd, Otr/L Aug 2024

The Experience Of Pet Ownership In Transitional Housing, Kathryn Holden Ots, Susan Macdermott Otd, Otr/L

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

25% of people experiencing homelessness have pets, but few transitional housing programs allow pets (Rhoades et al., 2015); therefore, there is a gap in the literature about the experience of pet ownership during the transitional housing process. This study aimed to explore pet owners' experiences at a transitional housing site in San Diego County. The student interviewed two current dog owners and four recent dog owners. All participants prioritized their pets because it was their strongest relationship. The prioritization of their dogs positively and negatively influenced occupational engagement. While receiving services, owners experienced consequences when separated from their dogs, including …

Ot’S Role In Facilitating Foster Youth's Transition To College And Career Exploration, Stacey Tang, Amy Lyons-Brown

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

Foster youths often face numerous adversities, limiting their occupational performance and ability to transition into adulthood, specifically regarding career and education. This poster explores the role of Occupational Therapy (OT) in supporting these youths as they age out of foster care, particularly focusing on college and career exploration. Using the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) and KAWA River models, a needs assessment was conducted in collaboration with Foster Love, a non-profit organization. The assessment revealed gaps in resources and support for foster youths, leading to the development of workshops that foster self-reflection, emotional regulation, and goal setting as they navigate their transition into …

How Can Dei Training Change The Culture Of An Organization To Achieve Belonging And Retain Diverse Employees?, Kaisa S. Holt

University Honors Theses

Studies show the need for innovation and higher productivity yields can be best achieved through workforce heterogeneity. Creating effective DEI training frameworks is crucial for belonging, sustainable social well-being and enacting real change. This is key to proactively shifting our current system from one that responds to the need for DEI on a surface level to something that is regenerative. The aim of this review is to evaluate characteristics and enhancements added to evidence-based DEI training between 2020 and 2024. Studies were identified using the Portland State advanced database of academic journals on the DEI training and impacts of the …

An Assessment Of Drinking Water Equity In South Carolina: Access, Affordability, Quality, And Private Well Resources, Catherine Lippert Min

Theses and Dissertations

Universal access to good quality, affordable drinking water is a goal that has not yet been reached in the United States. Recently, national studies have investigated drinking water burdens including lack of access to complete plumbing, unaffordability, and poor quality individually. However, no study has examined all of these drinking water burdens together to identify communities facing multiple burdens. This study addresses this gap by analyzing disparities in access to complete plumbing, affordability of public water sources, and drinking water quality of community water systems in South Carolina and identifying communities that face multiple burdens. This study also provides the …

Businesses Or Beneficiaries: The Submerged Consequences Of Workfare Policy Design, Morgan Alexander Lowder Aug 2024

Businesses Or Beneficiaries: The Submerged Consequences Of Workfare Policy Design, Morgan Alexander Lowder

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation critically analyzes the policy association between the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), and in doing so, sheds light on the employer-uplifting design of the U.S. welfare state. I examine this association in three stand-alone Chapters with the intent of answering the following questions: 1) Is the SNAP-WOTC association mutually beneficial to SNAP recipients and the employers that access the WOTC; 2) Is the SNAP-WOTC association truly intended to be mutually beneficial; and 3) What are the perceptive consequences of revealing how SNAP benefits employers through the WOTC. Using both quantitative and …

Exploring Heat Variations In Columbia, South Carolina, Michael Graeme Hohlfeld Aug 2024

Exploring Heat Variations In Columbia, South Carolina, Michael Graeme Hohlfeld

Theses and Dissertations

As the leading cause of weather-related fatalities in the United States, the concept of heat as a hazard has been studied for decades, especially in the urban environment. Urban heat island research is limited by the fact that most investigate land surface temperature rather than air temperature and other variables that affect human comfort including humidity. This thesis utilizes a public network of weather stations in Richland County, South Carolina to investigate differences in heat between the city of Columbia, and more rural parts of the county. The study period was June, July, and August of 2022. Results indicate that …

The Impact Of Delaying Early School Tracking On Fertility And Marriage Outcomes, Serena Canaan Aug 2024

The Impact Of Delaying Early School Tracking On Fertility And Marriage Outcomes, Serena Canaan

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper studies how the type of education pursued at an early age affects family formation. I focus on a French reform that delayed the age of which students were tracked into either general or vocational education from age 11 to age 13. For the most part, tracking was replaced with grouping students into classrooms based on ability, but within a common general education curriculum. Using a regression discontinuity design, I show that the reform increased the likelihood of attaining a technical rather than a vocational degree, especially for individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This indicates that the reform led …

The Meaning Of Work For Generation Y And Baby Boomer Individuals During The Pandemic: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Tabitha Coates Aug 2024

The Meaning Of Work For Generation Y And Baby Boomer Individuals During The Pandemic: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Tabitha Coates

The Qualitative Report

Findings on generational differences and similarities are inconclusive and inconsistent. There is a need to conduct research that focuses on a deeper understanding of generations, that can help overcome stereotypes in the workplace. The uncertainty and disruption of the pandemic generated an opportunity to understand the lived experience of constructing and reconstructing meaning in relation to work. This article presents findings from a hermeneutic phenomenological study conducted to understand the meaning of work during the pandemic among seven participants, four Generation Y individuals and three Baby Boomers, and in what ways, if any, their meaning of work changed. Five essential …

Co-Design To Evaluate The Impact Of Gender Equality Initiatives: Lessons For Practitioners, Evaluators And Researchers, Helen Taylor, Sue Williamson

The Qualitative Report

Achieving gender equality is an ongoing challenge in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) disciplines in universities globally, including in Australia, where our study was located. As institutions that deliver research and teaching in STEMM, universities have committed to a range of initiatives and programs to address this challenge. The Athena Swan Institutional Award is one such program, operating as an accreditation process that measures progress towards gender equality, and is reliant on demonstrating impact. The work required to meet accreditation standards is extensive. Very little academic literature has advanced qualitative methodology suited to delivering the evaluation of gender …

Helping To Make The Complex Accessible: A Review Of Larsen And Adu’S The Theoretical Framework In Phenomenological Research: Development And Application, Stephanie Greenquist-Marlett Aug 2024

Helping To Make The Complex Accessible: A Review Of Larsen And Adu’S The Theoretical Framework In Phenomenological Research: Development And Application, Stephanie Greenquist-Marlett

The Qualitative Report

Understanding the philosophical underpinnings behind phenomenological research is critical for pursuing a proper qualitative study on one’s lived experiences. Larsen and Adu’s The Theoretical Framework in Phenomenological Research: Development and Application succeeds in breaking down the theoretical viewpoints and methodology of phenomenology and delivering it in a manageable way for researchers and practitioners alike. While novices may find the complexity of the theoretical content comparing Edward Husserl’s transcendental approach and Heidegger’s hermeneutic Dasein framework to be daunting, the book does lend itself as an instructional tool that offers easy-to-follow guidelines for those at any experience level interested in pursuing a …

World In Crises: Towards Qualitative Interviewing Through Existential Questions, Sona Balasanyan, Hasmik Gevorgyan

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative interviewing is a widely applied method of data collection in social sciences. Over time, continual diversification of this method led to more multi-modal and participant-centered qualitative research paradigms. This methodological article examines the role of qualitative interviews within the context of the psychosocial approach and its application in understanding interview experiences in critical life situations. Accounting for research ethics and embracing existential questions, qualitative interviewing gains added value in understanding and responding to interviewees who face crises. Drawing on various methodological approaches, including oral history, biographical, feminist, phenomenological, and cross-cultural, this study explores how interviewing evolves into a complex …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Abstract Background Emerging biomarker technologies (e.g., MRI, EEG, digital phenotyping, eye-tracking) have potential to move the identification of autism into the first year of life. We investigated the perspectives of parents about the anticipated utility and impact of predicting later autism diagnosis from a biomarker-based test in infancy. Methods Parents of infants were interviewed to ascertain receptiveness and perspectives on early (6-12 months) prediction of autism using emerging biomarker technologies. One group had experience parenting an older autistic child (n=30), and the other had no prior autism parenting experience (n=25). Parent responses were analyzed using inductive qualitative coding methods. Results …

How Do Doctoral Students Perceive Supervision? Lessons Learned From Indonesia, Elok Putri Nimasari, Syihabul Irfan, Ariyanti Ariyanti, Ahmad Iklil Saifulloh

The Qualitative Report

Theorised in Vygotskyan sociocultural and Bakhtinian dialogical perspectives, this article addresses Indonesian postgraduates’ perceptions of their doctoral supervision for their thesis proposal. Twelve Indonesian doctoral students participated in this interpretative phenomenology study. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews lasting eight months. Drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis, the findings identified four micro themes of sociocultural and dialogical theory (i.e., shared expertise, critical dialogue, constructive feedback, and encouraging diverse perspectives). The present study contributed empirical evidence on how doctoral students benefit from their supervisory process in sociocultural and dialogical perspectives embedded with different supervisory dimensions.
