Tomorrow's Research Library: Vigor Or Rigor Mortis?, Richard Hacken Nov 1988

Tomorrow's Research Library: Vigor Or Rigor Mortis?, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

The gamut of futuristic visions in library literature—from optimistic to pessimistic, from realistic to fanciful. Contradictory answers to recurring questions are found: Can we finally say goodbye to Gutenberg? Will the library card be replaced by the telephone credit card? Will book ownership give way entirely to information access. Will "books without pages" and "libraries without walls" necessarily lead to librarians without jobs? Is it possible to set timetables? After past crystal ball gazers are compared, contrasted, and critiqued, positive plans for progress are suggested.

A Relational Analysis Of Patients' Perceptions Of Physicians' Noverbal Immediacy & Patients' Satisfaction With Their Physicians, Stuart Schrader

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines the relationship between patients' perception of physicians' nonverbal immediacy and patients' satisfaction with their physicians. Using a newly designed scale tor measuring nonverbal immediacy and patients' satisfaction with their physicians, the researcher tested one hundred and eighty-nine patients of six southern, male, caucasian doctors to determine if a significant correlation exists between composite scores. These doctors practice in Southern Kentucky, specializing as internists, general practitioners, and family practitioners. Both scales use a composite measure based on the summation of all twelve questions within the scale. Data analysis included reliability coefficients, factor analysis, multiple regression analysis, Pearson correlations, …

Development Of A Weighted Application Blank For The Carryout Clerk Classification In A Large Retail Organization, Linda Gabbard Nov 1988

Development Of A Weighted Application Blank For The Carryout Clerk Classification In A Large Retail Organization, Linda Gabbard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a Weighted Application Blank to predict turnover for use as a selection tool for a large retail organization. Utilizing the England (1971) procedure, it was hypothesized that significant derivation and cross-validities would be obtained. The hypothesis was partially supported: the derivation validity coefficient was significant (r = .28, p < .01) and the resulting cross-validity coefficient was net significant (r = 19, p < .05). The results and recommendations for implementation of the WAB are discussed.

Social Welfare In Emerging World Culture, Roger A. Lohmann Nov 1988

Social Welfare In Emerging World Culture, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The paper argues for the emergence of a world-wide universal pluralistic culture, in which a common core of humanitarian values will eventually be institutionalized in the major institutions of each society in ways which are consistent with the unique historical, cultural, economic and political context of that society. It is this process of adaptation of universal, or at least trans-cultural, values to the unique circumstances of individual cultures which can be called "indigenization".

Social Welfare In The Emerging World Culture, Roger A. Lohmann Nov 1988

Social Welfare In The Emerging World Culture, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The end of the cold war brought with it a new period of globalization and an emerging world cultural consensus in which social welfare values of the welfare state figure importantly. An essential element of this development has been indigenization in which universal social welfare values, like those on display at various United Nations agencies and in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights are adapted and fitted to the unique demands and requirements of individual cultures.

Pre-Lent Celebrations: Shrovetide & Carnival, Eleonore Mitchell Nov 1988

Pre-Lent Celebrations: Shrovetide & Carnival, Eleonore Mitchell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The history of pre-Lent celebrations is traced through the presentation, comparison, and evaluation of the main theses of origin held by Shrovetide and Carnival scholars. It is determined that the question whether the festivals are of pagan or Christian origin is not important for the analysis of their present-day significance. Their vitality stems first of all from the general importance of celebration for humans to define themselves in a setting in which they can perform, act, and behave in non-traditional ways that cannot be transferred to everyday life. However, the festivals' uniqueness can be defined through two main characteristics: (I) …
