In Search Of The Fair Jury : Does Extended Voir Dire Remedy The Effects Of Pretrial Publicity?, Hedy Red Dexter
In Search Of The Fair Jury : Does Extended Voir Dire Remedy The Effects Of Pretrial Publicity?, Hedy Red Dexter
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study asked two important questions: Does prejudicial pretrial publicity produce bias which may impair juror objectivity and, if it does, can voir dire remedy its untoward effects? Subjects were 68 college undergraduates whose political attitudes had been assessed and who had or had not read case-specific pretrial publicity one week before viewing a murder trial. Trial proceedings took place at the University of Miami law school. Voir dire, trial viewing, and deliberations were conducted in UM's moot courtroom. As predicted, analyses revealed main effects for both voir dire and pretrial publicity such that pretrial publicity increased conviction rate …

Public Radio: Three Stations' Survival, Michael L. Hilt
Communication Faculty Publications
DI)very year Americans give millions of dollars to help support local public radio stations. In some communities only one radio station asks its audience for help- But in nearly half of the radio markets in the United States, two or more noncommercial radio stations solicit funds from the public. According to the 1983 Broadcasting Yearbook, 126 of the 259 radio markets have more than two public radio stations.

B831: The Role Of Human Capital In The Adoption Of Conservation Tillage: The Case Of Aroostook County, Maine, Potato Farmers, Michele C. Marra, Beatrice C. Ssali
Bulletins
Given the continuing potential loss from soil erosion and the significant effort put forth recently to alleviate the problem in Aroostook County, it is important to study ways to improve the success rate of that effort. One way to improve the soil loss problem is for farmers to adopt conservation tillage practices for those areas where there are significant benefits from doing so. The objective of this study is to identify the characteristics important in the adoption decisions of Aroostook County farmers. The Maine results will be compared with results from a study in Iowa to identify any differences in …

Ducking The Diversity Issue: Newspapers’ Real Failure Is Performance, Ted Pease
Journalism and Communication Faculty Publications
Perhaps we've paid too much attention to issues of hiring minorities and diversifying newsrooms, avoiding the tougher questions of content, coverage and newspapers' role in a pluralistic society. After each annual newsroom nose-count is completed, where do newspapers stand on issues of performance?

There are painfully few nonwhites among the ranks of top newspaper executives. No Card Cat—No Problem! : Wln’S Lasercat Provides Another Opportunity For Cooperation, Gail Z. Eckwright, Mary K. Bolin
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
This article discusses the implementation of WLN’s Laser-Cat CD-ROM catalog in a medium-sized academic li brary. It describes the creation of a LaserCat/Information desk in the library lobby and the use of technical services librarians and paraprofessional staff from technical services and elsewhere in the library to staff the desk.
In large libraries, public and technical services functions have generally been quite distinct. In small libraries, on the other hand, every librarian and staff member has had to be a generalist, and there may not be the possibility of maintaining a strict division between the traditional functions, even if that …
