Mathews County Shipbuilding Patterns, 1780-1860, Peter Jennings Wrike
Mathews County Shipbuilding Patterns, 1780-1860, Peter Jennings Wrike
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the volume and characteristics of a Chesapeake Bay county's shipbuilding activity to assess its impact on American waterborne commerce. The thesis proposes that this county built a significant number of fast sailing vessels in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Previous works on American shipbuilding as well as regional histories have overlooked this county and concentrated on nearby large ports such as Norfolk and Baltimore. This thesis suggests these ports acted more as vessel brokers to the maritime industry than manufacturers and that this county was, among other small bay counties, a major contributor to that …

Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat
Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A computer-based vowel articulation training aid has been developed. A "continuous" acoustic-phonetic transformation is performed to map speech parameters to a lower dimensionality display space. There are two possible approaches to this transformation problem. The transformation could be either linear or a combination nonlinear/linear. The nonlinear transformation is performed using a multi-layered feedforward neural network with linear output layers. Speech parameters are extracted either from an analog filter bank arrangement (band energies) or by a digital signal processing procedure (Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients). The speech parameters obtained from both methods correspond to the spectral envelope of the speech signals. The …
Validation Of The Human Factors Satisfaction Questionnaire, James Carlopio
Validation Of The Human Factors Satisfaction Questionnaire, James Carlopio
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
In order to predict behavior in organizations, it is important to understand and to consider both the individual employee and his/her interaction with the physical work environment. The main purpose of this research was to gather evidence of the validity of the Human Factors Satisfaction Questionnaire (HFSQ) in order to provide a tool with which employees' preceptions of several elements of their physical work environments can be measured. The physical work environment and its relationship to both organization theory and motivation theory is discussed. Evidence of the construct validity of the HFSQ was sought through the administration of the HFSQ …
Hemispheric Effects Of Verbal Information Processing On Single And Dual Task Performance, Gwendolyn Lorell Pearson
Hemispheric Effects Of Verbal Information Processing On Single And Dual Task Performance, Gwendolyn Lorell Pearson
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Several theories have been proposed to predict performance when operators time share tasks. The Hemispheres as Resources Model suggests tasks will be performed efficiently together if each hemisphere allocates resources to one task. The Task Hemispheric Integrity Principle predicts the best dual task performance will be found when the shortest processing route is maintained. The purpose of the present study was to test the single and dual task performance predictions of these two models. The concurrent performance of two verbal tasks was used to compare the importance of ear of attention, hemisphere of processing, response hand and gender on task …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1989-90, Bruce B. Johnson, Timothy Schroeder
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1989-90, Bruce B. Johnson, Timothy Schroeder
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports
In Nebraska, 1989 was another year of active market activity and increasing agricultural land values. These were two of the findings evident from the 1990 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey reports. The 1990 survey revealed a smaller average rate of increase of 9 percent during the 12-month period ending February 1, 1990 than reported for the year earlier. This smaller increase is a reflection of previous increases in farmland values and some decrease in net farm income during 1989.
The crop reporting districts showing the highest average land value change for the 12-month period were the North and Central …

Minnesota Housing Reports
The Minnesota Housing Report is compiled on the basis of monthly housing reports furnished to the Minnesota Real Estate Research Center at St. Cloud State University. Funding to permit preparation of the Minnesota Housing Report is provided by the Educational Foundation of the Minnesota Association of REALTORS and St. Cloud State University.
The reports are supplied by fourteen cooperating local real estate boards representing 80 percent of Minnesota' s population. The boards represent various areas of the state and thus provide a picture of housing diversity between regions as well as housing trends within regions.
Information presented for the state …

Industrial Policy In An Export-Propelled Economy: Lessons From South Korea's Experience, Larry E. Westphal
Industrial Policy In An Export-Propelled Economy: Lessons From South Korea's Experience, Larry E. Westphal
Economics Faculty Works
Korea provides an illuminating case of state intervention to promote economic development. Like many other third world governments, Korea's government has selectively intervened to affect the allocation of resources among industrial activities. It has used taxes and subsidies, credit rationing, various kinds of licensing, and the creation of public enterprises, for example. But these policies have been applied in the context of a radically different development strategy, one of export-led industrialization. Moreover, Korea's economy has experienced exceptionally rapid development with relatively equitable distribution of the gains. This paper argues that the government's selective industrial policies have contributed importantly to Korea's …

The Repertory Of Social Care Of The Elderly, Roger A. Lohmann
The Repertory Of Social Care Of The Elderly, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper is an analysis of aspects of the emergence of a repertory of social care services for the elderly from the vantage point of the common theory of voluntary action. One facet of that theory, labeled here as endowment theory, is an emerging rational choice model of the praxeological implications of voluntary action within the pragmatic problem-solving tradition. Three terms – endowment, repertory and commons – are presented in the paper as terms whose conventional meanings contain previously undisclosed connotations relevant to a fuller understanding of voluntary action.

Comparison Of The Efficacy Of General And Specific Performance Dimensions In An Operational Assessment Center, Wanda J. Campbell
Comparison Of The Efficacy Of General And Specific Performance Dimensions In An Operational Assessment Center, Wanda J. Campbell
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to compare the effectiveness of three general performance dimensions and 14 specific dimensions on various aspects of rating quality.
The categorization phase of the research tested the hypothesis that categorization accuracy and reliability would be a significantly greater for the general performance dimensions than for the specific dimensions. The results provided partial support for this hypothesis.
The aggregation phase of the research tested the following hypotheses: (1) rating accuracy would be greater when relevant behaviors were displayed with high frequency than when they were displayed with low frequency; (2) rating accuracy would be greater …
The Displacement Effect Of Reemployment Bonus Programs, Carl Davidson, Stephen A. Woodbury
The Displacement Effect Of Reemployment Bonus Programs, Carl Davidson, Stephen A. Woodbury
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper explores whether reemployment bonuses--cash payments made to insured unemployed workers who find reemployment quickly--have the unintended consequence of displacing workers who are not covered by the bonus program. We develop two partial equilibrium matching models of the labor market, patterned after the work of Diamond (1982), Mortensen (1982), and Pissarides (1984). In the first model, wages are assumed exogenous, in the second endogenous. In both, we find that the direct substitution of covered for uncovered workers (which constitutes displacement) is countered by two offsetting effects : a gross job creation effect, which results from the increased search effort …
Interpersonal Influence As Active Coping: Effects Of Task Difficulty On Cardiovascular Reactivity, Timothy Smith, Michael Baldwin, Alan Christensen
Interpersonal Influence As Active Coping: Effects Of Task Difficulty On Cardiovascular Reactivity, Timothy Smith, Michael Baldwin, Alan Christensen
Alan J. Christensen
This study examined the effects of attempting social influence on cardiovascular reactivity. Subjects were randomly assigned to a noncontingent reward condition or one of three conditions in which receipt of a monetary reward was contingent on their ability to influence another individual through a persuasive communication. In the contingent conditions, the task was presented as either easy, difficult, or very difficult. Measures of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate were recorded while subjects prepared and delivered the persuasive communication (contingent conditions) or reviewed and read aloud the same statement without an incentive to influence. The contingent conditions …
An Evaluation Of Columbia Villa/Tamaracks Community Service Intervention Project, Gerald F. Blake, Martin L. Abbott, Debra Lynn Lindberg
An Evaluation Of Columbia Villa/Tamaracks Community Service Intervention Project, Gerald F. Blake, Martin L. Abbott, Debra Lynn Lindberg
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The Community Service Intervention Program (CSlP) is a unique public agency response to a multifaceted set of problems confronting low income residents living in Oregon 's largest public housing project. The primary goals of the CSIP are to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime among residents, and to improve the quality of life of the families living in Columbia Villa/Tamaracks.
The evaluation of the CSIP combined a number of different research methods, on different analytical levels, to provide a summary assessment. Data were collected from individuals, from agencies, and from police records in a post facto analysis of the …
