Review Of Essays On The Historical Geography Of The Canadian West: Regional Perspectives On The Settlement Process, Frank Tough
Review Of Essays On The Historical Geography Of The Canadian West: Regional Perspectives On The Settlement Process, Frank Tough
Great Plains Quarterly
Essays on the Historical Geography of the Canadian West is a fine example of a department's contribution to regional studies. The eight essays from six contributors in an attractive, readable, and well-bound monograph are a useful addition to western Canadian studies. The essays (Darby, "From River Boat to Raillines: Circulation Patterns in the Canadian West during the Last Quarter of the Nineteenth Century"; Holmes, "The Canmore Corridor, 1880-1914: A Case Study of the Selection and Development of a Pass Site"; Hadley, "Photography, Tourism and the CPR: Western Canada, 1884- 1914"; Evans, "The Origin of Ranching in Western Canada: American Diffusion …

Oglala Sioux Use Of Medical Herbs, George Robert Morgan, Ronald R. Weedon
Great Plains Quarterly
Despite the turmoil of Sioux cultural losses since contact with Anglo-European culture, the Oglala Sioux have maintained an interest in herbal medicines, although with each passing generation the number of plants actively used for curing has diminished. Fewer people have been learning the identification of plant medicines and their uses, the procedures for preparing plants, and the techniques of herbal cures. Many of the older Sioux blame reservation boarding schools for the disruption of cultural transmission, but other factors have been at work as well.

Us Army Foreign Science And Technology Center [A Brochure], Robert Bolin , Depositor
Department of Defense Military Intelligence
The Foreign Science and Technology Center (FSTC) was a special-purpose intelligence production organization concerned with weapons and equipment of foreign ground forces.
This document is a lengthy, polished brochure giving a general overview of FSTC apparently intended for recruitment purposes. It outlines the mission and function of FSTC and of its subdivisions and gives a thumb-nail sketch of the history of the organization.
Although it is undated, information in the text indicates that it was probably published around 1990.

Communications Challenges In A Smaller World, John G. Richardson, Stephen J. Lilley, Robert B. Gregory
Sociology Faculty Publications
Technological change and overlapping social, environmental. educational and political issues have increased the need for understandable communications among the different countries of the world. Because English is wldely used. many Americans have no other language capability and are at a disadvantage in many situations. In addition, changes in the ethnic composition of the United States have intensified the need for skills in other languages. The need for second-language skills is perhaps greater among agriculturalists than it is for other areas. The Cooperative Extension System has Important roles to play in expanding these communication skills.

An Overview Of Bibliotherapy And Its Applications In The Elementary Classroom, Kerry Sue Abernathy
All Graduate Projects
Bibliotherapy has been used for many years as an aid to the healing process. The concept of using literature to promote mental health has been increasingly accepted as a valid therapeutic method in recent years. Bibliotherapy has, in the past, been used primarily with adults. This study will focus on recent developments to help children grow and develop a positive self-concept through literature. Book lists have been compiled from the many children's books available on the subjects of death and dying, illness, divorce, fears, handicaps, blended families, single parents, friendship, physical development, family relationships, attitudes and values, emotions and feelings, …

Privatization In The Center And The Latin American Periphery, Melvin Burke
Privatization In The Center And The Latin American Periphery, Melvin Burke
School of Economics Faculty Scholarship
"Privatization" is being promoted in this decade as the ultimate economic panacea. The latest "privatization craze" began in 1980 in Britain under Margaret Thatcher and has since spread throughout the industrialized nations of the world, such as France, Japan, the United States. More recently, the policy of privatization has been introduced in Mexico, Brazil, and other Third World countries. Billions of dollars of public assets have already been sold on the market to private investors and billions more of government tax revenues have been contracted out to private firms during this decade.
What precisely is this latest economic phenomenon sweeping …

Emotional Processing In The Treatment Of Simple Phobia: A Comparison Of Imaginal And In Vivo Exposure, Jeffrey E. Hecker
Emotional Processing In The Treatment Of Simple Phobia: A Comparison Of Imaginal And In Vivo Exposure, Jeffrey E. Hecker
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Two groups of moderately snake phobic college students were given either imaginal or in vivo exposure treatment. The groups were compared on self-report and physiological measures of fear activation during exposure trials, as well as on within- and across-session habituation of fear responses. On these measures, as well as on treatment outcome, the two groups were found to be very similar. The results lend further support to the importance of the concept of emotional processing in understanding fear reduction processes. Differences in treatment procedure may be important only when one procedure facilitates emotional processing more than another.

Effects Of Surgery On The Mental Status Of Older Persons. A Meta-Analytic Review, Arthur G. Cryns, Kevin M. Gorey, Marion Z. Goldstein
Social Work Publications
The data bases of 18 empirical studies were combined into one comprehensive data set and subjected to meta-analysis. The following trends were observed: (1) surgery has a significantly decompensating impact on the mental status of older persons, and the average effect size observed is modest (r = .37); (2) for all mental status measures included in the review (cognition, delirium and affect), effect size appears to be significantly moderated by patient age; (3) patient sex may be predictive of the kind of mental impairment that is most likely to occur within an older surgery population, with women manifesting a greater …
Identity Empowerment Through Clinical Sociology, C. Margaret Hall
Identity Empowerment Through Clinical Sociology, C. Margaret Hall
Clinical Sociology Review
Identity empowerment is defined as the deliberate enhancement of clients' awareness of their values and goals and of clients' expression of these values and goals in everyday behavior. Values are the deepest and broadest objectives or goals with which an individual can identify. Identity empowerment culminates in observable increases in clients' behavioral expressions of their values in social commitments. The process of clinical discussion and behavioral applications promotes clients' well-being and effectiveness by increasing the durability and flexibility of their bonds with significant others and by strengthening their motivations to accomplish meaningful goals in their lives.

A Technique For Predicting Intraorganizational Action, Robert C. Anderson
A Technique For Predicting Intraorganizational Action, Robert C. Anderson
Clinical Sociology Review
This paper is addressed to the problem of forging a closer link between theoretical and empirical analysis of a given organization. An analytic research method and instrument capable of systematically transforming certain theoretical organizational concepts into operational form is presented. The technique and its instrumentation were designed to, when fitted with appropriate theoretical substantive variables, efficiently yet accurately describe, explain, and predict the consequences of changing specified organizational variables within an organization.

Pioneers Of Modern Geography: Translations Pertaining To German Geographers Of The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Robert C. West
GreyZone
This collection of English translations samples the writings and/or critiques thereon of six important German geographers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: those of August Meitzen, Eduard Hahn, Otto Schliiter, Alfred Hettner, Siegfried Passarge, and Karl Sapper. Each of these scholars influenced in various ways the course of modem geographical thinking and instruction in German universities, and their methodologies were also adopted in part by professional geographers in other European countries and in the United States. Four of them—Hahn, Schliiter, Hettner and Passarge— were students of Ferdinand von Richthofen, often considered the “father” of professional geography in Germany. …
