She Was There Too: Enslaved Black Women, Agency, And Community, Jael Davis Nov 2023

She Was There Too: Enslaved Black Women, Agency, And Community, Jael Davis

Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship

Rarely are the experiences of enslaved women prioritized in studying the history of enslavement in the United States. This is particularly true in relation to how black women experienced, survived, and carved out agency in the face of sexual violence. Rather than acknowledge the strength demonstrated by these women, contemporary historiography relegates them to the position of victims. This research intervenes in this practice and argues that enslaved women worked hard to create agency for themselves in the face of sexual violence from those that enslaved them. More specifically, it argues that the presence of a community of other enslaved …

Calladita No Te Ves Más Bonita: Cultural Practices Within Latina Women’S Advocacy | Poster, Gabriela Córdova Nov 2023

Calladita No Te Ves Más Bonita: Cultural Practices Within Latina Women’S Advocacy | Poster, Gabriela Córdova

Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship

Historically, Latina women-led advocacy groups have faced significant underrepresentation within academia, leading to an erasure of their experiences and contributions. For this reason, it is imperative to take on a thorough analysis that respects the nuances of Latina women's advocacy. In recognizing how their identities enable them to bring about meaningful change, we see the Latina woman's role as an agent of advocacy. Therefore, this exploratory research study investigates the incorporation of cultural practices within two Latina-led organizations in Chicago, Amigas Latinas, and Mujeres Latinas En Acción, from the mid-20th century to the present. I employ Anita Tijerina Revilla's Muxerista …

The Bracero Program’S Legacy On Its Participants | Poster, Lila Nambo Nov 2023

The Bracero Program’S Legacy On Its Participants | Poster, Lila Nambo

Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship

The Bracero Program was a bi-nationally sponsored by the U.S. and Mexico which meant to provide labor in the agricultural and industrial sectors of American society during World War II. The program ran from 1942 and 1964 where about 4.5 million Mexican men were contracted to provide labor in the U.S. for a period of time not exceeding six months. There is much documented about the Bracero Program’s history, but there is not a vast amount of sources that focus on the braceros’ personal accounts on their experiences in the program. How the Bracero Program is remembered often doesn’t include …

Invisible In Plain Sight: A Qualitative Analysis Of The U.S. Public Health Service Syphilis Study And Contemporary Issues Of Iatrophobia In Black Women | Poster, Krystal Morgan

Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship

The U.S. Public Health Service Syphilis Study (USPHSSS) is the nation’s most infamous example of biomedical misconduct in the United States. Using the wives and the descendants of the USPHSSS as a case study, this project examines and conceptualizes how the lack of healthcare access and secondhand healthcare the wives and descendants received has had a cumulative impact on Black women and contemporary iatrophobia, using a Black feminist ethical and constructivist theoretical framework. Findings reflect two major themes for contemporary iatrophobia: systemic racism and what Muhjah Shakir terms the cultural constellation of silence.

Disrupting The Gender Script: How Beyoncé’S Lemonade Reimagines A Black Queer Feminine | Poster, Samara J. Smith Nov 2023

Disrupting The Gender Script: How Beyoncé’S Lemonade Reimagines A Black Queer Feminine | Poster, Samara J. Smith

Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship

By virtue, Beyonce’s visual album, “Lemonade" can be seen as a form of Black Feminist theorizing as she creates images of the feminine along a personal narrative backdrop of infidelity and healing. To delegitimize controlling images of Black femininity, I will investigate how forms of the Haitian Vodou Lwa Ezili appear in the visual to problematize feminine constructions. Thus, this project aims to confront existing literature that either imposes external definitions of Black femininity or centers these images in its critique. I will take a triangular approach to trace how and where Iwa Ezili appears in Lemonade. By using Jennifer …

Examining The Evidence Base For Burnout, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Schonfeld Nov 2023

Examining The Evidence Base For Burnout, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Burnout has elicited growing interest among occupational health specialists in recent decades. Since 2019, the World Health Organization has characterized burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic, unmanageable workplace stress. Accordingly, three symptoms define the entity: (i) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; (ii) increased mental distance from one’s job or feelings of negativism or cynicism towards one’s job; and (iii) a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. We call into question the definition of burnout embodied in the Maslach Burnout Inventory and incorporated into the ICD-11. We draw stakeholders’ attention to the fact that burnout’s symptoms and etiology …

Behavioral Science Interventions Could Increase Snap Comprehension And Awareness Among Military Families, Colleen Heflin, Hannah Patnaik, Leonard M. Lopoo, Siobhan O'Keefe

Center for Policy Research

Food insecurity is more common among military families than the general population, and the transition from active service to civilian life is a time of heightened risk. The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) is designed to support food security among low-income families. Many eligible military and veteran families do not enroll in SNAP due to a lack of information, stigma, and administrative barriers. This brief highlights findings from a survey experiment conducted in 2022 and 2023 to assess how small changes to SNAP informational flyers, such as simplifying information provided about SNAP, highlighting that other veterans use SNAP, and emphasizing …

Advocacy Spotlight: Important: State Issues Changes To Delegation Of Duties Rules, Neema Katibai Jd Nov 2023

Advocacy Spotlight: Important: State Issues Changes To Delegation Of Duties Rules, Neema Katibai Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Michigan Board of Dentistry has introduced changes to the rules governing the delegation of duties to dental auxiliaries, including the reclassification of "dental assistants" (those not formally trained or licensed) as "unregistered dental auxiliaries" (UDAs). The classification Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) remains. Changes involve the supervision levels for specific tasks and guiding training UDAs for orthodontic duties. Notable changes include allowing UDAs to perform certain orthodontic tasks and expanding their scope of work to include duties such as taking impressions, polishing, and providing nutritional counseling. Dental professionals should know these changes and the supervision required for delegation to UDAs …

Attention Bias To Climate Change Images Following Emotional Inducements Of Pride And Guilt, Caleb W. Coughtry-Carpenter Nov 2023

Attention Bias To Climate Change Images Following Emotional Inducements Of Pride And Guilt, Caleb W. Coughtry-Carpenter

All NMU Master's Theses

Climate change is the most important issue facing modern day humans, and the solutions are not developing at a quick enough rate. In many cases, human-derived climate effects have crossed the threshold to becoming irreversible, and, as we remain inactive, are continuing to worsen as mitigating steps are not taken. Some of the most devastating effects facing humans include rising sea levels that threaten to flood coastal regions, and heatwaves of heightened intensity which threaten access to potable water and loss of food crops. Humans are not the only victims of climate change. Ecosystems are also greatly threatened by climate …

Students' Attitudes Towards Animals Influences Youth Development Constructs Based On Interactions With Different Animal Species Prior To College, Allison K. Pachunka Nov 2023

Students' Attitudes Towards Animals Influences Youth Development Constructs Based On Interactions With Different Animal Species Prior To College, Allison K. Pachunka

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Human-animal interactions (HAI) are commonplace in society and play a consequential role in a variety of situations such as companion animal ownership, agriculture, or youth programs such as 4-H or FFA. Interacting with animals has been shown to provide developmental benefits to children. Positive youth development (PYD), measured by the Five Cs Model, is a framework that focuses on fostering youth’s potential through positive activities which has been studied specifically in 4-H. However, this framework has not been applied to other organizations such as the National FFA Organization (FFA) or to other young adults with less formal interactions with animals. …

Students' Perceptions Of Professional Short-Messaging Education In Undergraduate Courses, Seth S. Frei, Allison M. Alford, Ashly B. Smith

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

The popularity of short-messaging formats, like text and chat, is on the rise in the workplace with many employees preferring this style over long-form options like email. While many businesses expect employees to communicate using short messages, students may be ill-equipped to effectively use these methods due to a lack of formal training. This study sets out to understand students’ experience, confidence, and education related to professional short messaging. Results indicate a correlation between confidence and experience levels in writing text and chat messages. Further, the participants who indicated they had training on writing short messages, indicated they learned it …

Legal Human Rights And Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition V Tanzania, Application No. 039/2020 (13 June 2023), Kafula M. Kasonde

SAIPAR Case Review

This judgement is a milestone in the Tanzanian jurisprudence as it subjects the Tanzanian legal system to scrutiny by an international court with regards to a provision in a domestic statute providing for non-bailable offenses. The legal system of Tanzania overlooked an opportunity in this case to examine the compatibility of national legislations with international human rights standards. This judgement highlights the critical role of human rights non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and their efforts to challenge domestic laws that may infringe upon fundamental rights through emphasizing the need for alignment and adherence to international human rights standards.

SAIPAR Case Review

The decision by the Court of Appeal is a forward thinking one that deserves acclaim for its empathetic approach towards religious beliefs and and administering treatment in hospitals. This Judgement is significant to the Zambian jurisprudence as it underscores the paramountcy of patient autonomy and informed consent when administering medical treatment by healthcare providers. This judgement serves as a pivotal reference and precedence for the legal and ethical obligations of healthcare providers to respect the wishes and directives of their patients, even when those wishes are deeply rooted in religious beliefs or amounting to a loss of life, a breach …

Willard Mwiinga V The People Appeal No/167/2022 (24 August, 2023), Mwami Kabwabwa

SAIPAR Case Review

This case calls upon judges to move beyond a rigid application and recognition of gender based violence (GBV) laws thoughtfully to cases involving domestic violence, to protect women and girls. In this pivotal Judgement, the Court of Appeal missed a crucial chance to fulfill its duty to construe the law with an acute awareness of gender issues and the prevalent problem of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Acknowledging such issues in legal decisions is vital as it embeds gender sensitivity into the consciousness of both the legal framework and society at large, as seen through the judiciary’s lens. This acknowledgment is instrumental …

Sanat Limited V Shaileshukmar Suryakant Amin Caz Appeal No. 137 Of 2019, Clement Ngoma

SAIPAR Case Review

This Judgement demonstrates the importance of judicial interpretation of statutes through the Court of Appeal’s decision which was not solely based on one section of the Lands and Deeds Registry Act but the the Act as a whole thereby correcting and rectifying the lower court’s narrow and limited interpretation of the Statute. The judgement serves as a remainder of the courts’ role in protecting the rights of beneficial owners as well as honouring the original terms agreed by the parties involved against claims made by trustees who may seek to assert ownership contrary to the terms of the trust. Further, …

Librarian Residency Programs: A Vital Solution For Increasing Representation In Academic Libraries, Aisha Johnson Phd, Alexandra Brinson, Kayleah Brown, Karen Manning, Estella Richardson

Georgia Library Quarterly

According to ALA’s 2017 demographic study, the profession is nearly completely White while society consists of a variety of cultures and communities. The lack of representation is a matter of exposure, strategic and diverse recruitment, and retention of professionals of color as well as those belonging to marginalized communities. Recruitment and retention are key, but we must recognize that retention is successful when focused on a person's development through mentoring, coaching, and other targeted measures like residency programs. This paper discusses the benefits of residency and fellowship programs as a retention tool when implemented with intention and authenticity.
