Computers In Recreation And Sport Management, Julia Carr, Sue Colyer Jan 1990

Computers In Recreation And Sport Management, Julia Carr, Sue Colyer

Research outputs pre 2011

This study was undertaken by the Department of Recreation Studies to investigate computer utilisation by sport and recreation professionals in not-for-profit sporting and recreation organisations in Western Australia, with a view to identifying the preparation needed by recreation students.

One hundred and fifty (150) selected organisations from four generic groups (local government, sports adminstration organisations, recreation organisations for special populations and community recreation organisations) were surveyed.

The results revealed a broad range of computer applications, predominantly for administration. The most common applications by all four groups were word processing, database management and financial management. Financial management systems were used more …

Introductory Notes On Australian Social Gerontology : Edited Transcript Of A Guest Lecture For The Unit "Human Development", Delivered At Claremont Campus On Tuesday, 29 May 1990, David Wiles

Research outputs pre 2011

In a 'greying' Australia demographic realities should be articulated clearly so as to meet the challenges of the future. The aged population will 'peak' in 2021 A.D., and there is an increasing social awareness of this population trend. While the causes of longevity remain to be established, the improvement of individual life expectancy means that many seniors will spend decades in 'retirement'. Women, those of non- English speaking backgrounds, and aboriginals are sections of the aged population having special prob+ems. Comparative social policy, however, suggests that the future funding of aged care is not problematical, though national commitment is required. …

Distancing As A Casual Factor In The Development Of /0/ And /X/ In Spanish, David Eddington Jan 1990

Distancing As A Casual Factor In The Development Of /0/ And /X/ In Spanish, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

The evolution of the Spanish sibilant system has been an object of study since the late nineteenth century. Since that time, a myriad of books and articles have been published on the subject whose major focus has been to determine the exact nature of the sibilant changes and the chronology of each change. As is the case in most historical work, the question of why phonological systems evolve usually takes on only secondary importance. Among those theories proposed in order to explain why phonetic changes occur is the functionalist idea that there needs to be an optimal acoustic distance between …

The Cognitive Ecology Of Problem Solving, Alan Hartley Jan 1990

The Cognitive Ecology Of Problem Solving, Alan Hartley

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

This chapter examines the first goal: understanding real-world problem solving. It is particularly concerned with issues of representativeness and what has been called ecological validity. In addition, because there is considerable evidence that there are differences across the adult life span in solving problems, as reviewed by Botwinick (1978), Giambra and Arenberg (1980), and Rabbitt (1977), it will be important to ask whether or not age is an important qualifier to the conclusions that are reached. The first section discusses the problems people actually face and reviews the paradigms used in scientific investigations to represent problems, including studies of age …

A New Early Devonian Spinose Phacopid Trilobite From Limekilns, New South Wales: Morphology, Affinities, Taphonomy And Palaeoenvironment, Anthony J. Wright, W Haas Jan 1990

A New Early Devonian Spinose Phacopid Trilobite From Limekilns, New South Wales: Morphology, Affinities, Taphonomy And Palaeoenvironment, Anthony J. Wright, W Haas

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Paciphacops (Paciphacops) crawfordae n.sp. is a distinctive spinose phacopid trilobite of late Pragian (Early Devonian) age from the deepwater, dysaerobic Rosedale Shale, Limekilns district, New South Wales. It is characterised by short occipital, genal and intergenal spines on the cephalon, and short thoracic spines on the axial rings and pleurae. Various combinations of such spines are developed in P. (Paciphacops) serratus Foerste (Lochkovian, New South Wales; Ludlovian, Kazakhstan?) and P. (Paciphacops) claviger Haas (Siegenian, Nevada), but the three species cannot be shown to be related.

Some Improvements To Turner's Algorithm For Bracket Abstraction, Martin W. Bunder

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A computer handles A-terms more easily if these are translated into combinatory terms. This translation process is called bracket abstraction. The simplest abstraction algorithm-the (fab) algorithm of Curry (see Curry and Feys [6])-is lengthy to implement and produces combinatory terms that increase rapidly in length as the number of variables to be abstracted increases.

Bibliography Of The Natural And Cultural History Of The Loess Hills Of Iowa, Dean M. Roosa, Darwin D. Koenig Jan 1990

Bibliography Of The Natural And Cultural History Of The Loess Hills Of Iowa, Dean M. Roosa, Darwin D. Koenig

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A bibliography of literature on Iowa's Loess Hills includes references containing information on the cultural or natural history of chis western Iowa landform region. The bibliography is divided into six parts: general, archaeological, botanical, geological, historical, and zoological. Annotations are included only where necessary to clarify contents. Because of their rugged topography, the Loess Hills of western Iowa have resisted large-scale conversion to agriculture. This has permitted noteworthy persistence of native prairies and woodlands, along with their associated species. This bibliography complements two special issues of the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science devoted to Iowa's Loess Hills.

Climate Change And The Potential Impact On The Soil Resource, J. L. Hatfield Jan 1990

Climate Change And The Potential Impact On The Soil Resource, J. L. Hatfield

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Climatic change will lead to changes in the carbon dioxide C02, temperature, and precipitation. There have been many predictions of the effect of climatic change on plant growth but none on the soil parameters or water use. To fully understand the implications on soil management from climate change the expected changes in soil temperature, water use, and water and nutrient use efficiency need quantification.

The Effect Of Harvesting On Macrophyte Regrowth And Water Quality In Ladue Reservoir, Ohio, G. Dennis Cooke, Angela B. Martin, Robert E. Carlson Jan 1990

The Effect Of Harvesting On Macrophyte Regrowth And Water Quality In Ladue Reservoir, Ohio, G. Dennis Cooke, Angela B. Martin, Robert E. Carlson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Two experiments in a bay of LaDue Reservoir (Geauga Co., northeastern Ohio) during summer, 1985 demonstrated that removal of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) root crowns with an aquatic weed harvester retarded plant regrowth to quantities well below nuisance levels for 28 days. Nearly summer-long control was achieved following a "touch-up" harvest on day 42. In contrast, the harvester was used in this bay in 1982 to "mow" milfoil, leaving intact "stumps." The mowed plants regrew to preharvest and control area biomass levels within 23 days. The difference in plant regrowth between these two methods strongly suggests that user dissatisfaction …

An Interpretation Of Hustedt's Terms "Schattenlinie", "Perlenreihe" And "Hocker" Using Specimens Of The Cyclotella Radiosa-Complex, C. Distinguenda, Hust., And C. Cyclopuncta Nov. Sp., Hannelore Hakansson, John R. Carter Jan 1990

Carter

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

With the help of light- and scanning electron micrographs HUSTEDT'S terms "Schattenlinie", "Perlenrcihe", and "Hocker" are explained using specimens in the Cydotella radiosa complex, and C. distinguenda HUST. The complicated history of C. operculata (AG.) KUTZ., published elsewhere, has shown that C. distinguenda HUST. is the correct name to be used for this taxon. In this connection the new nomenclatural combination C. distinguenda var. unipunctata nov. comb. is proposed.

Morphological differences are discussed and the possibility of different "unipunctata" species is shown. Distinct morphological features found indicate the necessiry to describe a new species: C. cyclopuncta nov. sp. rather than …
