Clayton Yeutter Secretary Of Agriculture Before The Senate Committee On Agriculture, Nutrition, And Forestry February 7, 1990, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee, I welcome the invitation to appear today to discuss the 1990 Farm Bill. The making of farm policy in 1990 will be truly historic. The road that we take over the coming months will be vital to u.s. farmers, the American public, and, in fact, the world. As you know, we have been working very hard at the USDA and within the Administration for many months to develop proposals that we believe will best serve our nation's food and fiber industries and all Americans. Yesterday we unveiled our ideas. This morning, I would …

Commonwealth's Choice: Results From The Massachusetts Public Opinion Survey, Barry Bluestone, Mary Ellen Colten, Thomas Ferguson

John M. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies Publications

From November 11 through December 4, 1989, the Center for Survey Research of the University of Massachusetts at Boston conducted a random digit dial survey of adults aged 18 and over in Massachusetts. A total of 423 individuals were interviewed in a sampling procedure that yielded a 63 percent response rate. In contrast to most media polls, this survey was carried out over a period of four weeks permitting extensive efforts at locating and interviewing difficult-to-reach, reluctant, or less interested respondents. This survey is likely to be more representative of the true population of Massachusetts than most state polls.

Critique [Of Thinking Woman's Children And The Bomb By Helen Jaskoski], G. Lynn Nelson

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

These days, most literary criticism, like the world view that spawned it, is obsolete, a luxury we can no longer afford. Too much of it is esoteric, egotistical, and trivial. While the world balances on the edge of annihilation, we count semicolons on our computers.

"Black" Or "African American"; What's In A Name?, Johnny Washington

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Within the United States the African American[1] community has again reverted to the problem of ethnic identity and the question, "Who are we -- 'Blacks' or 'African Americans'?" is now being debated. It will be recalled that a similar debate was carried on in the 1960s, and the history of this identity question extends to the 1920s and beyond.

Critique [Of "What Shall I Give My Children?" The Role Of The Mentor In Gloria Naylor's The Women Of Brewster Place And Paule Marshall's Praisesong For The Widow By Linda Wells], Suzanne Stutman

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In her article "'What Shall I Give My Children?': The Role of the Mentor in Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place and Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow," Wells focuses upon the woman's role as mentor in various works of modem African American women writers. In using Gwendolyn Brooks' poem as the cornerstone of her study, she establishes the sense of anguish and frustration faced by the mother who seeks to give to her children a sense of worth and self-esteem in a society which automatically disenfranchises them. She poses an important question -- one that goes beyond the …

[Review Of] Shelia Chamovitz. Skokie: Rights Or Wrong, Elizabeth Mcneil Jan 1990

[Review Of] Shelia Chamovitz. Skokie: Rights Or Wrong, Elizabeth Mcneil

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Skokie is an Illinois suburb in which about 7,000 Jewish survivors of the European Holocaust live. In 1978, The National Socialist Party of American [America] (NSPA) (known until 1970 as the American Nazi Party) wanted to demonstrate in Skokie, to publically speak about the NSPA's ultimate purpose, which is to "create an all-white [non-Jewish] America in our lifetime," via legal methods "hopefully." The NSPA's immediate goal in marching in Skokie was "to dramatize the fact that there is no free speech for National Socialists ... a pressure move in order to force the system, the courts ... to give [the …

[Review Of] John F. Crawford, William Balassi, And Annie O. Eysturoy, Eds. This Is About Vision: Interviews With Southwestern Writers, Jennifer L. Scoutten

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This Is About Vision: Interviews with Southwestern Writers is a compilation of sixteen interviews. The writers are ordered chronologically by date of birth, and there is a strong sense of movement from older ideas about the Southwest represented by authors such as Frank Waters to the development of new cultural values and ideas with younger writers like Rudolfo Anaya and Luci Tapahonso. Each of the interviews is prefaced by biographic information as well as a selected bibliography. Crawford's introduction to the book is thorough and provides a "map" or guide to the thematic development of the interviews.

[Review Of] Peter Manuel. Popular Musics Of The Non- Western World, Harriet Ottenheimer Jan 1990

[Review Of] Peter Manuel. Popular Musics Of The Non- Western World, Harriet Ottenheimer

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This is a wide-ranging, insightful and often fascinating survey of popular ethnic musics of the world. The title is perhaps a bit misleading. By "western" Manuel clearly means modern Northern European and those parts of the Americas most directly influenced by the Anglo-Germanic traditions of Northern Europe. This is certainly a current and popular connotation for the word, and most readers should have no trouble with Manuel's use of the term in this way. Readers who are used to thinking of "western" as comprising Europe, Africa and the Americas, however, will have to make adjustments. Manuel excludes consideration of "westernized" …

[Review Of] Clara E. Rodriguez. Puerto Ricans Born In The U.S.A, Jesse M. Vazquez Jan 1990

[Review Of] Clara E. Rodriguez. Puerto Ricans Born In The U.S.A, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

It may be apocryphal by now, but it has often been said, and it is repeated again by Rodriguez in her most recent contribution to the literature that "Puerto Ricans still hold the dubious distinction of being among the most researched and least understood people in the United States, if not the world. "Rodriguez's use of the existing voluminous literature on the Puerto Rican experience certainly reinforces this widely held belief. Puerto Ricans are the second largest Latino ethnic group in the United States, and in New York City one out of every eight people is Puerto Rican. This is …

[Review Of] Sabine R. Ulibarri. El Condor And Other Stories, Carl R. Shirley Jan 1990

[Review Of] Sabine R. Ulibarri. El Condor And Other Stories, Carl R. Shirley

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume continues in the same vein as Governor Glu Glu, but Ulibarri here delves even more deeply into the world of fantasy. Many of the eleven stories in El Condor are like sugar-coated medicine: the sweetness prepares the reader for the lesson which comes in the form of a moral at the end. "The Man Who Didn't Eat," for example, is a tale of the scientific creation of a man who is vegetable Frankenstein's monster, with parts taken from many plants. The creature in Ulibarri's story is benevolent; as a result of his superhuman effort to save his neighbors …

[Review Of] Allen L. Woll And Randall M. Miller. Ethnic And Racial Images In American Film And Television: Historical Essays And Bibliography, Angela M. S. Nelson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Allen Woll and Randall Miller in Ethnic and Racial Images in American Film and Television have compiled in one volume the writings about the images of ethnic and racial groups in American television and film. Woll and Miller state in their Introduction that the purpose of their book was to "attempt to unite the work (the nature and importance of mass media stereotypes and their effects on society) from a wide variety of disciplines, languages and fields of study in order to expand the vistas of scholarly research in this area." Ethnic and Racial Images is divided into twelve chapters, …

Mergers, Acquisitions And Their Relationship With Urban Hierarchy, Michael C. Carroll Jan 1990

Mergers, Acquisitions And Their Relationship With Urban Hierarchy, Michael C. Carroll

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This report analyzes the effects of merger and acquisition activity on urban hierarchy. This paper shows that firms from larger metropolitan areas are more often the predator in a merger and acquisition transaction. The larger the metropolitan area the stronger these tendencies. The analytical tool of logistic regression is used to calculate the log likelihoods and odds ratios. The paper concludes with an examination of the possible adverse complications resulting from the M&A trend.

Shopping For Schools, Betty Paiewonsky Kirk

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This report contains information about the implications of Ohio Senate Bill 140 which will go into effect in 1993. It contains comparisons of ten center city schools in the form of articles specifically directed at each of those cities. Parental choice will produce profound changes in school finance and hopefully will improve the quality of educational outputs. Highlighted is the need for better information that the currently designed system will be unable to fulfill. The goal of this report is to delineate the issues for both parents and policy makers.

Ncr Personal Computer Forecast, Sharon Renee Clark Jan 1990

Ncr Personal Computer Forecast, Sharon Renee Clark

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Based on my forecasting model, NCR Corporation's domestic Personal Computer (PC) quarterly revenue can be expected to increase to between fifty-eight million dollars and seventy- three million. These quarterly forecasts may overestimate revenue during the expected coming recession since data was not available during such a similar time period in the past. All of the data is from 1984 to the present - a time in which the U.S. economy enjoyed continued slow growth. Although the quarterly forecasts are derived from a reliable econometric model, the uncertainty of the Gulf Crisis and coming recession are not represented in these statistical …

The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis Jan 1990

The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The countries of Sub-Saharan Africa have experienced both poor economic performance and substantial political instability since their independence. There have been numerous studies investigating the possible relationship between political instability and economic growth. The common approach to investigating this relationship is to measure the effect of economic growth on the probability of political instability. This paper takes the opposite approach by investigating the effects of political instability on economic growth. We believe that political instability disrupts the economic system causing a reduction in growth. We measure this effect using regression analysis to estimate two models we have developed. The first …

European Unemployment And Economic Trends: 1985-89, Ramez M. Fihani Jan 1990

European Unemployment And Economic Trends: 1985-89, Ramez M. Fihani

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This report analyzes the macroeconomic conditions for 15 OECD European countries for the second half of the 1980's. The study methodology begins by comparing Europe's aggregate economic performance against that of the United States and Japan for the 1985-89 period. A concentrated effort is made to analyze and explain the factors causing the comparatively high European unemployment rates. The report also reviews various political and economic sources to document the recent trends of 1985, 1986, and three quarters of 1987 for each of the following 15 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, …

Testosterone, Social Class, And Antisocial Behavior In A Sample Of 4,462 Men, Robin D. Morris, James M. Dabbs Jan 1990

Testosterone, Social Class, And Antisocial Behavior In A Sample Of 4,462 Men, Robin D. Morris, James M. Dabbs

Psychology Faculty Publications

Two hypotheses have been offered to explain the relation between testosterone and antisocial behavior in delinquent and criminal populations. One is that testosterone leads directly to antisocial behavior. The other is that a constellation of dominance, competitiveness, and sensation seeking associated with testosterone leads to either antisocial or prosocial behavior, depending upon an individual's resources and background. Analysis of archival data from 4,462 U.S military veterans supported the first hypothesis: Testosterone was correlated with a variety of antisocial behaviors among all individuals, however, socioeconomic status (SES) Proved to be a moderating variable, with weaker Testosterone-behavior relationships among high SES subjects.

Altered States: A Comparison Of Separation Of Powers In The United States And In The United Kingdom, James G. Wilson Jan 1990

Altered States: A Comparison Of Separation Of Powers In The United States And In The United Kingdom, James G. Wilson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This Article initially will compare the United States Constitution and the British constitution both to evaluate Young, Morrison, and Misretta, and to develop a sounder approach to all structural issues. Comparative constitutional law provides some of the "experience" needed to decide abstract structural cases. Predicting the reverberations of a proposed change within a system will be easier if one has studied how similar alterations have affected similar organizations. The British constitution is particularly germane because it was a model for the American Constitution. The two countries have a shared legal tradition and frequently generate similar positive law. The British constitution …

Psyche's Muse: The Role Of Metaphor In Psychology, David E. Leary Jan 1990

Psyche's Muse: The Role Of Metaphor In Psychology, David E. Leary

Psychology Faculty Publications

Ever since Aristotle asserted that "the greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor," numerous scholars have studied and written about the nature and functions of metaphor.1 The vast majority of these scholars have focused on metaphor as a distinctive use of language that has various rhetorical functions.2 Recently, however, some scholars have begun to dig deeper into the topic, investigating the possibility that metaphor is not only a form of speech, but more fundamentally a form of thought, having basic epistemological functions.3 With regard to science, for instance, such scholars as Arbib and …
