The Child's Understanding Of Correspondence Relations, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 1990

The Child's Understanding Of Correspondence Relations, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

A number of quantitative comparison tasks were designed to tap knowledge of injective and suijective correspondences, one-directiona] compositions (greater + greater yields greater), countervailing compositions (greater + lesser yields ?), and length-density relations in 4- to 7-year-olds. The results indicated that performance on the comparison tasks was related to performance on a number conservation test as well as to age. Nonconservers performed at better than chance levels on tasks that tapped an elementary knowledge of injective and surjective correspondences; concrete-operational children, however, tended perform better on all tasks. Uncorrected and disattenuated correlation coefficients revealed considerable consistency across measures. Factor analyses, …

The "L-Word": A Short History Of Liberalism, Terence Ball, Richard Dagger Jan 1990

The "L-Word": A Short History Of Liberalism, Terence Ball, Richard Dagger

Political Science Faculty Publications

Hence the question: Are these good or bad times for liberalism? To answer, we shall need a broader perspective than a survey of contemporary developments can provide. We shall need to look back, that is, to see what liberalism was in order to understand what it has become. Only then can we assess its current condition and prospects-and appreciate how politics in the United States is largely an intramural debate between different wings of liberalism.

Appendix probably to the Western Kentucky University's Athletic Program: Financial Burden or Boon? A Reply. The unidentified authors review the data used in Western Kentucky University's Athletic Program: Financial Burden or Boon?. They state, "we describe and evaluate the PBG model, which poorly describes the data and fails to identify the major factor in Western's enrollment changes. Further statistical analysis of the same data provides a model that better describes the data, identifies the major factor relating to WKU enrollment and indicates that WKU sports performance has no significant effect on enrollment."

Human Sexuality Programs In Catholic Secondary Schools In The 80'S, Maria Teresa Klein Edd

Dissertations

Human sexuality programs, or sex education programs, have been a controversial issue for many years. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of human sexuality programs within Catholic secondary schools. This study investigated the effect of comprehensive or non-comprehensive sexuality programs upon students' Positive Sexual Attitudes, awareness of Catholic Church Teachings, integration of Catholic Church Values, integration of current Social Values, and Biological Knowledge. Comprehensive human sexuality programs were defined as those containing three or more full semesters of classes related to sex and sexuality. Soviet National Security Decision Making, Kurt M. Campbell, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 1990

Soviet National Security Decision Making, Kurt M. Campbell, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

Winston Churchill's characterization of the Soviet Union as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma may overstate Western understanding of the USSR's national security decision-making. The evidence in this domain is sparse, and what we do have is incomplete. Indeed, the Soviets have taken extraordinary steps to maintain the black box that shields how and why their decisions are made. With these caveats in mind, knowledge of Soviet decision-making can be summed up in a few general statements. First, the Soviet leadership is an integrated political-military body, where political authority is dominant, but where the professional military retains …
