Basic Communication Course Annual

This volume is the result of tremendous dedication and the ongoing belief in the need to provide a publication outlet for research and information dedicated solely to the basic communication course. Many people have contributed their time, energy and talents to this volume. I first want to recognize the excellent work provided by the Editorial Board who worked to meet my deadlines and provide useful feedback to the authors to help them revise and/or resubmit their research. Without excellent cooperation from each of the reviewers, the annual would not be complete.

The Future Of The Basic Course, Judy C. Pearson, Paul E. Nelson Jan 1990

The Future Of The Basic Course, Judy C. Pearson, Paul E. Nelson

Basic Communication Course Annual

This article recommends some changes that should occur in the basic course. The prescriptions are based on four notions: the course must include accurate information; it should be inclusive in nature; it must be responsive to our contemporary world and to our students' current and future communicative needs; and it must provide a unique contribution to our students' education. The authors suggest that the course has not been sufficiently attentive to accuracy, inclusiveness, responsiveness and uniqueness; furthermore, contemporary changes require increased vigilance in these areas.

The literature relevant to basic course assessments are reviewed, and suggestions for basic course programs undertaking this type of evaluation are discussed.

A Communication Based Model Of Friendship For The Interpersonal Communication Course, Rod Troester

Basic Communication Course Annual

This paper presents a model of friendship drawn from the friendship research of S.W. Duck and the management approach to interpersonal communication of S.A. Deetz and S.L. Stevenson.

Duck's research is briefly summarized and offered as a theoretical and conceptual foundation for understanding the psychological or cognitive dimensions of friendship. The Management Approach to interpersonal communication, researched by Deetz and Stevenson, is developed as a means for understanding the behavior dimensions associated with the conduct of friendship.

These complementing approaches are integrated using the general systems notions of structure, function and evolution. The approaches and model are discussed as they …

Cd Rom And Access To Information In Academic Libraries, Carole Alcock Jan 1990

Cd Rom And Access To Information In Academic Libraries, Carole Alcock

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

CD-Rom databases have been hailed as a means of avoiding the problems inherent in budgeting for online services, and hence also the need to charge for searching. However, some libraries are already considering charging for their use. This is a retrograde step. The University of Wollongong library has purchased a number of CD-ROM databases which have been enthusiastically received by both students and academic staff. At present, we do not charge for this service. Initial indications are that the introduction of CD-Rom databases has meant a slump in demand for online searches. Clearly, CD-Rom and online services could be complementary, …

Cd Roms At The University Of Wollongong: A Case Study, Craig Grimson Jan 1990

Cd Roms At The University Of Wollongong: A Case Study, Craig Grimson

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The University of Wollongong Library purchased 21 bibliographic databases on CD-ROM during 1988, 1989 and 1990 covering the disciplines of business, psychology, medicine, geography, sociology, education, science, nursing, engineering, mathematics and occupational health and safety. The databases are available for use by all students and staff, and their use is continuing to be evaluated. The introduction of the CD··ROM service has had significant implications for library users and staff, e. g . the number of online searches has reduced, the use of serial literature has increased, the use of hard copy indexes has changed and staff involvement in the training …

The Relationship Between Acculturation Level Of Mexican-American Parents And Coping With Their Chronically Ill Children, Nancy Ellen Tena Jan 1990

The Relationship Between Acculturation Level Of Mexican-American Parents And Coping With Their Chronically Ill Children, Nancy Ellen Tena

Masters Theses

This investigation focused on 19 Mexican-American families with neurologically impaired children to determine to what extent they selected particular coping patterns in relationship to their level of acculturation to the Anglo-American culture. Using the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican-Americans (ARSMA), the families were categorized according to acculturation level (low, bicultural, and high). The families identified coping patterns (Family Support, Social Support, and Medical Support) which were helpful to them by completing the Coping Health Inventory for Parents (CHIP). Only one statistically significant relationship between acculturation level of these families and extent of their use of coping patterns was found: high …

Tax Structure And Tax Compliance, James Alm, Roy W. Bahl, Matthew N. Murray Jan 1990

Tax Structure And Tax Compliance, James Alm, Roy W. Bahl, Matthew N. Murray

ECON Publications

A model of individual tax compliance behavior, including evasion and avoidance, is developed and estimated. The model recognizes the importance of marginal income tax rates, payroll tax contributions and benefits, and the probability of detection and the penalty on unpaid taxes. Share equations for avoidance, evasion and reported income are estimated using individual-level data. The estimation results indicate that the tax base rises with higher benefits for payroll tax contributions and falls with higher marginal tax rates; the base also falls with more severe penalties and more certain detection of evasion as individuals substitute towards avoidance income.

Central-Local Fiscal Relations In China, Roy W. Bahl Jan 1990

Central-Local Fiscal Relations In China, Roy W. Bahl

ECON Publications

The tax structure and the system of intergovernmental fiscal relations are inextricably linked in the Chinese fiscal system. The laws of taxation and the powers and responsibilities of the various levels of government are laid down by the central government, and subnational governments are responsible for tax administration, share in revenue collections, and have a substantial amount of latitude in awarding tax preferences to enterprises. The development of the system--perhaps better characterized as a series of arrangements--of tax administration and central/local relations has given provincial and local governments increasing freedom to alter the fiscal system to meet their own objectives. …

Central-Local Fiscal Relations And Revenue Sharing, Roy W. Bahl

ECON Publications

This annex is about the possibilities and needs for reforming the intergovernmental fiscal system to support the general economic reform in China. In the first section, the norms for deciding on the right amount of fiscal-decentralization and the right structure of local finances are discussed, and the international experience is reviewed. A brief description of the present system of local financing in China, some evidence about its performance, and a review of the problems encountered follows. The final section of the annex presents the broad outlines of the reform options.

Gestational Age Reporting And Preterm Delivery, Greg R. Alexander, Mark E. Tompkins, Donald A. Cornely

Faculty Publications

This study examines recent trends in the reporting completeness and quality of gestational age estimates derived from the date of the last normal menses (DLNM) as reported in South Carolina vital records from 1974 to 1985. Noteworthy improvements in the completeness of reporting emerged during this period with a decline from 31.1 percent missing information in 1974 to 6.6 percent missing in 1985. Completeness of reporting and strategies for imputing values for missing data were analyzed for their impact on the calculation of the percentage of pr?term live births. The results indicate that the underreporting of gestational age can lead …
