The Slowdown In Soviet Defense Expenditures: Comment, Abdur Chowdhury, Josef C. Brada, Ronald L. Graves Oct 1990

The Slowdown In Soviet Defense Expenditures: Comment, Abdur Chowdhury, Josef C. Brada, Ronald L. Graves

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The reason for the apparently opposing results in Brada and Graves' (1988) attempt to explain the reasons for the slowdown in USSR defense expenditures in the mid-1970s is that their analysis suffers from a serious serial correlation problem. The majority of the regressions display Durbin-Watson statistics that reject the null hypothesis of no autocorrelation. A reestimation of their results, after correcting for serial correlation, changes some of their major conclusions regarding the factors influencing Soviet defense spending. The corrected results indicate that no structural break occurred in the mid-1970s. These results suggest that there has been no change in Soviet …

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson Oct 1990

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Studies on controlling the thermal distortion of large space antennae have generally investigated a single orbital position and have optimized actuator locations based on minimizing the RMS surface deviation from the original parabolic shape. One study showed the benefits of directly using far zone electric field characteristics as the performance measure; but, this approach resulted in a nonlinear programming problem. The objective of the current study is to develop an approach to designing a control system that (1) recognizes the time dependence of the distortion and (2) controls variables that are directly related to far field performance in a quadratic …

The Hong Kong Jury: A Microcosm Of Society?, Peter Duff, Mark Findlay, Carla Howarth Oct 1990

The Hong Kong Jury: A Microcosm Of Society?, Peter Duff, Mark Findlay, Carla Howarth

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The claim that the jury is a randomly chosen and representative sample of community is an important part of the ideology which currently underpins the institution. Supporters of the jury argue that both its impartiality and its independence from the State are bolstered by the fact that it represents a randomly selected cross-section of the populace. In most common law jurisdictions where the jury operates, various steps have been taken over recent years in order preserve and strengthen the perception of the jury as a "microcosm of democratic society". For example, in England the property qualification for jurors was removed …

An Assessment Of The Utilization Of Permanent And Temporary Classrooms As It Relates To Cost And Efficiency In Selected School Divisions, E. Carlton Bowyer Oct 1990

An Assessment Of The Utilization Of Permanent And Temporary Classrooms As It Relates To Cost And Efficiency In Selected School Divisions, E. Carlton Bowyer

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

In the mid-1900s there were over eighty thousand public school buildings in the United States housing approximately thirty-nine million pupils. Many were constructed thirty or forty years earlier and have approached the end of their useful life without requiring major retrofitting or replacement. Rising construction costs prompt school systems to investigate alternative means of housing rapidly growing student populations. This study traced the historical background of the school facility and the development of school construction relative to the function of education.

The focus of this study was to ascertain the current use of temporary and permanent housing in the fifty …
