A Descriptive Study Of The Functional Components Of Browsing., Barbara H. Kwasnik
A Descriptive Study Of The Functional Components Of Browsing., Barbara H. Kwasnik
Barbara H. Kwasnik
The paper describes a descriptive study of the functional components of browsing, which is viewed as the strategic and adaptive technique that people use to search, scan, navigate through, skim, sample, and explore information systems. Data on browsing is collected from thirty participants -- ten each in three browsing formats: print, command-driven computer version, and hypertext window-environment version. Data collection is by means of several techniques: the collection of thinking-out-loud, task-concurrent protocols; open-question interviews during the task; observation; and video and sound recording. The aim of analysis is to describe functions of browsing such as: orientation, place-marking, transition, comparison, identification, …

Urban Native American Educational Attitudes: Impact Of Educational Background And Childhood Residency, Paul Adair Wood
Urban Native American Educational Attitudes: Impact Of Educational Background And Childhood Residency, Paul Adair Wood
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to study the relationship between educational attitudes and certain background features of Native Americans, in particular, where they were raised and what type of school they attended. The sample used consisted of 120 completed mail out-mail back surveys that were used primarily as a Needs Assessment for the Portland Indian Health clinic. The sample was randomly selected from the Portland Indian Health Clinic client/patient mailing list. The findings of this thesis indicate that the attitudes of Native Americans toward education in general are positive. The findings also indicate that older Native Americans who experienced …
Pat Williams Magician- St. Petersburg Giants - Nbc's Final Olympic Overkill, Richard C. Crepeau
Pat Williams Magician- St. Petersburg Giants - Nbc's Final Olympic Overkill, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
There is Magic. There is the Orlando Magic. And now there is the Magician. Pat Williams has clearly earned that title for his latest prestidigitation. I don't know anyone who thought that Williams could pull off the signing of Shaquille O'Neal prior to the deadline to match the offer sheet that Dallas had tendered to Stanley Roberts. Certainly the fact that Rich DeVoss was willing to shell out $40M to get the deal done, and then turn around and cough up another $15M of pocket change for Stanley, made Pat's job a little easier. But nonetheless, Pat Williams has achieved …

Soviet Pentecostal Refugees' Health And Their Religious Beliefs: An Exploratory Study, Dianne Fae Venable
Soviet Pentecostal Refugees' Health And Their Religious Beliefs: An Exploratory Study, Dianne Fae Venable
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explored the health practices and religious beliefs of the recent Soviet Pentecostal refugee population in the Portland, Oregon metro area. The methodology consisted of 25 in-depth interviews over a period of twelve months. Soviet Pentecostal refugees' health practices are influenced by their religious belief system which is Pentecostalism. The four primary factors that were found to have an affect on the refugees' health were lifestyle practices; coherence; or the meaning of suffering that religion provides; cohesiveness, or group belonging to the religious community, and world view provided by the underlying theology. The language barrier, distrust of outsiders, unfamiliarity …
The Supposed Universal Hospitality Of Lodges, Paul J. Rich
The Supposed Universal Hospitality Of Lodges, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
The important point about this contribution to an email list is the date, 1992. At the time, i was a research fellow at the University of Western Australia. In the years since, although there have been some changes, a large number of American Masonic organizations remain closed to black members. For example, it will be a very long time before one sees black leaders in a number of Southern states' Masonic bodies like the Shrine, Commandary, Eastern Star, and so on. In contrast one must add that certain jurisdictions such as Washington D.C. are integrated. But they grant recognition to …

Fiscal Impact Analysis: Applications And Usage In Ontario Municipalities, Jeffrey Celentano
Fiscal Impact Analysis: Applications And Usage In Ontario Municipalities, Jeffrey Celentano
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper examines the overall effectiveness of financial impact analysis (FIA) in local government based on a survey of 48 municipalities in Ontario with populations over 25,000. The findings reveal that despite the usefulness of FIA as an evaluative technique for municipal expenditures and revenues, it remains an unpopular tool for local government administrators in the province.

Crying Women: An Investigation Of The Lived Experience Of Women With And Without Cancer, Jean W. Hunt
Crying Women: An Investigation Of The Lived Experience Of Women With And Without Cancer, Jean W. Hunt
Doctoral Dissertations
This study attempts a more holistic perspective on cancer and the emotions than previous research which has tended to focus on either biological, psychological or social aspects individually. Crying was chosen as an aspect of human existence which simultaneously implicates biological, psychological and social aspects of being human. Over a 30-day period, frequency and intensity of crying behavior was tracked in a group of 27 women with cancer and 22 women without. Women in this study ranged from 20 to 69 years of age. Among women with cancer, fifteen were participants in therapist facilitated psychosocial support groups and eleven were …
A Qualitative Study Of First-Person Accounts Of Living With A Stutter, Peter James Columbus
A Qualitative Study Of First-Person Accounts Of Living With A Stutter, Peter James Columbus
Doctoral Dissertations
Eight males and four females who stutter were interviewed regarding their everyday life experiences with stuttering. The interviews were analyzed using a qualitative, intuitive/inductive method. Results revealed four major experimental themes: The Burden of Stuttering, Living with Difference, Living with Constraints, and Negotiating Life. The Burden of Stuttering theme refers to the participant's experience of the effort involved in discoordinated speech, contending with interactional order between self and other, effectively communicating spoken messages, and their uncertainty about the occurrence of stuttering and listener reactions to it. Living with Difference refers to experiences of dissimilarity between self and fluent speaking others; …
Loss Of Control, Attributions, And Helplessness In The Homeless, Shawn M. Burn
Loss Of Control, Attributions, And Helplessness In The Homeless, Shawn M. Burn
Psychology and Child Development
Control has emerged as an important psychological variable. The purpose of this project was to extend the concept of environmental control to the homeless shelter environment. Data from interviews conducted with residents of a homeless shelter supported the hypothesis that perceived loss of control over the shelter environment would be positively related to giving up on finding a home and employment. The hypothesis that the helplessness created by low control environments is consistent with the external, stable attributional style of “universal” helplessness was partially supported. Suggestions for future research are provided. Changes in the shelter environment are recommended for the …
