Language, Culture, And Violence In The Education Crisis Of U.S. Latino/ As: Two Courses For Intervention, Frances R. Aparicio, Christina Jose-Kampfner

Diversity

This article discusses the educational crisis of U.S. Latina/as and argues for the recognition and understanding of the extent to which institutional racism and violence are exercised by schools against this cultural sector. It then describes, as forms of intervention, a course which trainsfuture Spanish teachers in developing Latino cultural competence, and a community service learning course which offers tutoring and emotional support to at-risk middle school students.

Distance Education Library Services At Old Dominion University, Ann Pettingill, C. J. Jacob (Editor) Oct 1995

Distance Education Library Services At Old Dominion University, Ann Pettingill, C. J. Jacob (Editor)

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

Library resources and services are an essential part of a strong academic distance education program. Students at remote sites must have consistent access to library informational and research materials in order to develop and broaden their understanding of the ideas and research in their disciplines, to bring new ideas to their off-site classrooms, and to acquire and develop their skills in research. These resources are as essential to the remote student as to those on campus. However, students at remote sites may have no facilities comparable to those easily accessed by on campus students. Additionally, many remote site students face …

The Invention Of "African Rhythm", Kofi Agawu Oct 1995

The Invention Of "African Rhythm", Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

"African ryhthm" was invented in the 1950s when, thanks to pioneering research by the Reverend A. M. Jones, Alan Merriam, Gilbert Rouget, Erich von Hornbostel, and John Blacking, among others, "African music" was construed as an essentially rhythmic phenomenon. This essay reinvents "African rhythm" not by denying its own ideological construction but by engaging in an imaginary dialogue with earlier researchers in an effort to concretize that which was missing …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper addresses the development of a flexible low-cost automated scale highway (FLASH) laboratory which is intended to serve as a catalyst for accelerating the development of many intelligent vehicle highway system (IVHS) concepts. It also highlights the significance of the laboratory for the research, evaluation, and testing of automated highway system (AHS) configurations, architectures, designs and technologies. This laboratory, using small scale standardized vehicles will serve as a test bed for the economical development and evaluation of various hardware, software, and management systems before full scale testing and deployment. The laboratory will provide the capability to test day and …
