Chivalry In Pholcid Spiders Revisited, Julie A. Blanchong, Michael S. Summerfield, Mary A. Popson, Elizabeth M. Jakob Jan 1995

Chivalry In Pholcid Spiders Revisited, Julie A. Blanchong, Michael S. Summerfield, Mary A. Popson, Elizabeth M. Jakob

Julie A. Blanchong

Cohabiting pairs of adult spiders are likely to interact over prey, and the outcome of these interactions is likely to affect the reproductive success of both individuals. In two species of pholcid spiders, previous workers reported the occurrence of "chivalrous" behavior, in which males cede prey to females. We looked for the occurrence of chivalrous behavior in another pholcid spider, Holocnemus pluchei. Pairs of spiders were placed on a web and left overnight without prey. A housefly was then introduced onto the web equidistant from the spiders, and subsequent interactions were noted on audiotape. We found no evidence of chivalry …

Adam Smith’S Unnaturally Natural (Nonetheless Naturally Unnatural) Use Of The Word Natural, Spencer J. Pack Jan 1995

Adam Smith’S Unnaturally Natural (Nonetheless Naturally Unnatural) Use Of The Word Natural, Spencer J. Pack

Economics Faculty Publications

Natural and nature are complex words, fraught with ambiguity and contradiction. This paper does not attempt to give a complete account of Smith's use of these words. However, it does demonstrate that Smith did not necessarily approve of what he called "natural" or "nature". Economists and others who assume otherwise are in error. A study, analysis, and/or interpretation of Smith's work which depends upon this (at times unstated) assumption - that Smith necessarily approved of "nature" or the "natural"- needs to be read with great care; perhaps even incredulity.1

Klipsun Magazine, 1995, Volume 32, Issue 02 - January, Nick Davis

Klipsun Magazine

Welcome to the first issue of Klipsun for 1995. Unfortunately for me, this happens to be my last issue as editor-in-chief, but hey, what an issue to go out on! Both the writing and editorial staffs worked hard to produce this magazine and I think the quality definitely represents their level of commitment.

Klipsun is reaching new levels. With the writing staff digging deep for excellent stories and the editors endlessly tapping their creative juices, the magazine is only get ting better. I can only dream of where it can go in the future. The capabilities are there somewhere within …

A White Paper On Snake: The River Between Us, Andrus Center For Public Policy

Research and Reports

On November 28-29, 1995, the Andrus Center for Public Policy at Boise State University and two of Idaho’s most respected newspapers, the Idaho Falls Post Register and The Lewiston Morning Tribune, cooperated to convene a major policy and issues conference, focused on the Snake River. The conference was the capstone of a year of thoughtful and detailed reporting of the controversy and promise that always seem to flow with the current of Idaho’s greatest river. The two newspapers, one at each end of the Snake in Idaho, are to be congratulated for teaming up to explore the challenges of keeping …

A Comparison Of Protective Service Workers' Perceptions Of Ritual And Sexual Abuse In Children: An Exploratory Study, Cathleen A. Lewandowski Jan 1995

A Comparison Of Protective Service Workers' Perceptions Of Ritual And Sexual Abuse In Children: An Exploratory Study, Cathleen A. Lewandowski

Social Work Faculty Publications

This article compares protective service workers' perceptions of sexual abuse to their percepons of ritual abuse. Perceptual elements examined include the type of problem the abuse is for victims, difficulties encountered when investigating an allegation, treatment and assessment resources available in their communities, and a comparison of their definitions of sexual and ritual abuse. The professional community has not reached a consensus on the ritual abuse controversy. Perceptions found in the literature range from the presentation of ritual abuse as a serious social problem that is distinctly different from sexual abuse to a consideration of the ritual abuse phenomenon as …

[Review Of] Philip S. Foner And Daniel Rosenberg , Eds. Racism, Dissent, And Asian Americans From 1850 To The Present: A Documentary History, Russell Endo Jan 1995

[Review Of] Philip S. Foner And Daniel Rosenberg , Eds. Racism, Dissent, And Asian Americans From 1850 To The Present: A Documentary History, Russell Endo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Numerous historical studies discuss racism against Asian Americans as well as their resistance to racist policies, practices, and thought. While this scholarship correctly stresses the predominance of racism, it contains passing references to non-Asian individuals and organizations who supported better treatment and the rights of Asians. Foner and Rosenberg argue that these small numbers of supporters were dissenters from prevailing anti-Asian racism and that they deserve greater attention because they represent the existence of more than one perspective of Asian Americans.

The Box Ni Group Of Naranjal, And Early Architecture Of The Maya Lowlands, Jennifer P. Mathews Jan 1995

The Box Ni Group Of Naranjal, And Early Architecture Of The Maya Lowlands, Jennifer P. Mathews

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

The distinctive Early Classic megalithic style of the northern Maya Lowlands did not exist in isolation, but rather shared a number of features with monumental architecture of the central Petén. One particularly striking example is the triadic platform grouping, found at Naranjal as well as Uaxactún and other early sites of the northern and southern lowlands. The temporal and geographic distribution of Maya triadic platform groupings are reviewed in conjunction with such shared architectural features as rounded corners. These comparisons support the early dating ofmegalithic architecture and help define the special characteristics of this northern lowland style.
