Empowering The Marginal Student: An Innovative Skills-Based Extra Credit Assignment, Ellen N. Junn
Empowering The Marginal Student: An Innovative Skills-Based Extra Credit Assignment, Ellen N. Junn
Office of the Provost Scholarship
A simple extra-credit assignment explicitly rewarded marginal or failing students for improving their learning and study strategies. The instructor approached individual students who were at risk for failing the course following the midterm exam and gave them the option of earning extra-credit points for regularly documenting a variety of effective learning and study skills. In contrast to control groups of matched marginal students and of nonfailing students, those attempting the extra-credit assignment improved their test performance from midterm to final exam. They were more likely to earn at least a grade of C and less likely to drop out of …

Racial Attitudes Of Black Students During The Reagan Era, Luke S. Tripp
Racial Attitudes Of Black Students During The Reagan Era, Luke S. Tripp
Ethnic and Women's Studies Working Papers
The 1980s was a period when Blacks experienced setbacks and reversals in various areas of social life. Did the setbacks cause Blacks to turn away from whites? This is the question that is addressed in this study of the racial attitudes of Black college students. The purpose of this research is to describe the attitudes of Black students toward Whites during the Reagan era and compare their attitudes with the attitudes of the general Black population. To provide a background to interpret our findings, we will review the major political and economic events of the 1980s or the Reagan years. …

Most men detest the notion that they are "babysitting" during their solo parenting stints, but many are uncertain about what exactly their role is and should be during these times.

Privacy And The News Media, Stephen D. Cooper
Privacy And The News Media, Stephen D. Cooper
Communications Faculty Research
The right of the public to know and the right of the individual to be let alone are inherently in conflict. The origins of these rights are quite different: the former derived from the First Amendment's protection of a free press, the latter in a law journal article published in the late nineteenth century. So, too, has the development of these ideas followed different paths: the former as Constitutional law, the latter as tort law. This article examines the relationship between privacy law and the press. A century ago two lawyers called for legal relief from aggressive newspaper reporters. At …
A Prescription For Health Care, Alyssa Schlander
A Prescription For Health Care, Alyssa Schlander
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Too many people do not have access to the health care that they need and deserve. However, no one should have to suffer through and illness because they do not earn enough money to be able to buy health care. it is our responsibility to make sure that our entire community, regardless of their income, has access to these essential human services that our medical community is capable of providing.
With the spiraling costs and constant development of advanced technology in health care, along with the existence of the third-party payment system, our country has created the most costly health …
Language Typology And Reconstruction: The Prenasalized Stops Of Kisi, George Tucker Childs
Language Typology And Reconstruction: The Prenasalized Stops Of Kisi, George Tucker Childs
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The findings of language typologists can contribute to understanding synchronic variation where no diachronic facts are available. By establishing what happens universally, one can extrapolate as to the past and perhaps as to the future of a language on the basis of synchronic evidence. One approach within such a framework concentrates on a typologically unusual or marked feature on the assumption that its derivation may be established from less highly marked features. This paper discusses the typologically unusual prenasalized stops of Kisi, a Mel language belonging to the Southern Branch of (West) Atlantic. The approach adopted here is based on …
