The Bridge

In Danish settlements throughout the United States,

Jmmigrants often formed reading clubs within which their

members could read, discuss, and circulate recent Danish

publications. One such club, the "Tolvten" (The Dozen),

was founded in Chicago in 1897 and remained in existence

until 1977.

The Hybrid Master's Degree: Combining Research With Practice, David C. Coulson., Travis Linn

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article discusses the development of a hybrid master degree program by the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada in Reno. Since the journalism faculty of the school is too small to offer a full-service master's degree, the school developed a hybrid program that integrates systematic research with practice-based education. The program is designed to equip students with knowledge in academic research in preparation to doctoral studies. The program also emphasizes the study of mass media to prepare students for professional careers in broadcast journalism.

Obligations And Penalties Under Lemon Laws: Automobiles Versus Tractors, Terence J. Centner, Michael E. Wetzstein Jan 1995

Obligations And Penalties Under Lemon Laws: Automobiles Versus Tractors, Terence J. Centner, Michael E. Wetzstein

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Distinctive new provisions of tractor lemon laws which create obligations and provide penalties for defective self-propelled agricultural equipment are contrasted with provisions of automobile lemon laws. Lemon-law obligations involve both producers' guarantees to provide consumers with a serviceable vehicle and producers' promises to remedy defects. Due to fewer manufacturer obligations under the tractor lemon laws as opposed to automobile lemon laws, tractors may be expected to have more defects than automobiles. Yet the tractor lemon laws contain fewer penalties in the form of restitution remedies. The inconsistences of these obligations and penalties suggest tractor laws may be inefficient.

External Sovereignty And International Law, Ronald A. Brand Jan 1995

External Sovereignty And International Law, Ronald A. Brand

Articles

This essay addresses the need to redefine current notions of sovereignty. It returns to earlier concepts of subjects joining to receive the benefits of peace and security provided by the sovereign. It diverges from most contemporary commentary by avoiding what has become traditional second-tier social contract analysis. In place of a social contract of states, this redefinition of sovereignty recognizes that international law in the twentieth century has developed direct links between the individual and international law. The trend toward democracy as an international law norm further supports discarding notions of a two-tiered social contract relationship between the individual and …

Financial Intermediation And Growth In Developing Countries, Asim Husain Jan 1995

Financial Intermediation And Growth In Developing Countries, Asim Husain

Honors Papers

Two main relationships between finance and growth are often emphasized: i) the role that financial markets have in channeling savings towards investment and ii) the informational problems that financial markets are able to solve that would otherwise lead to inefficient outcomes. This paper emphasizes a model where prospective entrepreneurs are evaluated in turn by financial markets on their ability to come up with a successful innovation which determines the level of productivity in the economy. With efficient financial markets loans are made to those who are the most likely to come up with marketable innovations. Because marketable innovations lead to …

Estimating The Demand Structure Of Housing Characteristics: A Nonparametric Approach, Christopher Ngai Jan 1995

Estimating The Demand Structure Of Housing Characteristics: A Nonparametric Approach, Christopher Ngai

Honors Papers

The conventional approach has many drawbacks. Follain and Jimenez [1985]discussed many of those in detail. One of which I try to address in this paper is the functional form "pre-selection". As pointed out in the last paragraph, researchers often specify, in one way or another, specific functional forms that embody assumptions about the references of households. This renders researchers much discretion on the underlying relationships that are under studying.

A better approach would be to use nonparametric estimation approach in both stages so as to avoid those unnecessary errors in functional form selection. By nonparametric estimation, it means that the …

Exchange Rates And The Trade Balance In Argentina And Peru: Is There A J-Curve?, Steven C. Trost Jan 1995

Exchange Rates And The Trade Balance In Argentina And Peru: Is There A J-Curve?, Steven C. Trost

Honors Papers

In this paper, I test whether quarterly data either supports or disproves the existence of such a J-curve in two Latin American countries -- Argentina and Peru. The time periods studied will be: for Peru, 1979 quarter 1 to 1991 quarter 2 and for Argentina, 1977 quarter 1 to 1990 quarter 4. Before completing the empirical part of this paper, I expected to find, if any, only a short deterioration in the trade balance following a depretiation of the real exchange rate in these two countries. With prices as well as other economic indicators changing daily, the reaction times of …

This is the report of the eleventh of a series of workshops organised by the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM), which was established in 1991 by the European Commission. ECVAM's main goal, as defined in 1993 by its Scientific Advisory Committee, is to promote the scientific and regulatory acceptance of alternative methods which are of importance to the biosciences and which reduce, refine or replace the use of laboratory animals. One of the first priorities set by ECVAM was the implementation of procedures which would enable it to become well-informed about the state-of-the-art of non-animal test …

Play Signals As Punctuation: The Structure Of Social Play In Canids, Marc Bekoff Jan 1995

Play Signals As Punctuation: The Structure Of Social Play In Canids, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

Actions called play signals have evolved in many species in which social play has been observed. Despite there being only few empirical demonstrations, it generally is accepted that play signals are important in the initiation ("I want to play") and maintenance ("I still want to play") of ongoing social play. In this study I consider whether a specific and highly stereotyped signal, the bow, is used to maintain social play in adult and infant domestic dogs, infant wolves, and infant coyotes.

To answer this question the temporal placement of bows relative to actions that are also used in other contexts …

Problems And Prospects In Society's Response To Abuse And Neglect, John R. Schuerman, Julia H. Littell Jan 1995

Problems And Prospects In Society's Response To Abuse And Neglect, John R. Schuerman, Julia H. Littell

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper presents an analysis of the current situation in child welfare–the explosion of foster care caseloads, the proliferation of family preservation programs, and the principles underlying these approaches–and suggests new ways of thinking about reform of the child welfare system.

We begin with a review of the increase in out-of-home care. We then tum to an analysis of the three basic principles underlying the current child welfare system: permanency, least restrictive alternative, and reasonable efforts. We devote a major part of the paper to the family preservation programs that embody these principles. We describe what we perceive to be …

A Synthesis Of Research On Family Preservation And Family Reunification Programs, Julia H. Littell, John R. Schuerman Jan 1995

A Synthesis Of Research On Family Preservation And Family Reunification Programs, Julia H. Littell, John R. Schuerman

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

How effective are current efforts to preserve and reunify families in child welfare? In this paper we review research on programs aimed at preventing out-of-home placement of children, broader family preservation programs, and programs designed to reunify families with children in foster care.1 We examine what is known about the outcomes of these programs, relationships between service characteristics and outcomes, and the response of subgroups of clients to services.

Claims that family preservation programs result in substantial reductions in the placement of children are based largely on non-experimental studies. Such studies do not provide solid evidence of program effects. Evidence …
