Pan-Arabism V. Pan-Africanism In The Sudan: The Crisis Of Divergent Ethnic Ideologies, Jonathan Majak Jan 1995

Pan-Arabism V. Pan-Africanism In The Sudan: The Crisis Of Divergent Ethnic Ideologies, Jonathan Majak

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

This article examines the nature and the extent of political and cultural conflict between Northern and Southern Sudanese. It describes and analyzes various attempts by Arab dominated regimes in the Sudan, since independence from Britain, to achieve national intergration[integration] through Pan-Arabist policies that seek to Islamize and Arabize the African and largely Christian South. The current military regime dominated by Muslim fundamentalists is trying to turn the Sudan into an Islamic republic. Not only has this brought about a civil war, but it has also alienated other Muslims in the North who favor a secular government.

Cemetery Squatting And Anti-Chinese Tensions: Insights From Central Java, Daniel Garr Jan 1995

Cemetery Squatting And Anti-Chinese Tensions: Insights From Central Java, Daniel Garr

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Over the centuries, the Chinese minority in Indonesia has lived in an environment characterized by social tensions. This paper will explore Chinese-Javanese relations in the microcosm of a Javanese squatter settlement that has invaded a Chinese cemetery. Four issues will be considered which will illustrate the nature of long-standing tensions between these two ethnic groups: 1) the manner in which informal sector housing is developed; 2) economic attitudes of the Javanese with respect to the Chinese; 3) the relationship of the Chinese to law and authority and how conflict resolution is approached ; and 4) the linguistic context of Chinese-Javanese …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The articles found in this issue of Explorations in Ethnic Studies focus on a wide variety of topics. The first article by E. San Juan, Jr. challenges Ethnic Studies scholars to reassess the principles and goals of the discipline. Utilizing the experience of Asians in U.S. history, San Juan, Jr. highlights flaws in the pluralistic focus of culture that is separate and apart from the economic and political contexts of minority/majority power relationships. He contends that ethnic studies scholars need to critically address the problem of power, the knowledge it produces and that legitimates the misuse and abuse of such …

Gang Innovation, Patriarchy And Powerlessness : Expanding Theory To Relfect [Reflect] American Politics, Theresa A. Martinez Jan 1995

Gang Innovation, Patriarchy And Powerlessness : Expanding Theory To Relfect [Reflect] American Politics, Theresa A. Martinez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

When cities grew large enough to develop slums, gangs began to form. The heritage of gang behavior is poverty and its children: abuse, alcoholism, and drug addiction, to name a few. Today we are facing a problem of major proportions in our cities. Gang membership is seemingly growing with no end in sight, and a beleaguered nation, a struggling city, the mother of a gang member all ask: Why? There are probably several answers and more questions. This paper is an attempt to understand the problem of gang delinquency by utilizing already existing theory. Robert Merton's Strain Theory lends itself …

"No Certain Way To Tell Japanese From Chinese": Racist Statements And The Marking Of Difference, M.K. Johnson Jan 1995

"No Certain Way To Tell Japanese From Chinese": Racist Statements And The Marking Of Difference, M.K. Johnson

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

After the 1941 Japanese attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, a series of articles appeared simultaneously in American magazines. A 22 December 1941 article in Time gives advice to its Caucasian readers on "How To Tell Your Friends From the Japs," as does an article in Life magazine entitled "How To Tell Japs From the Chinese." From the perspective of the late twentieth century, the racism of these texts seems obvious. At the time of their appearance, how did this racism remain unmarked? This paper has two purposes: the first, examining the way racist statements about people …

At this point many of us have been involved in ethnic studies for more than twenty years. The perspectives and observations offered in this monograph are transcribed from the recordings of the plenary. It offers the reader a far-ranging discussion of the field, its history, its struggles, its pedagogy, and some of its underlying principles.

[Review Of] Vicki L. Crawford, Jacqueline Ann Rouse, And Barbara Woods, Eds. Women In The Civil Rights Movement: Trailblazers And Torchbearers, 1941-1965, George H. Junne Jr Jan 1995

[Review Of] Vicki L. Crawford, Jacqueline Ann Rouse, And Barbara Woods, Eds. Women In The Civil Rights Movement: Trailblazers And Torchbearers, 1941-1965, George H. Junne Jr

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Many chronicles of the Civil Rights Movements seem to depict the activities of men such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Kwame Toure (Stokely Carmichael), Bobby Seale, and other important persons. Though they merit the attention they receive, it is quite apparent that the central role of women has been omitted. Sexism among historians and those involved in the movement have concealed their centrality. This work attempts to address that situation by recounting the importance of women such as Ella Baker, Mary Fair Burks, Septima Clark, Doris Derby, Famnie [Fannie] Lou Hamer, Zilphia Horton, Dr. Lillian Johnson, Denise …

[Review Of] Carl Gutierrez-Jones. Rethinking The Borderlands: Between Chicano Culture And Legal Discourse, David Goldstein-Shirley Jan 1995

[Review Of] Carl Gutierrez-Jones. Rethinking The Borderlands: Between Chicano Culture And Legal Discourse, David Goldstein-Shirley

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In this ambitious book, Carl Gutierrez-Jones musters ideas from Critical Race Studies, Critical Legal Studies, and literary scholarship to explicate the relationship between Chicanos and the law. Contrary to the notion that American jurisprudence is a neutral, value-free institution, the author argues that, as Chicano and especially Chicana artists have depicted, the legal system's emphasis on individual responsibility ignores the economic and social milieu entangling Chicanos. The broad scholarship, incisive analysis, and careful reasoning make this book a valuable contribution to our understanding of the Chicano experience.

[Review Of] David G. Such. Avant-Garde Jazz Musicians: Performing "Out There ", Andrew Bartlett Jan 1995

[Review Of] David G. Such. Avant-Garde Jazz Musicians: Performing "Out There ", Andrew Bartlett

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The burgeoning scholarship on the avant-garde in jazz of the 1950s and 1960s still accounts for only a small number of scholarly jazz-related publications. Though the ascendance of interdisciplinary, cultural studies paradigms leave open many pathways to discussions of avant-garde jazz, David G. Such's Avant-Garde Jazz Musicians incorporates little ofthe cultural criticism Ronald Radano offers in his equally new New Musical Figurations: Anthony Braxton’s Cultural Critique (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1993). Such instead focuses multiply on what avant-garde musicians say about their music's position a handful of topical devices which head chapters in the text. From considering "Labels," an …

Historical Review Of Social Security And Its Effect On Personal Savings, Douglas P. Rose Jan 1995

Historical Review Of Social Security And Its Effect On Personal Savings, Douglas P. Rose

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Social Security has left its indelible mark on the American culture, however there still remains considerable debate over the effect it has had in curtailing personal savings for the express purpose of providing for one’s retirement. This study begins with a review of the origins of the modem Social Security system and critiques previous attempts at trying to quantify its impact on personal savings habits. While most previous attempts have aimed to construct a future benefits variable in order to measure this effect, it is presumed in this model that current observations and experiences with Social Security are the most …

Economic- Air Pollution Models: An Econometrics Regression Approach, Muhammed R. Yunus Jan 1995

Economic- Air Pollution Models: An Econometrics Regression Approach, Muhammed R. Yunus

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Economic- air pollution models have been developed using an econometrics regression approach for the ambient air concentration levels of total particulate matter (TPM) ,, I960- 1990, sulfur oxide (SOx), 1962-1992, and carbon monoxide (CO), 1970-1992. There are some difficulties in determining the explanatory variables because many variables which affect ambient air levels may also be related to others explanatory variables. Furthermore, the lack of available ambient air concentration level data is another constraint in developing the models. Yet, this study suggests that while gross domestic product per capita has increased over time, ambient air levels of TPM and SOx pollutants …

Image Matching Of Firearm Fingerprints, A. J. Mehnert, J. M. Cross, C. L. Smith, G. A. Comber

Research outputs pre 2011

A spent cartridge case exhibits characteristic markings (firearm fingerprint) that can be used to identify the type and possibly make of weapon in which the cartridge was fired. This report details research into the use of discriminant analysis for the purpose of matching spent rim-fire cartridge cases to specific make and model firearms. The discrimination and classification are based on several scalar shape parameters for the two-dimensional silhouette of the firing pin (FP) impression-- shape factor calculated from the second order moment of inertia, G factor calculated from the distance transform, and the P2A factor- as well as the distance …
