Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt
Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt
The Bridge
In the 1995-96 academic year Grand View College will
celebrate its first hundred years of life. In anticipation of
this milestone, suggestions have been made to designate
1994-95 the "Year of Grundtvig," and to formally observe
with the entire Grand View community the influence of
the great Dane upon the college and its educational philosophy.
What, after all, could be more fitting for a college
whose most recent Academic Mission Statement proudly
declares its founding "by Danish immigrants who sought
to give the educational vision and ideals of N.F.S.
Grundtvig an institutional presence?"
Some Reflections Of My Life: An Account Of Mission Work Among The Cherokee, Abelone Larsen
Some Reflections Of My Life: An Account Of Mission Work Among The Cherokee, Abelone Larsen
The Bridge
Editor's Introduction
In 1892, at the invitation of a Danish immigrant who had married a Cherokee woman in what was then Indian Territory, the Danish Lutheran Church Association sent a student from Trinity Seminary in Blair, Nebraska, to investigate the possibility of doing mission work among the Cherokee. The student, Niels Laurits Nielsen, returned in the summer of 1893 and began working among the Cherokee, eventually founding a school and a church at Oaks, Oklahoma. The Oaks mission became one of the most important missions of the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church (later the UELC) and continues as an institution …
The Building Of Immanuel Lutheran Church In Kimballton, Iowa, Jeanette Lillehoj
The Building Of Immanuel Lutheran Church In Kimballton, Iowa, Jeanette Lillehoj
The Bridge
Coming into the small Iowa town of Kimballton from any direction, the spire of Immanuel Lutheran Church, which stands on a high point in the town, is clearly visible. The early Danish immigrants who built this church intended the church spire to be a beacon to those entering the town. The centennial of Immanuel Lutheran Church will be celebrated in 1997. To those Danish immigrants who were responsible for building this church, this article is dedicated.

The Bridge
In 1979 a book The American Image: Photographs from
the National Archives, 1860-1960 was published. It was
based on an exhibit of the same name, which opened at the
National Archives in Washington, D. C. in November, 1979.
In the forward James Rhoads, archivist of the United
States, tells about how the photos were selected.

The Bridge
Richard Sandager was given this manuscript (written in
Danish by his grandfather) when he visited Denmark in
1965. He received it from A. Kristian Andersen, another
grandson of Anders Kristian Andersen, who lived on the
old family farm. He was a Representative to the Danish
Parliament in Copenhagen at that time.

The Tofflerian Paradox, Robert J. Bunker

Given the issue's importance—the Army's future as an effective 21st-century warfighting institution—Tofflerian theory attributes that are conceptually flawed should be forcefully acknowledged. With this perspective in mind, I posit that the war forms developed in War and Anti-War, specifically First and Second Wave war, are overgeneralized and distort Western warfare's historical development. As such, the war forms do not significantly further RMA theory and potentially pose a great liability. Still, these terms are becoming accepted by Army scholars because of the Tofflers' great theoretical influence.

TL and 14C dating has revealed anomalous chronostratigraphies at two sites on the coast of southern New South Wales, Australia, where Pleistocene sands have been driven onshore over Holocene estuarine deposits. Lack of solar bleaching of the TL component which occurs in normal swash zones, an identical TL age obtained from pumice incorporated in the Pleistocene deposit, and boulders scattered through the sand are indicative of tsunami impact. These observations prompt reassessment of the strictly uniformitarian models of barrier emplacement during the Holocene transgression both in eastern Australia and elsewhere in the world where tsunami are a possibility.

This essay reflects on a petit cause célèbre that played out during the National Sculpture Forum in Canberra over April 1995. The centre of attention was two roughly formed concrete seated figures depicting naked Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of the United Kingdom. The issues to be reviewed concern loyalty, allegiance and two inanimate lumps of concrete, stuff formed and shaped to eventually disperse at a rate more rapid than most lumps of concrete normally would. In the event, however, The Large Bask, Liz and Phil stripped bare, or, to give the work its formal title, Down by the …

Archiving Electronic Journals, Gordon B. Neavill, Mary Ann Sheblé
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
Libraries must take an active role in collecting and archiving electronic journals to ensure that their contents remain accessible to users as far into the future as possible. The CICNet electronic journals project represents a promising example of cooperative network-based archiving undertaken by the library community, but at the present stage of development the most reliable archiving option is for individual libraries or library consortia to obtain electronic journals directly from the network and establish their own access and archiving procedures. Problems involving in long-term electronic archiving include the short life expectancies of digital storage media, hardware and software dependency, …
Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer
Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.
Inheritance And Number Of Genes Affecting Quantitative Traits Within F2 Maize Populations, D. H. Schmidt, A. R. Hallauer
Inheritance And Number Of Genes Affecting Quantitative Traits Within F2 Maize Populations, D. H. Schmidt, A. R. Hallauer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Populations derived from crosses of elite genotypes are commonly used in plant breeding programs. Knowledge of the genetic variation among individuals and their progenies within F2 populations is essential for effective selection of important traits. The genetic variation and number of effective factors affecting the expression of quantitative traits within 30 F2 maize (Zea mays L.) populations were determined by different methods suggested for study of F2 populations. Estimates of heritability and number of effective factors varied among F2 populations for each trait, primarily because of the differences in trait expression between parents of crosses and the environmental effects upon …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1994-95, Paul E. Rider
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Since 1976, annual reports have served as a continuing record of the activities of the Iowa Academy of Science and an archive for its history. These augment the 100 year IAS history written in the centennial year of 1975.
This report covers the period from July 1, 1994 to June 30, 1995. It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and thoughts of the author.
