Comparative Federalism: Trends And Issues In The United States, China, And Russia, Roy W. Bahl Jan 1995

Comparative Federalism: Trends And Issues In The United States, China, And Russia, Roy W. Bahl

ECON Publications

The United States, China, and Russia share some features: large populations, large land areas, and historical pressures for decentralization in governance. The United States and Russia are formally federal countries, and China in many ways behaves as though it is a fiscal federalism. In the past few years, all three countries have undergone substantial changes in their intergovernmental systems, and central governments in all three countries are under fire from lower-level governments.

Many observers would see intergovernmental fiscal relations in the United States vs. Russia and China, as being so different as to be incomparable. Likewise, it might be argued …

A Comparison Of Participation Motives Of Competitive And Non-Competitive Youth Age Swimmers, Shane T. Harris

Theses : Honours

Understanding the participation motives of youth athletes is vital if their needs are to be met and their sport involvement enhanced. The purpose of this study was to examine the participation motives of a squad of competitive and non-competitive, youth-age, male and female swimmers. A qualitative interview technique was employed to identify the participation motives of 12 youth-age swimmers. The interview schedule was based on theories describing participation motivation, and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Data was deductively analysed, with statements classified into the motivation categories described by Passer (1981). Consistent with previous studies on participation motives in youth sport, the …

Developing An Exchange Network Simulator, Barry N. Markovsky

Faculty Publications

"X-Net" is a computer simulation that I developed in conjunction with Network Exchange Theory. This article recounts the process of X-Net's development, in addition to key substantive, theoretical, and design issues that motivated its form and content. It concludes with a discussion of the relationship between theory, simulation, and empirical tests.

Faculty Publications

This study examines the comparability between the last menstrual period-based and clinically estimated gestational age as collected on certificates of live birth. It explores whether sociodemographic or delivery characteristics influence their agreement and contrasts health status and health care utilization indicators, such as preterm, small for gestational age, and adequacy of prenatal care percentages, produced by each gestational age measure. The 1989-91 South Carolina public use live birth files were used for this analysis. A total of 169,082 single births to resident mothers were selected for investigation.

The clinically estimated gestational age distribution exhibited a higher mean and a tendency …

Research Assistants In The Clever Country, Michael K. Organ, S. Svensen

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, we outline some of the problems facing research workers in Australian universities, with an emphasis on research assistants, the lowest classification of paid research worker. It is concluded that, while conditions have improved slightly since 1978, research assistants are still among the most marginalised public sector employees, and subjected to employment conditions which should be considered unacceptable in a society which values the benefits accruing from research activities.
