The Ufo Contact Movement From The 1950'S To The Present, Christoper Bader

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

"Since the beginning of the UFO movement in the late 1940s, beliefs about what the aliens are like and the purpose of their visits to Earth have changed numerous times. The first claims of extended contact with alien beings in the early 1950s were entirely different in form and content from the current, frightening UFO abduction tales. This article will trace the UFO movement from its origin in 1947 to the present, explaining how its prevailing paradigms have changed."

Integrating Across The Psychology Curriculum: A Content Review Approach, James D. Foster Jan 1995

Integrating Across The Psychology Curriculum: A Content Review Approach, James D. Foster

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Teaching integration at the undergraduate level requires thoughtful coordination among psychology faculty. This article describes a content review process by which complimentary strengths and perspectives can be discovered and used to design a coordinated integration curriculum. The George Fox College undergraduate psychology department's integration content review is offered as an example. A content review requires a framework for both exploration of integration activity and desired outcomes. We propose four levels of integration activity in the classroom: (a) modeling of personal faith, (b) integrative discussions, (c) integration readings, and (d) course level integration. These levels are progressive, complimentary, and dependent, to …

Structural Ambiguities And Written Advertisements: An Inventory Of Tools For More Resourceful Advertisements In English, Dallin D. Oaks Jan 1995

Structural Ambiguities And Written Advertisements: An Inventory Of Tools For More Resourceful Advertisements In English, Dallin D. Oaks

Faculty Publications

Competent writers usually avoid ambiguity, but there are some types of writing tasks such as advertising in which a writer might actually want to create ambiguous wordplays. Among the most interesting of the wordplays are those which involve structural ambiguities. In the natural course of brainstorming, advertisers will occasionally generate structural ambiguities, but a more conscious understanding of the structure of a language could make the generation of such ambiguities easier. The English language contains some characteristics and patterns which contribute significantly toward creating structural ambiguities. And if ad writers know where to focus their attention, structurally ambiguous wordplays can …

Reexamining Argumentativeness And Resistance To Persuasion, Matina Suzanne Vourvopoulos Jan 1995

Reexamining Argumentativeness And Resistance To Persuasion, Matina Suzanne Vourvopoulos

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A recently developed receiver characteristic, argumentativeness, was examined for its relations to attitude change and information processing in persuasive communication. Generally thought to be a flowed personality trait, argumentativeness is currently being regarded in communication studies as a beneficial personality trait that correlates with other qualities such as high grade point average, dynamism in speech, achievement orientation, competitiveness and leadership behavior. This study examined the effect of argumentativeness on persuasion. It was predicted that high argumentative would be more resistant to persuasion, yet the findings show that, with a strong message, high argumentative are more likely to be persuaded by …

The Historical And Contemporary Contexts Of Leadership: A Conceptual Model, J. Thomas Wren Jan 1995

The Historical And Contemporary Contexts Of Leadership: A Conceptual Model, J. Thomas Wren

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Stating that leadership is a complex phenomenon repeats a truism that is painfully obvious to all who have ever participated in, observed, or analyzed the process as leaders, followers, students or scholars. Despite its inherent complexity, those who seek an understanding of the nature of leadership and leadership processes are well rewarded by the insights generated thereby. This essay provides an expanded conception of one of the key elements of the leadership process--the context of leadership.

The Secondary School Assistant Principal, Victoria W. Halsey Edd Jan 1995

The Secondary School Assistant Principal, Victoria W. Halsey Edd

Dissertations

School leadership research typically centers around the high profile roles of the site level principal and the district superintendent. The resulting scarcity of information in regard to the role of the assistant principal is contributing to ineffective training, fewer initial guidelines and an overall lack of clear conceptualization of the position. The purpose of this study was to construct a realistic portrayal of the assistant principal's daily professional life in the educational arena. This qualitative, ethnographic study stressed depth, richness and accuracy to depict the singular and collective voices of the participants. Eight practicing Junior and Senior High School assistant …

Searching For Effective Natural-Resources Policy: The Special Challenges Of Ecosystem Management, Steven E. Daniels, Gregg B. Walker Jan 1995

Searching For Effective Natural-Resources Policy: The Special Challenges Of Ecosystem Management, Steven E. Daniels, Gregg B. Walker

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

No matter how elegant ecosystem management is scientifically, it will not reach its potential in western U.S., with its abundant public lands, unless it is effective public policy. Such policy is (1) an adaptive process, (2) utilizes the most appropriate science and technology, (3) is implementable, and (4) has low transaction cost. This paper focuses on the latter two characteristics which are shaped by social legitimacy, and proposes a procedure termed Collaborative Learning as a promising decision-making process for ecosystem management.

How Do Actors And Actresses Age?: Self-Monitoring And Aging, Barbara A. Bowman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the relationship between life events, self-monitoring, and aging. This relationship is explored in the following five areas: religious practices, social networks, intergenerational relationships, retirement, and leisure. It was hypothesized that, compared to low self-monitors, high self-monitors would (a) spend less time in private devotional activities as they age, (b) feel a heavier impact from the reduction in the quantity of social networks, (c) have more distant intergenerational ties, (d) adjust to forced retirement more quickly, and ( e) be less satisfied with leisure time as they age. The 120 volunteer participants ranged in age from 51 through …

Improvements In Knowledge Of Norplant® Implants Acceptors: An Intervention Study In West Sumatra And West Java, Anthony Tan, Eman Mahdar, Faisal R. Djamal, Hafni Bachtiar, Jayanti Tuladhar, R. Hasan, R. Hasan, M. Hoesni

Reproductive Health

Previous studies on Norplant® implants in Indonesia have shown that there are a substantial number of implant acceptors, providers, fieldworkers, and volunteers who are unaware of the basic facts about Norplant. In addition, information, education, and communication materials are lacking for providers, fieldworkers, volunteers, and clients. With these issues in mind, the Training and Development Center for Biomedical and Human Reproduction Studies of the National Family Planning Coordinating Board launched an Operations Research intervention study with Study Groups on Human Reproduction from Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatra, and Padjajaran University, Bandung, West Java, with support from the Population Council. The …

Development Of Approaches To Community Based Family Planning Outreach In Egypt: Assessment Of Raidats Rifiats Program, Population Council Jan 1995

Development Of Approaches To Community Based Family Planning Outreach In Egypt: Assessment Of Raidats Rifiats Program, Population Council

Reproductive Health

Egypt’s family planning program officially began in 1965. Impressive gains in contraceptive use have been made since 1980, and the contraceptive prevalence rate increased from 24 percent in 1980 to 47 percent in 1992. Egypt’s National Population Policy addresses the nation’s population growth through multiple interventions designed to reduce fertility, including family planning (FP) services. FP accessibility is promoted through a network of public and NG0 FP clinics. A number of years ago, the Egyptian Family Planning Program began using the Raidats Rifiats program to extend services into rural communities. There is concern regarding the program’s ability to recruit women …

The project draws information from several sources including a 15-month monitoring of DMPA acceptors; surveys …
