Profitability And Nitrate Leaching Effects Of Possible Farming Practice And System Changes Over South Dakota's Big Sioux Aquifer: Case Farm No. 1 Summary, Lon D. Henning, Burton W. Pflueger, John H. Bischoff, Thomas L. Dobbs

Economics Pamphlet Series

The overall goal of the SARE/Water Quality project was to determine whether economic incentives offered by recent environmental provisions of the Federal farm program are sufficient to induce Western Corn Belt/Northern Great Plains farmers in environmentally sensitive areas to adopt sustainable farming practices and systems. To attain this goal, four case farms were chosen to be involved in this study based on their size, soil types, cropping systems, topography, and management in the Big Sioux Aquifer study area.

Predictable And Unpredictable Error In Tort Awards: The Effect Of Plaintiff Self Selection And Signalling, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Sep 1995

Predictable And Unpredictable Error In Tort Awards: The Effect Of Plaintiff Self Selection And Signalling, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

If a tort plaintiff can predict that the court will overestimate damages he is more likely to bring a case, but if the court is aware of this, it may wish to adjust its awards accordingly. In general, court error implies that the court should adjust for regression to the mean, moderating extreme awards whether they be high or low. Predictable error, however, tends to make a downwards adjustment optimal and unpredictable error an upwards adjustment, because of plaintiff selection and signalling.

Trade And Transboundary Pollution, M. Scott Taylor, Brian R. Copeland Sep 1995

Trade And Transboundary Pollution, M. Scott Taylor, Brian R. Copeland

M. Scott Taylor

This paper examines how national income and trading opportunities interact to determine the level and incidence of world pollution. We find that: (1) free trade raises world pollution if incomes differ substantially across countries; (2) if trade equalizes factor prices, human-capital-abundant countries lose from trade, while human capital scarce countries gain; (3) international trade in pollution permits can lower world pollution even when governments' supply of permits is unrestricted; (4) international income transfers may not affect world pollution or welfare; and (5) attempts to manipulate the terms of trade with pollution policy leave world pollution unaffected.

Klipsun Magazine

Money. We worry about it constantly, wonder how we'll pay our next bill, struggle to make ends meet. Strangely enough, though, we usually manage to find a way to buy the latest Soundgarden CD or a gorgeous new shirt from the Gap. Wolfish manufacturers often latch on to the Red-Riding-Hood innocence of college students, guiding us down a well-disguised path to poverty. In our special consumerism section, writers address the woes of credit, junk mail, the infamous lure of Columbia House and choosing cheap products over their "greener" competitors.

Though we can identify with such concerns, they pale in comparison …

Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies Publications

This workbook is meant to provide basic information and options for developing a strategy within your own community. Since economic, environmental, social, and political aspects differ from town to town, there is no magic wand for developing a sustainable community effort. There are, however, common processes which have been used by communities across the country that can provide a foundation for local efforts.

An Opportunity Lost: The Failure Of The Michigan Commission On Death And Dying, Joseph Ellin Sep 1995

An Opportunity Lost: The Failure Of The Michigan Commission On Death And Dying, Joseph Ellin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The Michigan Commission on Death and Dying was created to advise the state legislature on the politically volatile question of assisted suicide. Proposals were considered to allow assisted suicide with safeguards, and to continue the state's temporary absolute ban. Because of the political composition of the Commission, however, no consensus was reached, and the opportunity to enact humane but careful legislation seems to have passed. This paper examines the proposals the Commission considered, the alliances reflected in the voting, and some problems the Commission failed to address.

Maine 175 - A Celebration of 175 Years of Maine Statehood.

September 5, 1995 - January 28, 1996

This exhibition is designed to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Maine statehood using maps and other artifacts.

Maps and their creators have played an important role in the history of Maine from the time of the first visits by European mariners to the present. Explorers and mapmakers struggled first to take the measure of the land and then used maps to take possession of it. French and English officials put forward conflicting claims to Maine in the form of maps, as did …

From Comparative Risk To Decision Analysis: Ranking Solutions To Multiple-Value Environmental Problems, John Kadvany

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

While recognizing that the making of environmental policy is sufficiently complex that no one method can serve all conditions, Dr. Kadvany urges that more attention be given to multiattribute utility and decision analysis. He suggests this can help, e.g., to illuminate stakeholder values and generate alternative approaches.

A Conditional Kolmogorov Test, Donald W.K. Andrews Sep 1995

A Conditional Kolmogorov Test, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper introduces a conditional Kolmogorov test of model specification for parametric models with covariates (regressors). The test is an extension of the Kolmogorov test of goodness-of-fit for distribution functions. The test is shown to have power against 1/root{n}-local alternatives and all fixed alternatives to the null hypothesis. A parametric bootstrap procedure is used to obtain critical values for the test.

Conflict And Cooperation: Sociobiological Principles And The Behaviour Of Pigs, David Fraser, D. L. Kramer, E. A. Pajor, D. M. Weary Sep 1995

Conflict And Cooperation: Sociobiological Principles And The Behaviour Of Pigs, David Fraser, D. L. Kramer, E. A. Pajor, D. M. Weary

Sociobiology Collection

The pig provides many examples of how principles of behavioural ecology and sociobiology can lead to insights into farm animal behaviour. According to parent-offspring conflict theory, parents should tend to give a level of parental investment somewhat below that solicited by the young. When closely confined during lactation, sows can do little to limit the amount of contact with the piglets, and the young stimulate a prolonged, high level of lactation. Certain alternative housing systems allow the sow to limit the stimulation she receives, and the resulting reduction in lactation can actually be advantageous to both parties. Communal care of …

Selective Tooth Clipping In The Management Of Low-Birth-Weight Piglets, S. Robert, B. K. Thompson, David Fraser Sep 1995

Selective Tooth Clipping In The Management Of Low-Birth-Weight Piglets, S. Robert, B. K. Thompson, David Fraser

Farm Animal Husbandry Collection

A study was designed to test the potential benefits of selective tooth clipping (the practice of leaving the eye teeth intact in the smallest piglets of a litter to make them more competitive) under commercial conditions. A total of 346 litters were assigned to either the control treatment where all piglets had their teeth clipped, or the experimental treatment where one or more piglets of low birth weight had their teeth left intact. Piglets were weighed within 24 h of birth and at 7, 21 and 56 d. In litters of 12-14 animals, but not in smaller litters, the lower-birth-weight …

Chimpanzees In Laboratories: Distribution And Types Of Research, Martin L. Stephens Sep 1995

Chimpanzees In Laboratories: Distribution And Types Of Research, Martin L. Stephens

Laboratory Experiments Collection

This review presents the results of an informal 1993 survey of the distribution of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the world's laboratories, and the types of research conducted on them. Based on the available information, there are over 2200 chimpanzees in.laboratories, most of which are located in several US facilities. Europe apparently has less than 200 chimpanzees housed in two facilities. Worldwide, an estimated 80% of the chimpanzees in laboratories are used in studies on AIDS and hepatitis. It is concluded that, if Europe terminated its use of chimpanzees in research, for either financial, moral or political reasons, the impact on …
