Slow Motion: Economic Mobility Of Young Workers In The 1970s And 1980s, Greg J. Duncan, Johanne Boisjoly, Timothy M. Smeeding Sep 1995

Slow Motion: Economic Mobility Of Young Workers In The 1970s And 1980s, Greg J. Duncan, Johanne Boisjoly, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

This paper investigates the question of how long it takes young male workers to earn enough to reach a given standard of living, e.g., enough to support a family. We use the Panel Study of Income Dynamics data on the earnings of children and their parents to answer these questions. Our findings are that all groups of men, classified by race, ethnicity, and education level, are taking longer to reach a given standard of living. Some, e.g., undereducated black males, will never reach middle class standards of living for themselves. Implications for household formation, marriage, and public policy are discussed …

The Return To Family Intervention In Youth Services: A Juvenile Justice Case Study, Gordon Bazemore, Susan Day Sep 1995

The Return To Family Intervention In Youth Services: A Juvenile Justice Case Study, Gordon Bazemore, Susan Day

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

After more than a decade of relative neglect, youth services policymakers in the late 1980s began targeting the family as a primary focus of intervention in the response to a range of deviant behavior. One recent example of this return to family intervention has been a renewed emphasis on family services in juvenile courts and juvenile justice agencies. This case study describes one attempt to implement a new "family-focused" intervention approach as part of a larger return to treatment-oriented probation services in an urban juvenile justice system. Based on interviews and participant observation data gathered during a nine month field …

Policy Implementation In Social Welfare: A Framework For Analysis, Valire Carr Copeland, Sandra Wexler

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A review of the research on implementation of federal-state partnership programs indicates a need for more analyses of the post-legislative phase of social welfare policy. This paper addresses the importance of research on policy implementation in social welfare. It examines some critical tools in the policy implementation analysis process, presents a framework for analysis, and offers recommendations to stimulate interest in the study of the implementation process.

Researching Social Networks In Action, Kenneth C. Banks, Marshall J. Mangan Sep 1995

Researching Social Networks In Action, Kenneth C. Banks, Marshall J. Mangan

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Many communities across Canada today are challenged by conditions that approach social and economic disintegration. As agencies of the state cut back their financial support of welfare services, citizens are faced with both increasing levels of stress and fewer forms of relief provided by established institutions. For researchers, the challenges of a shrinking resource base are compounded by ongoing epistemological and methodological controversies within social science. The recent emergence of a "postmodern" critique of traditional social-scientific methodology arises from some profound reorientations in the philosophy and the social context of the social sciences, reorientations that are reflective of fundamental economic …

The Foundation Of United States Security Assistance To Egypt: 1969-1979, Donald S. Massey Sep 1995

The Foundation Of United States Security Assistance To Egypt: 1969-1979, Donald S. Massey

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to identify the role of U.S. foreign policy in shaping Egypt's transition from Soviet economic and military aid to U.S. security assistance from 1969 to 1979 and the factors shaping that transition. An historical analysis of the Nixon, Ford, and Carter Administrations and their foreign policy towards Egypt and the Middle East during the period in question was employed to complete this study. The researcher determined that U.S. diplomacy and dialogue in negotiating an Egyptian-Israeli peace resulted in the end to Soviet economic and military aid to Egypt. During the negotiating process, U.S. economic and military aid …

Linda Jacobson Interview Virtual Reality Evangelist, Loretta L. Lange

SWITCH

In the interview with Linda Jacobson, a Virtual Reality (VR) artist, Jacobson discusses the current and future state of VR technology’s role in the politics of the body, social identity, self, gender, class, and race. This article discusses the fact that barriers to access exist for a more diverse set of artists across race, class, and gender to engage with VR technology and the need to evolve the development platform, so artists can implement their ideas in a low-cost way. The author discusses Jaron Lanier’s ideas about using VR to explore other identities based on a theatrical model where the …
