School Attendance And Achievement In A Population Of Ecuadorian Underage Street Workers, Rossana Viteri
School Attendance And Achievement In A Population Of Ecuadorian Underage Street Workers, Rossana Viteri
Dissertations and Theses
Underage street work is a social problem that is on the increase in Ecuador. Children, ages 5 to 17, wander through the streets in an attempt to make some money for their own survival or to help their families survive. The literature on underage street workers (USWs) reports that the working activities of these children impact their health and education. This study examined school attendance and achievement of USWs who are affiliated with an underage workers program in Ecuador. Using a quantitative methodology, the study looked at variations by location and age, with a special focus on gender issues, as …

At 09:25 the victim was clearing a lane using a combination of detector and excavation (with a "digging trowel"). While in a kneeling position he reached out to dig at the edge of the lane and initiated a PMN. He suffered traumatic amputation of his right arm "at the elbow" and lacerations to his face, right leg, and left arm. He walked to a safe lane where paramedics gave first aid. He was then driven to Sabie and taken by air to Maputo Central Hospital, leaving at 10:17 and arriving at 11:02.

The Leader Who Serves (Washington, D.C.), C. William Pollard
The Leader Who Serves (Washington, D.C.), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
In this speech at the Eighth Annual National Conference on Federal Quality (Washington Hilton and Towers), Pollard details the main contours of servant leadership. In particular, he focuses on how servant leadership not only influences the ethos of the workplace but also affects the very lives of the corporation's employees.

Catching Up After Peace Corps Reunion In Ethiopia, Richard C. Crepeau
Catching Up After Peace Corps Reunion In Ethiopia, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
When I left a month ago for a Peace Corps reunion in Ethiopia the Phillies were in first place and the Braves were futilely chasing them; Scott Erickson, Mark Guthrie, Kevin Tapani, and Rick Aguellera were all Minnesota Twins; and Wimbledon had just started.

Economic Development And Income Inequality: The Taiwan Case, Ju-Kuang Chang
Economic Development And Income Inequality: The Taiwan Case, Ju-Kuang Chang
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines income inequality in Taiwan from three perspectives: economic development, political democracy, and world-system/dependence. Education, population growth, population structure, unemployment, savings, and export growth are treated as variables. Below are the important conclusions.
Economic development has an effect on income inequality. The level of development is crucial. In the 1950s and 1960s, the relationship was significant, but in the next two decades economic development did not further decrease income inequality. Sector dualism was not a good predictor.
Democratization did not have an obvious relation with income inequality. But the stable political environment and the endeavors of government to …

The Prudential Spirit Of Community Youth Survey: A Survey Of High School Students On Community Involvement, Wirthlin Group
School K-12
Most of today's high-school teens (62%) feel their communities are good or very good places to live. But more say that conditions in their communities are getting worse (30%) than getting better (25%).
Crime and violence are the most pressing problems facing communities today, according to 36% of students. Other areas of concern are drug and alcohol abuse (cited by 18%), education (7%), economic problems (7%) and lack of youth programs (6%).
More than six teens in ten (62%) say the solutions to such problems lie in individual action rather than government programs. Only one in three (33%) favor government …

Yac Tracks: A Step-By-Step Guide For Organizing Community Youth Action Coalitions, Kansas Office For Community Service, Points Of Light Foundation
Special Topics, General
YAC Tracks, a step-by-step Guide for organizing Community Youth Action Coalitions, is the result of a ten month study on developing local youth service organizations. The first step for this manual was the discovery of: How to Start Your Own Youth Council", a publication of the New York State Youth Council. This information provided the base to create an outline for YAC Tracks in December 1995. Since that time, YAC Tracks has evolved and changed considerably! This manual consists of a process for mobilizing Community YACs at home and includes examples, activity ideas and practical suggestions. Contributors to t:his effort …

Growth, Trade, And International Transfers, Eric O'N. Fisher
Growth, Trade, And International Transfers, Eric O'N. Fisher
Economics
This paper analyzes the simplest neoclassical economy in which agents have finite lives and there is sustained per capita growth. The growth rate of the world economy depends upon countries’ savings propensities and common technology. Trade can reverse an economy’s autarkic growth trajectory, and a country with a high savings rate runs a current account surplus. If a surplus country expands aggregate demand while a deficit country contracts analogously, world growth increases. An appropriate international policy can change the path of the world economy from stagnation to growth.
