A Model For The Evaluation And Reward Of Teaching In Agricultural Education, Leverne A. Barrett, Elizabeth Banset, Osmund Gilbertson Apr 1995

A Model For The Evaluation And Reward Of Teaching In Agricultural Education, Leverne A. Barrett, Elizabeth Banset, Osmund Gilbertson

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

In 1986, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), U.S. Department of Education, issued its first call for innovative approaches to solve the problem of reward for teaching in American universities. The FIPSE Board of Directors and staff recognized that the greatest disparity in the postsecondary reward system occurred in research-oriented universities where research garnered more rewards than teaching. They concluded that if teaching in American universities was going to improve, the reward structures in higher education needed to change. This article describes a plan designed to evaluate and reward teaching in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, …

The Importance Of Selected Instructional Areas In The Present And Future Secondary Agricultural Education Curriculum As Perceived By Teachers, Principals, And Superintendents In Nebraska, Rick Foster, Lloyd C. Bell, Noel Erskine

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine how agricultural education instructors and their administrators viewed the importance of the current and future instructional areas as part of the agricultural education curriculum in Nebraska. The population of the study included all agricultural teachers, principals, and superintendents of secondary schools in Nebraska which offered agricultural education during the 1989-1990 school year (n=381). A random sample of forty schools were selected from the population. The respondents were asked to rate the importance of topics in both the current and future agricultural education curriculum. No instructional topics were identified as either very important …

Curriculum Integration And The Disciplines Of Knowledge, James A. Beane Apr 1995

Curriculum Integration And The Disciplines Of Knowledge, James A. Beane

Service Learning, General

At a conference on curriculum integration, a speaker who admitted that he had only recently been introduced to the concept said, "From a quick look at various readings, it seems that the disciplines of knowledge are the enemy of curriculum integration." Unwittingly or not, he had gone straight to the heart of perhaps the most contentious issue in current conversations about curriculum integration. Simply put, the issue is this: If we move away from the subject-centered approach to curriculum organization, will the disciplines of knowledge be abandoned or lost in the shuffle?

Assessment Of A Service-Learning Programmme, Chris Walsh Apr 1995

Assessment Of A Service-Learning Programmme, Chris Walsh

Evaluation/Reflection

In the summer, 1994, NSEE Quarterly, I described the design and setting up of a new service-learning course at Roehampton Institute, London, England. The innovatory nature of this course was determined by its academic availability in the undergraduate curriculum. In this article, I want to examine the assessment methods and criteria. Why was it decided to provide a rigorous system of assessment and to assess the reflective work produced rather than directly assess the agency experience?

Effects Of Witnessing Domestic Violence On Children, Theresa L. Bundy Apr 1995

Effects Of Witnessing Domestic Violence On Children, Theresa L. Bundy

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of domestic violence on children. The main questions explored were the effects of domestic violence on the self-perception and behavior of children. The children at a shelter for domestic violence completed the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children and the Self-Perception Profile for Children, depending on the child's age. The children also completed a questionnaire on their views of relationships and their future. The mothers of the children completed a standardized scale that paralleled the scale completed by the children, along with questionnaires on the …

Black Nations/Queer Nations Conference, Cathy Cohen Apr 1995

Black Nations/Queer Nations Conference, Cathy Cohen

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Black lesbian and gay men have made significant accomplishments but continue to confront a number of urgent challenges, such as AIDS, unemployment, racism, and homophobia. Our future survival turns on our ability to break new ground toward overcoming these challenges. It is therefore necessary for us to dialogue, debate, and develop new strategies of resistance and community education that will advance the politics of lesbian and gay people of African descent, our communities, and society as a whole. To this end, we will sponsor an unprecedented three-day conference.

The Electronic Journal As The Heart Of An Online Scholarly Community, Timothy D. Stephen, Teresa M. Harrison Apr 1995

The Electronic Journal As The Heart Of An Online Scholarly Community, Timothy D. Stephen, Teresa M. Harrison

Communication Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the role of electronic academic journals within scholarly communities. Scholarly communities are best understood as discourse communities which share symbol systems as well as con- ventions for communication. We discuss the ways in which the net- work and the electronic journals it hosts can play an important role in facilitating the routine discourse processes of scholarly communi- ties. However, we also argue that the new medium will change the way that scholars read and write, the way they do research, and the form of research products. We consider in detail our experiences with the Electronic Journal of …

Athletic Identity And Sport Orientation Of Adolescent Swimmers With Disabilities, Jeffrey J. Martin, Carol Adams Mushett, Kari L. Smith Apr 1995

Athletic Identity And Sport Orientation Of Adolescent Swimmers With Disabilities, Jeffrey J. Martin, Carol Adams Mushett, Kari L. Smith

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Measures of athletic identity and sport orientation, developed from self-schema theory, social role theory, and achievement motivation theory, were used to examine international adolescent swimmers with disabilities. The multidimensional Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, 1993) was used to assess self-identity, social identity, exclusivity, and negative affectivity. The Sport Orientation Questionnaire (Gill & Deeter, 1988) measured competitiveness, win orientation, and goal orientation. Swimmers reported (a) a strong self-identity, (b) a moderate to strong social identity, (c) negative affectivity with lower levels of exclusivity, (d) strong competitiveness and goal orientation, and (e) moderate win orientation. Self-identity was correlated …

United States V. Steinmetz: The Legal Legacy Of The Civil War, Revisited, Susan Poser, Elizabeth R. Varon Apr 1995

United States V. Steinmetz: The Legal Legacy Of The Civil War, Revisited, Susan Poser, Elizabeth R. Varon

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

One of the enduring and yet unresolved issues concerning the Civil War is its legal nature: Was it an insurrection or an international war? During the war and since, the United States courts have repeatedly been called upon to determine the status of property which was under the control of the Confederacy and its agents during the Civil War. In the process of making such determinations, the courts have reopened questions about the war's legal status. United States v. Steinmetz is such a case.

The New Ethic For Animals And The Dairy Industry, Bernard Rollin Apr 1995

The New Ethic For Animals And The Dairy Industry, Bernard Rollin

Morality and Ethics of Industrial Farming Collection

There is an unfortunate tendency on the part of those who use animals to dismiss the new social concern with animal treatment as the irrational ravings of tofu-eating, ginseng-guzzling, urban wimps and bunny-hugging extremists.“Animal welfare is what we already do; animal rights if what they want us to do,” one animal scientist said, neatly summarizing the situation. However, what is of paramount importance is that “they” are not just a band of radicals; the new ethic for animals has taken root among society in general. As one cowboy in Kingsville, Texas put it to me:“Hell, Doc, if it were just …

When Is Cumulative Voting Preferable To Single-Member Districting?, Michael E Lewyn Apr 1995

When Is Cumulative Voting Preferable To Single-Member Districting?, Michael E Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

Cumulative voting is most appropriate in small towns, nonpartisan elections, and jurisdictions in which voters know whether they are in the majority. By contrast, single-member districts are preferable to cumulative voting in big cities, state or federal elections, partisan elections, and elections in which the racial or partisan balance between factions is either close or is unknown to most voters.
