Philanthropic Partnerships: The Theory Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Apr 1995

Philanthropic Partnerships: The Theory Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The third sector is the sector of commons in the same sense that the market is the sector of profit-oriented firms and the state is the sector of public bureaucracies. In its present state, nonprofit theory is largely the creation of committees of lawyers and accountants concerned only with very narrow questions. Despite its limitations, the contemporary philanthropic world has been reluctant to embrace any substitute universal summary terms to describe or characterize the ful range of concerns covered by concerns of philanthropy. Commons theory offers a possible alternative capable of dealing with the full range of philanthropic concerns.

These traits, along with many others, are used to separate people into groups within our culture. Because someone was inherently given these traits, they could be considered by others as more or less of a person. This was true during the era of slavery and internment, and is unfortunately still true today.

Three years ago, I attended Florida State University, where the student body was much more representative of the national ethnic makeup than Western. Since I didn’t have a car, I was dependent …

The Metaphors Of Retirement : Cutting Cords, Disentangling From Webs, And Heading For Pasture, Steven R. Phillips, Betsy Wackernagel Bach

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Pondy (1983) states, "Metaphors help to organize the objective facts of the

situation in the minds of the participants" (p. 157). This investigation

sought to provide insight into how actors viewed retirement by uncovering

and analyzing metaphors associated with retirement. Differences in the

metaphors used by retirees and non retirees were also examined. Retirees

used metaphors which indicated that "Transition," "Emotion," "Freedom,"

and "Shedding Weight" are a significant part of the retirement experience.

This study suggests that metaphor analysis provides a richly varied and

salient source of information about social actors' perceptions of

organizational retirement.

Monetary Policies In Interdependent Economies: An Open Economy Explanation For Base Drift And Price-Level Non-Trend-Stationarities, Joseph Daniels, David D. Vanhoose Apr 1995

Monetary Policies In Interdependent Economies: An Open Economy Explanation For Base Drift And Price-Level Non-Trend-Stationarities, Joseph Daniels, David D. Vanhoose

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Most nations have experienced 'base drift' of their money stocks and associated price-level non-trend-stationarities. Recent explanations for this fact have emphasized tensions among various possible objectives of central banks in closed-economy or small-open-economy frameworks. In contrast, this paper explores structural and policy interdependence among economies as an explanation for price-level non-trend-stationarities. It demonstrates that such interdependence can induce central banks to follow non-trend-stationary policies even if they desire only to smooth prices in their home economies.

Are City Managers Greedy Bureaucrats?, John R. Bartle, Ronnie Lacourse Korosec Apr 1995

Are City Managers Greedy Bureaucrats?, John R. Bartle, Ronnie Lacourse Korosec

Public Administration Faculty Publications

William A. Niskanen's (1971, 1975) theory of bureaucracy has been a source of much debate and research.^ The theory assumes that utility-maximizing bureaucrats will seek to maximize their agency's discretionary budget. A central implication of this theory is that bureaus will supply output inefficiently or in quantities greater than that desired by citizens.

The authors test Niskanen's hypothesis by examining the decision of cities to contract out for services. Their premise is that city managers fit the characteristics of the greedy bureaucrat Niskanen describes. If his theory is valid, then city managers should be expected to avoid contracting out because …
