Sabbaticals

The sabbatical will be built around analysis and study of the speeches and great speakers of the mid-1800's in the United States, among them Lincoln, Davis, Lee, Grant, and Frederick Douglas. Theirs was an era of great speeches and volatile public opinion. I believe their words and presentations were as much responsible for the definition of America as those of Washington or Jefferson. Even the average soldier displayed language skills of surprising quality. These speeches, poems and correspondences effectively "sold" the American Civil War to the nation. They inspire my curiosity as to how and why they were so effective …

The Anchor: 1995

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

What do we want Nebraska's communities, educational institutions, and programs of study to look like in the year 2020? What is the ideal vision of food systems and food systems education in Nebraska for the twenty-first century? In 1994, with the support of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and with leadership from the University of Nebraska, we initiated a process in Nebraska to discover our individual and collective dreams and aspirations for the future.
