Analyzing Correlations Of Three Types In Selected Lines Of Drosophila Melanogaster That Have Evolved Stable Extreme Geotactic Performance, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Jerry Hirsch, Stewart H. Berlocher

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The behavior-genetic analysis of Drosophila melanogaster with geotactic performance as the phenotype is an ideal model system with which to investigate the complex relations between heredity and behavior. As part of a long-term, 38-year study, we report 4 experiments that identify and analyze trait correlations in the selected high- and low-geotaxis lines. We performed F2 correlational analyses and backcrosses to examine 3 types of correlations: (a) genotype-genotype (alcohol dehydrogenase [Adh]-amylase [Amy]), (b) genotype-phenotype (Adh and Amy-geotaxis), and (c) phenotype-phenotype (mate preference–geotaxis). Only the Adh-geotaxis correlation survived meiosis and reappeared in the F …

Indicating Acts During Counting By A Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes), Sarah T. Boysen, Gary G. Berntson, Traci A. Shreyer, Michelle B. Hannan Mar 1995

Indicating Acts During Counting By A Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes), Sarah T. Boysen, Gary G. Berntson, Traci A. Shreyer, Michelle B. Hannan

Sentience Collection

A chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) experienced in counting arrays of 0-7 items and trained for comprehension of number symbols, spontaneously displayed a variety of indicating acts (e.g., pointing, touching, and rearranging items) during counting. Twenty-five sessions were videotaped, and all trials were evaluated for the relations among number of items presented, number of indicating acts displayed, and the Arabic number selected to represent the array. Significant correlations included the relations between number of items and the cardinal number selected by the animal, between the number of items and indicating acts displayed by the chimpanzee, and between the number of indicating acts …

Exploring The Impact Of Funding Source On The Provision Of Family Preservation Services, Debora L. Heider

Theses and Graduate Projects

In an effort to contain costs and increase accessibility to health care coverage, Minnesota has begun to transfer medical assistance recipients into Health Maintenance Organizations. This research project explores this change in funding and its impact on the provision of family preservation services. This project focuses on the characteristics of family preservation programs, their effectiveness at teaching families the skills needed to stay together, and the limited mental health care coverage provided under group health plans and its impact on service utilization. Twenty-three family therapists and mental health practitioners, along with three program administrators representing three family preservation programs in …

Ethnic Identity, Intergroup Relations And Welfare Policy In The Canadian Context: A Comparative Discourse Analysis, Adrienne S. Chambon, Donald F. Bellamy Mar 1995

Ethnic Identity, Intergroup Relations And Welfare Policy In The Canadian Context: A Comparative Discourse Analysis, Adrienne S. Chambon, Donald F. Bellamy

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper illuminates the negotiation of group identities and intergroup relations in the Canadian context. It presents an empirical, comparative analysis of group claims around social assistance policy using discourse analysis. Lexical, semantic and narrative analyses of Aboriginal and multicultural documents show a complex organization of intergroup relations, with distinct and at times conflicting claims. In view of the tensions, responsive policy development requires that historical specificity, complexity, and even incompatibilities be taken into account.

Ethnic And Minority Groups In Israel: Challenges For Social Work Theory, Value And Practice, Eliezer D. Jaffe Mar 1995

Ethnic And Minority Groups In Israel: Challenges For Social Work Theory, Value And Practice, Eliezer D. Jaffe

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Israel is a Western, democratic, pluralistic enclave in the Middle East. Multiple ethnic groups, mass immigration, religious diversity, and the current ethnic dilemmas experienced there provide ample opportunity for study. The social work role in addressing the ethnic and cultural challenges in Israel is discussed without minimizing or reducing the complexity of the issues. A closer examination of social work as a vehicle for ethnic sensitivity and understanding of ethnic diversity is required. Knowing how to work with diverse populations and ethnic conflict is imperative in Israel and elsewhere.
