A Practical Model For Teaching Supervision Through Vertically Integrated Teams, Rodger K. Bufford, Clark D. Campbell, Brandy Liebscher
A Practical Model For Teaching Supervision Through Vertically Integrated Teams, Rodger K. Bufford, Clark D. Campbell, Brandy Liebscher
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Teaching supervision is a relatively new practice and training area (Schindler and Talen, 1996). This paper describes a method of teaching clinical supervision to graduate students in clinical psychology. The method involves an intensive seminar, assigned readings, and a year long supervised practicum in providing supervision. Students in the first through fourth years of a doctoral program are assigned to a team with a faculty leader. The faculty member oversees the professional development of all students on the team. Additionally, the fourth year students oversee the first and second year students under the supervision of the faculty member. This method …

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong
Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper illustrates how popular music written, produced, and performed by Singaporeans provides a means through which the culture and society of Singapore may be understood. Music with English language text conveys a sense of place and reflects a distinctively Singaporean spirit and identity. The paper examines four themes: the portrayal of Singapore's multiracial population which reflects a unique cultural synthesis; the Singaporeans' concept of urbanity, manifested as the simultaneous attraction and repulsion towards the city and the desire for nature and the rustic; the distinctive social engineering in Singapore; and the way in which global issues are imported into …
Temporary Equililibrium Dynamics With Learning: The Stability Of Random Walk Beliefs, Shurojit Chatterji
Temporary Equililibrium Dynamics With Learning: The Stability Of Random Walk Beliefs, Shurojit Chatterji
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper examines the stability of deterministic steady-states with a one dimensional state-variable and a smooth, recursive updating rule. It is shown that the only possibly stable steady states are those associated with random walk beliefs, provided there is motion on a center manifold, which is the case when a key parameter is non-zero; In the extant literature, there is no motion on the center manifold (the parameter is zero), a consequence of the specific assumption that the expected value of the state variable next period determines its current value. The stability properties are seen to be robust with respect …
Analysis Of Tax Capacity And Tax Effort Of Texas Counties, 1980-1993 (Report Ced96-8), Rod Hissong
Analysis Of Tax Capacity And Tax Effort Of Texas Counties, 1980-1993 (Report Ced96-8), Rod Hissong
Center for Economic Development Research and Service Publications
Texas counties vary dramatically across socio-economic factors. They range in population from 127 in Loving County to 2.9 million in Harris County. Population densities range from less than one person per square mile to 2,175 people per square mile. Some economies are nearly exclusively agrarian, others are heavily dependent upon oil and gas and yet others closely reflect the national economy. These, and other variations, create difficulties when comparing the public fiscal health of the counties; ie a county's ability to generate revenues for public goods and services. This study focuses on the Tax Capacity Index and Tax Effort Index …

The Effects Of Blocking On Selective Attention In Visual Search, Kristen Lewandowski '96
The Effects Of Blocking On Selective Attention In Visual Search, Kristen Lewandowski '96
Honors Projects
In studies of attention in visual search, older adults consistently perform more poorly than young adults. In most visual attention computer tasks, simple, conjunction, and unconfounded trials are presented randomly. This study explores the possibility that older adults are slower than young adults at changing their search strategies to match each type of trial. If this is the case, blocking the trials together so that the subject sees a series of each type of trial should allow the older adults to perfect their search strategies, giving them reaction times similar to those of young adults. In this experiment, 14 young …
The Effects Of Visual Field Size On Search Performance, Heather A. Lang '96
The Effects Of Visual Field Size On Search Performance, Heather A. Lang '96
Honors Projects
In the fields of both cognitive development and cognitive aging, similar patterns of performance on selective attention tasks have been found between children and older adults. Presently, there exist few studies of selective attention across the lifespan. A 1995 study by Shapiro, Shapiro, Cointin, and Forbes addressed this absence through investigating search performance in a cross-sectional, life-span study. In the Shapiro et al. study, a compelling pattern of performance was found: in conjunction conditions, which require serial searches, older adults' performance differed significantly from the younger adults' performance across increasing display size only in target absent trials. The present study …
A House Divided: Party Polarization On Welfare Issues, Amy Stewart '96
A House Divided: Party Polarization On Welfare Issues, Amy Stewart '96
Honors Projects
Because the U.S. House of Representatives is supposedly most responsive to popular opinion, the research here investigates possible determinants of this trend as manifested by our Representatives in the House. This research postulates that not only divided government and the decline of the conservative coalition, but also the Contract with America contribute to the causation of party unity, and ultimately to the causation of party polarization on welfare issues. Consequently, this research reveals that the conservative coalition did not decline, that the unity of both parties did increase after the Contract With America, and that the Democrats remain consistently more …
Teen Mothers And Their Educational Attainment: Some Evidence From The National Longitudinal Survey Of Youth, Michael Seeborg, Risa Kumazawa
Teen Mothers And Their Educational Attainment: Some Evidence From The National Longitudinal Survey Of Youth, Michael Seeborg, Risa Kumazawa
Scholarly Publications
This study uses the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to estimate the effects of teenage motherhood on the educational attainment of young women. The results of an OLS regression with interaction terms demonstrate that the effects of teenage motherhood on education depends on the socio-economic background of the mother. Estimations show that young women from economically advantaged backgrounds sacrifice more than one year of education as a result of teenage motherhood while those from disadvantaged backgrounds sacrifice little, if any, education. Statistically significant interactions are found between teenage motherhood and several background characteristics. (J13, J24)

Of Heart And Mind: Social Policy Essays In Honor Of Sar A. Levitan, Garth L. Mangum Editor, Stephen L. Mangum Editor
Upjohn Press
The essays in this volume, authored by close friends, associates and students of Sar Levitan, pay tribute to the enduring mark he left on the field of social policy. The book is loosely organized around the method of analysis taught and practiced by Levitan: identifying problems through the examination of facts, developing a thorough understanding of institutions, assessing institutional policies, and evaluating policy options.
Occupational Possible Selves: Patterns Among Male And Female Undergraduates, Lori D. Lindley, Linda M. Chalk, Aimee Ellenich
Occupational Possible Selves: Patterns Among Male And Female Undergraduates, Lori D. Lindley, Linda M. Chalk, Aimee Ellenich
Modern Psychological Studies
This study uses the possible selves theory (Markus & Nurius, 1986) to examine the differences between 27 undergraduate men and 27 undergraduate women in their perceptions of their future occupational possibilities. Participants rated a list of feminine, masculine, and neutral jobs on how much they feared, expected, and idealized each one. Analysis was done using a within-subjects repeated measures MANOVA test and backward elimination regression analysis. Both men and women were found to fear feminine jobs more than they expected or idealized these jobs (all ps < .001). Women were found to fear masculine jobs more than they expected (p < .001) but not more than they idealized these jobs (p < .060). Occupational self-efficacy and support of the women's movement were also analyzed for their possible influence on fear of masculine jobs, using the Attitudes Toward Feminism and the Women's Movement Scale and the Task-Specific Scale of Occupational Self-Efficacy, but no significant predictors were found.
Age-Related Dendritic Changes In Human Occipital And Prefrontal Cortices: A Quantitative Golgi Study, Kelly A. Courns, Bob Jacobs
Age-Related Dendritic Changes In Human Occipital And Prefrontal Cortices: A Quantitative Golgi Study, Kelly A. Courns, Bob Jacobs
Modern Psychological Studies
Qualitative (Scheibe!, 1992) and quantitative (Jacobs & Scheibel, 1993) research indicates a general decline in dendritic neuropil with increasing age. The present study extends previous human dendritic research by examining quantitatively age-related changes in 2 cortical areas: prefrontal cortex (area 10) and occipital cortex (area 18). Tissue blocks were obtained from the left hemisphere of 10 neurologically normal subjects, ranging in age from 23 to 81 years. Blocks were stained with a modified rapid Golgi technique. Supragranular pyramidal cells were quantified on a Neurolucida computer/microscope interface system (Microbrightfield, Inc.). Dendritic system complexity was determined by several dependent measures: total dendritic …
Symbolic Interaction And An Interpretive Approach To Cross Cultural Psychiatry, Henry Dyson
Symbolic Interaction And An Interpretive Approach To Cross Cultural Psychiatry, Henry Dyson
Modern Psychological Studies
Adoption of the medical model of psychopathology has de-emphasized the need for psychiatry to incorporate new developments from the other social sciences. The need for an interpretive (rather than merely biological) approach to psychopathology based upon theories of symbolic interaction is argued in the present article with respect to the emerging field of cross-cultural psychiatry. Groundwork for such an approach is sketched out by application of Obeyesekere's (1981) anthropological theory of personal symbols.
Religious Expression In The Public Square – The Building Blocks For An Intermediate Position, Kent Greenawalt
Religious Expression In The Public Square – The Building Blocks For An Intermediate Position, Kent Greenawalt
Faculty Scholarship
The problem of religious expression in the public square is not primarily legal in a narrow sense. We are not talking about whether people are allowed to voice certain kinds of opinions or to vote on certain kinds of grounds. The problem is about how citizens and officials in liberal democracies should act. My own position on this problem is an intermediate one, in a sense I shall shortly explain. Its plausibility depends on some sense of the strengths and weaknesses of positions at each end of the spectrum. I shall begin with a thumbnail sketch of these.
Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies
Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies
Faculty Scholarship
In this paper, we discuss and debunk the four most common critiques of the rational choice research program (which we prefer to call Positive Political Theory) by explaining and advocating its foundations: the rationality assumption, component analysis (abstraction), strategic behavior, and theory building, in turn. We argue that the rationality assumption and component analysis, properly understood, can be seen to underlie all social science, despite the protestations of critics. We then discuss the two ways that PPT most clearly contributes to political science (i.e., what distinguishes it from other research programs), namely the introduction of strategic behavior (people do not …
Preventive Detention And The Judicial Prediction Of Dangerousness For Juveniles: A Natural Experiment, Jeffery Fagan, Martin Guggenheim
Preventive Detention And The Judicial Prediction Of Dangerousness For Juveniles: A Natural Experiment, Jeffery Fagan, Martin Guggenheim
Faculty Scholarship
Since 1970, legislatures have increasingly relied on preventive detention – detention before trial ordered solely to prevent an accused from committing crime during the pretrial period – as an instrument of social control. Prior to this period, detention before trial was usually ordered only to assure an accused's presence at trial or to ensure the integrity of the trial process by preventing an accused from tampering with witnesses. Today, the majority of states and the federal system have changed their laws to allow judges to detain arrestees who pose a risk to society if released during the pretrial period. Half …

Family Rituals And Adolescence: A Study Of The Relationship Between And Adolescent's Race, Gender, Parental Marital Status, And The Amount Of Ritual In His/Her Family, Kim Hunziker
Theses
This study explores the relationship between an adolescent's gender, race, parental marital status, and the self-reported level of ritual in his or her family. Participants included 37 White, and African American youth from age 13 to 18, who were active in either a suburban church youth group or an urban community center. Each participant completed a demographic profile and the Family Routine Questionnaire. AT-Test and a chi-square were performed to compare a number of the independent variables (gender, race, and parental marital status) to the dependent questionnaire scores. The results of the T-Test indicate a statistically significant difference in the …

The author addresses some basic structural questions that the clinic's supervisor or supervisors might think about when beginning to design or renovate a program. These include the goals of the proposed clinic; the number and qualifications of its teaching and support staff; the desired relationships among staff members; the subject matter of the clinic's cases; the duration of the clinic, the amount of course credit that students should receive for taking it, and the caseload per student; the grading system; the relationships between the students and the tribunals or other fora in which they will be practicing; how the clinic …

I wish to study the teaching of participatory democracy in entry level political science courses - Introduction to Political Science and American National Government. I believe that many Americans are distrustful of their elected leaders and cynical toward their governmental institutions. Signs of this malaise are declining voter turnouts, the success of negative campaigning ads, and the low level of discourse on talk radio shows. These conditions, if lasting, undermine democratic government's reliance on citizen participation.
Faculty who teach political science in the most democratic of higher learning institutions, the community colleges, should, I feel, analyze these factors to determine …
