Urban Squatting: An Adaptive Response To The Housing Crisis, Rimma Ashkinadze

From introduction: Urban squatting is the unauthorized occupation of empty buildings. Squatting is usually thought to be a Third World phenomenon associated with urbanization, poverty, and rural-urban migration. However, there is a history of squatting in the US and Europe as well. Squatting has been reported in New York, San Francisco, Newark, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Los Angeles. Since World War II and particularly in the last thirty years, urban squatting has received much attention in Europe. The major European centers for squatting have been London, Amsterdam, and Berlin.' In Britain, the squatting of buildings scheduled for renovation or demolition …

Feminist Social Research: Epistemological And Methodological Implications, Molly Moloney Jan 1996

Feminist Social Research: Epistemological And Methodological Implications, Molly Moloney

Honors Papers

In this paper I examine some of the primary debates in feminist epistemology, with a particular emphasis on postmodern epistemological positions, asking what these mean for doing research. One central question I ask is 'what role should the concept of objectivity have in feminist sociological research?' I argue for a reformulation of the concept of objectivity that, sympathetic with feminist postmodernism, rejects the ideal of value-neutrality in research, but that also rejects relativism and subjectivism. Keeping these debates in mind, I will examine debates regarding feminist methodology and the question of whether or not there is a specific feminist method …

Fears In Children With Chronic Constipation: Reliability And Validity Of The Defecation Anxiety Scale, Elizabeth Page Clawson Jan 1996

Fears In Children With Chronic Constipation: Reliability And Validity Of The Defecation Anxiety Scale, Elizabeth Page Clawson

Theses and Dissertations

Pediatric constipation can lead to various negative emotional and physical consequences including abdominal pain, painful defecation, toileting fears, anxiety about pain and intestinal dysfunction. In addition, constipation can lead to socially compromising and embarrassing situations due to associated overflow incontinence. These unpleasant physical and emotional symptoms may in tum lead to conditioned avoidance behaviors, which serve to further maintain the cycle of stool retention and constipation. Presently, there have not been any studies directly addressing the role of conditioned aversion in the etiology and maintenance of constipation. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Defecation Anxiety Scale (DAS)- a …

香港流行文化與流行歌詞縱橫談, Minghui Liao Jan 1996

香港流行文化與流行歌詞縱橫談, Minghui Liao

Dissertations from all years

Expressive Individualism In A Midwestern Situated Youth Subculture Group, Jeffrey Michael Webb Jan 1996

Expressive Individualism In A Midwestern Situated Youth Subculture Group, Jeffrey Michael Webb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In a Midwestern city of, according to the 1990 census, 34,000 people (97% "white"), fifty all Caucasian, mostly middle class, predominantly high school, youth subculture group members (32 males; 18 females) were qualitatively studied in public places. I utilized participant observation, intensive interviews, field notes, color photographs, diary entrees, and electronic mail to gather data on why these particular young people appeared and behaved in manners different from their peers and the larger culture. Such difference centered on hair color, nonmainstream body piercing, tattoos, baggy clothing, pranking behavior known as "garfinkeling," and some psychedelic drug use. The design of the …

Claiming Private Law For The Left: Exploring Gilmer's Impact And Legacy, Roberto L. Corrada Jan 1996

Claiming Private Law For The Left: Exploring Gilmer's Impact And Legacy, Roberto L. Corrada

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The left should not be so quick to condemn private arbitration of statutory rights for two primary reasons. First, although these processes have historically been seized by employers as an efficient, less costly alternative to litigation devoid of due process safeguards, there is nothing inherent in private arbitration to prevent making the process fairer for employees. Second, there is a substantial payoff that justifies the work required by those on the left to transform these processes for the betterment of employees. That payoff is greater access to justice. Private arbitration holds the potential to eliminate institutional barriers that block access …

Administrator Beware: External Supervision Issues Regarding Human-Subjects Based Research, Craig Newburger

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses external supervision issues regarding human-subjects based research in education in the U.S. Ongoing changes in federal, state, and campus regulatory environments regarding human subjects based research compel speech communication administrators to take a more active role in ensuring that area faculty and graduate students are aware of current regulations and guidelines governing their related research activities. Speech communication matters and doctoral students involved with human subjects-based research normally are focused on sorting out basic experimental design and data collection. Awareness of emerging regulatory issues concerning how their human subjects-based research is conducted may not be adequately addressed …

Communication Networks And Perceptions Of Social Support As Antecedents To College Adjustment: A Comparison Between Student Commuters And Campus Residents, Lilnabeth P. Somera, Beth Hartman Ellis

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article looks at the impact of social support on college adjustment among traditional campus residents and commuters. One consistent controversy concerning the conceptualization of social support concerns what actions, resources, and outcomes should be considered relevant to the provision of social support. As comparisons are made between commuters and campus residents, it appears that the impact of social support on college adjustment in these populations may vary in terms of which type of social support is relevant to various aspects of adjustment. In the context of commuting students, the availability of informational and instrumental network support and the perception …

"Classical 'Tenure Trek': In The Search For New Academic Frontiers, 'Don't Lower The Bridge, Raise The Water'", Gerald Lee Ratliff

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article evaluates the conditions related to a similar classical quest for academic tenure and examines the primary strategies that may be involved in enriching the traditional educational relics of teaching, research, scholarship and service. Any basic, honest blueprint for tenure clearly demands a visionary pre-hiring faculty selection committee that understands the significant investment indicated by an advertisement for a tenure track appointment. After a basic tenure-trek blueprint has been drawn, perhaps the vision of academic and professional expectations may be more clearly detailed by some illustrations that suggest effective strategies for achieving tenure goals and objectives.

Disability, Work And Cash Benefits, Jerry L. Mashaw Editor, Virginia P. Reno Editor, Richard V. Burkhauser Editor, Monroe Berkowitz Editor

Upjohn Press

This book examines the economic consequences of work disabilities, and public and private interventions that might enable disabled individuals to enter the work force for the first time, remain at work, or return to work. Three groups of papers are presented. The first group examines ways that labor market changes, policy interventions and individual choices shape the work force. The next analyzes both public and private return to work policies for the work disabled and for those with a severely disabling condition. The final group focuses on the specific needs of the disabled that affect their work force participation, including …
