A Thread Of Evidence: Shaker Textiles At South Union, Kentucky, Jonathan Jeffrey, Donna C. Parker Jan 1996

A Thread Of Evidence: Shaker Textiles At South Union, Kentucky, Jonathan Jeffrey, Donna C. Parker

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Textile production was one of the many routine tasks performed in the early American home. Those who joined communal groups, like the Shaker converts at South Union, Kentucky, brought to the colony knowledge of these activities. Shakers manufactured fabric – linen, silk, and woolens – in about the same manner as most of their contemporaries, only on a larger scale. Though few of their contemporaries left documentation regarding the tedious tasks involved in textile production, the South Union Shaker community, located in Logan County, kept intimate accounts of daily activities through journals, diaries, day books, and correspondence which included records …

Trees Of History In Systematics And Philology, Robert O’Hara Dec 1995

Trees Of History In Systematics And Philology, Robert O’Hara

Robert J. O’Hara

«The Natural System» is the name given to the underlying arrangement present in the diversity of life. Unlike a classification, which is made up of classes and members, a system or arrangement is an integrated whole made up of connected parts. In the pre-evolutionary period a variety of forms were proposed for the Natural System, including maps, circles, stars, and abstract multidimensional objects. The trees sketched by Darwin in the 1830s should probably be considered the first genuine evolutionary diagrams of the Natural System—the first genuine evolutionary trees. Darwin refined his image of the Natural System in the well-known evolutionary …

Testing The Monopsony-Inefficiency Incentive For Backward Integration, Azzeddine Azzam Dec 1995

Testing The Monopsony-Inefficiency Incentive For Backward Integration, Azzeddine Azzam

Azzeddine Azzam

In theory, monopsony at one stage in a vertically related market provides an incentive for backward integration into the adjacent competitive stages. By integrating backward, a monopsonist internalizes the monopsony inefficiency due to underemployment of the factor produced upstream. However, little is known about the importance of such incentive in practice. In this paper, the author provides an empirically implementable model to test the monopsony-inefficiency incentive for vertical integration. For illustration, the model is applied to the U.S. beef slaughter industry. Findings seem to support the monopsony-inefficiency incentive for backward integration by the industry into the live cattle market.

Effect Of Verbal Self-Disclosure On Natural Killer Cell Activity: Moderating Influence Of Cynical Hostility, Alan Christensen, D. Edwards, J. Wiebe, E. Benotsch, L Mckelvey, M. Andrews, D. Lubaroff Dec 1995

Effect Of Verbal Self-Disclosure On Natural Killer Cell Activity: Moderating Influence Of Cynical Hostility, Alan Christensen, D. Edwards, J. Wiebe, E. Benotsch, L Mckelvey, M. Andrews, D. Lubaroff

Alan J. Christensen

One objective of the present research was to examine the immunological effects of self-disclosing personal information regarding a traumatic or stressful experience. A second objective was to examine the hypothesis that the effect of self-disclosure on immune function is moderated by individual differences in cynical hostility. Forty-three male college undergraduates, classified as high or low on the Cook-Medley Hostility scale were randomly assigned to either a verbal self-disclosure or a nondisclosure discussion condition. Task-induced change in natural killer (NK) cell activity (i.e., cytotoxicity) served as the dependent variable. As predicted, a significant interaction between discussion condition and hostility was obtained. …
