The most frequently occurring and stressful events reported by light rail operators included: hitting and killing, hitting, or nearly hitting pedestrians and vehicles while operating the train. …

The Factor Structure Of Tests Of Attention, Memory, And General Intellectual Function In Mild-To-Moderate Brain-Injured Patients, William D. Ruwe Feb 2000

The Factor Structure Of Tests Of Attention, Memory, And General Intellectual Function In Mild-To-Moderate Brain-Injured Patients, William D. Ruwe

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Mild-to-moderate brain-injured patients often report a variety of persisting neurocognitive deficits, including both verbal and visual/visuospatial memory dysfunction. To enhance the theoretical understanding of cognitive/intellectual and memory functions and appropriately apply such knowledge clinically, it is important to elucidate more fully the nature of these deficits. Historically, investigations of the construct validity of intellectual and memory tests have been characterized by inconsistency and controversy. Previous factor-analytic studies, especially those in which the subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scales have been evaluated, have provided discrepant results with regard to the identification of the critical factors underlying various neurocognitivc abilities. Such analyses …

Intergovernmental Relations In Employment Policy: The United States Experience, Christopher J. O'Leary, Robert A. Straits Feb 2000

Intergovernmental Relations In Employment Policy: The United States Experience, Christopher J. O'Leary, Robert A. Straits

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Policies to regulate and support labor markets in the United States have mainly been an initiative of the federal government. Historically, states and localities were reluctant to act independently to build up worker rights and protections for fear of competitively disadvantaging resident industries with added costs. Federal constitutional authority to raise revenue and control commerce among the states governed development of labor market policy in the United States. Labor market support initiatives usually have been forged in difficult economic times with contributions and compromise from the full political spectrum. This paper examines the development of employment policy in the twentieth …

Designing A Complaint And Grievance System And Other Member Assistance Services Under Medicaid Managed Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Joel B. Teitelbaum

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

Medicaid beneficiaries enrolled in managed care arrangements have two basic sets of procedural protections when benefits are denied. The first set consists of the right to timely and adequate notice of "any action affecting [a] claim" for medical assistance, as well as a fair hearing in the case of any individual "whose claim for medical assistance under the plan is denied or is not acted upon with reasonable promptness." The second is the right to "internal grievance" procedures to "challenge the denial of coverage *** or payment [of medical] assistance." The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) is expected to delineate …

Stocking Rate Guidelines For Rural Small Holdings, Swan Coastal Plain And Darling Scarp And Surrounds, Western Australia, Dennis Van Gool, Ken Angell, Lindsay Stephens

Agriculture reports

Small rural holdings are often owned by people who want to pursue a semi-rural lifestyle but who are inexperienced in land management issues. This can result in landholders stocking their properties with animals at rates higher than the land resources can sustain, leading to degradation problems such as soil erosion, water pollution and damage to vegetation. This document provides information and guidelines to help planners, developers, local authorities and land owners determine the base stocking rates for rural small holdings on the Swan Coastal Plain and Darling Scarp and immediate surrounds. The advice utilises Agriculture Western Australia’s rural stocking rate …

Responding To An Emergency: An Interview With Bob Macpherson, Care, Margaret S. Busé

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

In an interview with The Journal, Bob MacPherson spoke candidly and honestly about the challenges, successes and lessons learned in effectively responding to an emergency situation. MacPherson is responsible for landmine safety and awareness and is the emergency ream leader for CARE. Throughout 1999, he has been in Kosovo coordinating activities so that civilian lives can return to a stare of normalcy. Upon finishing our conversation, he was scheduled to fly to Chechnya to try to coordinate relief efforts for that war-ravaged country.

Chechnya: The Republic Of The Wolf, Margaret S. Busé

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

In a state of humanitarian crisis, Chechnya, the poorest of states within the Russian Federation, continues to strive for independence. The prewar arsenal of landmines consisted primarily of PMN and OMZ mines. Stocks of PM's were moved to secret bases in the mountain regions during the war. There is also a considerable black market for landmines.

A Diary Of Destruction In Bosnia, Oren J. Schlein Feb 2000

A Diary Of Destruction In Bosnia, Oren J. Schlein

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

During the Bosnian war in the early 1990s, Croat, Muslim and Serb forces deployed between 600,000 and one million anti-personnel landmines. This can seem a meaningless figure until you see the effects of both exploded and unexploded landmines. Driving into town from the Sarajevo airport, I witnessed the striking contrast between the beauty of the hills surrounding the city and the pockmarked buildings damaged by relentless shelling during the Bosnian war. The old town has been largely restored to its historical charm, while the rest of the city and outlying areas continue to exhibit the awful blemishes of war. I …

Bosnia And Herzegovina, Country Profile Feb 2000

Bosnia And Herzegovina, Country Profile

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

After Marshal Tito's death in 1980 and the collapse of the former Soviet Union, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) divided into five different countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) and the Republic of Macedonia. After having declared its independence from SFRY in March 1992, BiH fought in a war that lasted over three-and-a-half years. This war destroyed families, communities and infrastructure and left the country littered with landmines and unexploded ordnance. After the Dayton agreement was signed on Dec. 14, 1995, the war officially ended and the country was …

Developing New Technology For Humanitarian Demining, Russell Gasser, Terry Thomas

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Despite the spending of hundreds of millions of dollars on high-tech research over the last few years, local humanitarian deminers still use traditional prodders and metal detectors. The biggest recent technical innovation has been mechanical vegetation clearance which was mostly developed in the field and bypassed the research route.

Sources Of Work-Family Conflict: A Sino-U.S. Comparison Of The Effects Of Work And Family Demands, Nini Yang, Chao C. Chen, Jaepil Choi, Yimin Zou Feb 2000

Sources Of Work-Family Conflict: A Sino-U.S. Comparison Of The Effects Of Work And Family Demands, Nini Yang, Chao C. Chen, Jaepil Choi, Yimin Zou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Given differences in values about work and family time, it is hypothesized that Americans will experience greater family demand, which will have greater impact on work-family conflict, whereas the Chinese will experience greater work demand, which will have the greater impact on work-family conflict. The results of a survey of working men and women in the 2 countries generally support the hypotheses; however, work demand did not differ significantly between the 2 countries and did not have a greater effect than family demand on work-family conflict in China.

Predictors Of Task And Contextual Performance: Frame-Of-Reference Effects And Applicant Reaction Effects On Selection System Validity, John Hunthausen Feb 2000

Predictors Of Task And Contextual Performance: Frame-Of-Reference Effects And Applicant Reaction Effects On Selection System Validity, John Hunthausen

Dissertations and Theses

An employment process suprasystem contains human resource-related systems such as training, recruitment, performance appraisal, and personnel selection. Similarly, a personnel selection system consists of interdependent subsystems that work together to manifest its properties (e.g., the acquisition of qualified and high-potential individuals). Finally, each of these complex subsystems (e.g., applicant reactions to selection methods) have interdependent elements (e.g., procedural and distributive justice) that work together to manifest the properties of the subsystem (e.g., applicant fairness perceptions).

This dissertation takes such a systems approach to understanding the complexities of a personnel selection system to explore the interactions among three of its subsystems: …

Releasing The Fetters: Parties And The Mobilization Of The African-American Electorate, Peter Wielhouwer Jan 2000

Releasing The Fetters: Parties And The Mobilization Of The African-American Electorate, Peter Wielhouwer

Peter W. Wielhouwer

One of the most important functions of political parties is mobilizing the electorate during campaigns in order to help the party and its candidates win elections. To this end, the parties seek out particular types of potential voters, and this research assesses the efforts of the parties to mobilize African-Americans. Using the 1952–96 American National Election Studies and the 1996 National Black Election Study, I examine long-term patterns of party canvassing, bivariate effects of the party canvass on voting rates, and effects of the parties' activities on black voters in 1996. The findings show that the overall contacting rate of …

Farmers' Perspectives Of Michigan State University Extension: Trends And Lessons From 1996 And 1999, Michelle Campo, Murari Suvedi, Maria Lapinski Jan 2000

Farmers' Perspectives Of Michigan State University Extension: Trends And Lessons From 1996 And 1999, Michelle Campo, Murari Suvedi, Maria Lapinski

Michelle L. Campo

In 1994, Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) reorganized into Area of Expertise teams (AOE) linking county agents and specialists around specific commodity groups' needs. A statewide survey was conducted in 1996 and 1999 to determine agricultural producers' educational needs and perceptions of MSUE. Participation rates among full-time farmers in MSUE programs are high. The number of part-time farmers is increasing, and these farmers are participating less in MSUE programs. Farmers want one-on-one interaction with Extension agents. Marketing, business management and farm economics were named as important educational needs by significantly more farmers in 1999 than in 1996.

The Clothes Have No Emperor: Bourdieu On American Imperialism, Charles Lemert Jan 2000

The Clothes Have No Emperor: Bourdieu On American Imperialism, Charles Lemert

Charles C Lemert

`The Clothes Have No Emperor' (a title borrowed from Paul Slansky's hilarious critique of the Reagan years in the USA) means to say that Bourdieu's criticism of American imperialism is an understandable slip of his brilliant visual sociology. He writes to those of a disposition to agree completely because they know the facts all the better. Bourdieu may well be the only person alive today who has so perfectly combined theoretical, empirical and political work. Why then has he allowed this critique to be published for all the world to see? Not, I think, because he is wrong, but because …
