Leadership In The Future: Preparation For Future Generations Of Leaders, Sherry A. Myers
Leadership In The Future: Preparation For Future Generations Of Leaders, Sherry A. Myers
Theses and Graduate Projects
What does the future of leadership hold? As books, lectures, seminars, and college courses are created, guiding the public through ideas on how to develop leadership skills, we remain concerned about what the leaders of tomorrow will need to know. Will the leadership skills of today apply to the workplace of tomorrow? Will our world politicians be those with the most education or the one with charisma? How do you lead numerous people spread throughout the world?
Beginning with a discussion of two leadership theories existing today that will be viable in the future, we will look at how this …
Adolescents And Young Adults In Transition: From Homelessness To Permanent Housing, Tona L. Willand
Adolescents And Young Adults In Transition: From Homelessness To Permanent Housing, Tona L. Willand
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study explores the intrapersonal and environmental factors associated with change in the transition from homelessness to permanent housing from the perspective of young women who have experienced it. Three young women were interviewed face-to-face in semi-structured interviews, using a non-probability convenience sample. Content analysis was used to identify intrapersonal and environmental factors that affected the process of change. Research participants identified goal-directed behavior, persistence and hope as intrapersonal factors in effecting change. Supportive relationships and practical assistance were identified as supportive factors in the transition period. The findings are discussed in relation to research from the literature, and the …

The Status Of Animals In Biblical And Christian Thought: A Study In Colliding Values, Rod Preece, David Fraser
The Status Of Animals In Biblical And Christian Thought: A Study In Colliding Values, Rod Preece, David Fraser
Morality and Religious Philosophy Collection
A common contemporary view is that the Bible and subsequent Christian thought authorize humans to exploit animals purely as means to human ends. This paper argues that Biblical and Christian thought have given rise to a more complex ethic of animal use informed by its pastoralist origins, Biblical pronouncements that permit different interpretations, and competing ideas and doctrines that arose during its development, and influenced by the rich and often contradictory features of ancient Hebrew and Greco-Roman traditions. The result is not a uniform ethic but a tradition of unresolved debate. Differing interpretations of the Great Chain of Being and …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Quality/Calidad/Qualité, a publication of the Population Council, highlights examples of clinical and educational programs which bring a strong commitment, as well as innovative and thoughtful approaches, to the issue of quality care in sexual and reproductive health. The series is based on the philosophy that women and their partners have a fundamental right to respectful treatment, information, choice, and follow-up from reproductive health care providers. This issue discusses improving women’s health and well being through a range of empowerment strategies in rural Peru.

Dc Birdscape: A Program For Monitoring Neotropical Migratory Birds In Washington, Dc, John Sauer, John Hadidian, Sam Droege, Paul Handly, Carolyn Williams, Christopher Swarth, George Didden, Jane Huff
Biogeography and Ecological Opportunity Collection
Urban and suburban habitats often contain a variety of Neotropical migratory birds, but are poorly sampled by programs such as the North American Breeding Bird Survey. DC Birdscape was developed to inventory and monitor birds in Washington, DC. Birds were surveyed using a systematic sample of point counts during 1993-1995. Results indicate that species richness of Neotropical migratory birds varied among land-use categories, and that maximum species richness occurred in parkland habitats. Although DC Birdscape has provided relevant information on bird distribution and species richness, it is unclear whether the information is of sufficient management interest to support its continuation …
Evaluation Of Animal Model Research, Kenneth J. Shapiro
Evaluation Of Animal Model Research, Kenneth J. Shapiro
Experimentation Collection
It is argued that a concept of evaluation of animal models that is broader and more useful than validation is available. Productive generativity refers to the degree to which a model furthers understanding and leads to more-effective treatment interventions. Results of the application of this novel evaluative frame to several animal models of eating disorders show that this animal-based research has not been productive. The question of the relation between clinic and animal laboratory is discussed.

Neural Network Learning Theory Integrates Behavior Therapy And Behavior Genetics, Warren W. Tryon
Neural Network Learning Theory Integrates Behavior Therapy And Behavior Genetics, Warren W. Tryon
Psychology Faculty Publications
This article makes several preliminary points prior to presenting two examples of how Neural Network Learning Theory (NNLT) integrates behavior therapy and behavior genetics. I will argue that NNLT is both a cognitive and behavioral theory; that neither cognitive nor behavior theory informs us about biological, including genetic, factors; and that NNLT provides and understanding of how biological, including genetic, factors influence psychology and behavior. I use the term integration to mean that NNLT provides a single vocabulary and set of explanatory concepts consistent with the broad spectrum of behavioral and cognitive therapies and informs us as to how genetics …

APIAS Research Report 研究報告
In response to the perceived housing needs of single elderly people, the "Housing for Senior Citizens" Scheme has been developed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority since the mid-1980s to provide shared housing for unrelated elderly people. Under this scheme, they live together in an apartment unit with individual bedrooms, but sharing certain facilities. This group is fairly numerous and, in Hong Kong in 1998, there were about 110,000 elderly people living alone for various reasons, among whom 34,000 were tenants in public housing estates. Despite some advantages, shared living for any age group can however lead to potential problems.

Oral History: Memories Transcribed, Mary M. Flekke
Oral History: Memories Transcribed, Mary M. Flekke
The Christian Librarian
Oral history began as oral tradition, the passing down of information from generation to generation. Now we commit most everything to "paper." However, there are still places in the world where the passing of history is truly an oral tradition. Within our own families, oral tradition is the main way most of us retain our favorite family stories. Unfortunately, by not recording these stories, they frequently undergo changes as they pass from parent to child, also, with the advent of technology and the decline of the extended family, these family stories are becoming lost.

Complexity And Copyright In Contradiction, Michael J. Madison
Complexity And Copyright In Contradiction, Michael J. Madison
Articles
The title of the article is a deliberate play on architect Robert Venturi's classic of post-modern architectural theory, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture. The article analyzes metaphorical 'architectures' of copyright and cyberspace using architectural and land use theories developed for the physical world. It applies this analysis to copyright law through the lens of the First Amendment. I argue that the 'simplicity' of digital engineering is undermining desirable 'complexity' in legal and physical structures that regulate expressive works.
Phylogenetic Inference And Neanderthal Mitochondrial Dna: Comparison Of Parsimony And Distance Models, Menahem Baguio Doura
Phylogenetic Inference And Neanderthal Mitochondrial Dna: Comparison Of Parsimony And Distance Models, Menahem Baguio Doura
Honors Papers
Recently, mtDNA was successfully extracted and sequenced from the Neanderthal type specimen (Krings et al, 1997, 1999). Researches attempted to determine the genetic relationship between the Neanderthal specimen and modem human populations using phylogenetic analysis and concluded that the variation existing between the Neanderthal specimen and the modem lineages falls outside the range of variation of modem human populations. Using molecular mutation rate assumptions, it has been concluded that the Neanderthal line diverged from the line leading to modem humans hundreds of thousands of years previous to earlier estimates. This suggests that Neanderthals went extinct without contributing genes to the …
Gendering Bodies In Preschool: The Importance Of The Interconnectedness Of Race, Class, And Gender, Abigail D. Paine
Gendering Bodies In Preschool: The Importance Of The Interconnectedness Of Race, Class, And Gender, Abigail D. Paine
Honors Papers
The methods through which children learn to identify with a gender and its ascribed roles in United States society have been documented thoroughly in both psychology and sociology. Although there are many researchers who agree that gender roles are limiting, stereotypical expressions of gender, they exist and continued to be learned by children, nevertheless. How are children's gender roles enforced? Why do children continue to grow up knowing what to attribute as "masculine" or "feminine"? One interesting way that stereotypical gender roles are enforced is through processes that gender children's bodies.

The Us School Breakfast Program: Short- And Long-Term Academic Effects, Chris Rohlfs
Honors Papers
This paper evaluates short- and long-term academic effects of the US School Breakfast Program (SBP). The paper divides into four sections: an introduction (page 4), a literature review (page 11), a statistical model (page 31), and an empirical model (page 38). In the first section, we cover general facts and details about the SBP. In the second section, we first review literature relevant to the SBP (supply, demand, and short-term effects studies). Next, we explore studies of the long-term effects of schooling and of school quality. Many of the techniques and information from these studies relate to our discussion of …

The Gendered World Of Disney: A Content Analysis Of Gender Themes In Full-Length Animated Disney Feature Films, Beth A. Wiersma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research has focused on the gender messages portrayed in television programs, cartoons, advertisements, literature, picture books, and fairy tales. One venue that has not received as much attention in the research is the Disney 1 full-length animated feature films. This is a qualitative study of the gender themes and portrayal of gender roles in full-length animated feature films by The Walt Disney Company. The findings in this research indicate there has been little change in the stereotyped portrayals of Disney characters from the release of the first full-length animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 to …
